Chapter 113: The Argument

last update 게시일: 2026-05-05 22:10:08

The barrier's glow was fading, its light dimming with each passing moment like the last embers of a dying fire. Aurora stood at its edge, her feet planted on the cold stone, her light flickering in response to the ancient magic's distress. Behind her, the city waited—her family, her friends, everyone she loved and everyone who loved her. Ahead, the darkness pressed against the barrier, reaching, hungry, patient. It had been waiting for centuries, and now its moment was finally approaching.

She took a step forward, her resolve hardening.

"Aurora, stop." Rylan's voice was sharp, cutting through the tense silence. "We need to talk about this."

"There's nothing to talk about." She didn't turn around, couldn't turn around, because if she saw the fear in his eyes, she might lose her nerve.

"There's everything to talk about." He moved to stand in front of her, blocking her path, his brown eyes blazing with a mixture of desperation and determination. "You can't just walk in there alone."

"I won't be alone. Theron's coming with me."

"Theron's a vampire. I'm a wolf. We're not the same as—"

"Not the same as what?"

"Not the same as you." His voice cracked, the sound raw with emotion. "Your light is the key. If something happens to you—"

"Nothing's going to happen to me."

"You don't know that."

"I know that I'm the only one who can do this." She met his eyes, refusing to look away. "I know that if I don't go, the barrier will fail. And everyone we love will die."

Theron moved to stand beside Rylan, his silver eyes fixed on Aurora's face. She could see the fear behind his calm exterior, the same fear that was reflected in Rylan's brown eyes and in her own heart.

"Aurora." His voice was quiet, measured, but she could hear the tremor beneath it. "He's right. This is too dangerous."

"Everything about this has been dangerous." Her voice was steady, but her hands were trembling. "From the moment I first saw the cracks in the barrier, from the moment I first heard the Devourer's voice, everything has been dangerous."

"This is different."

"How?"

"Because there's no backup plan." He stepped closer, close enough that she could see the individual flecks of silver in his irises. "No rescue. If you fail—"

"I won't fail."

"You can't know that."

"I can." Her voice was fierce. "Because I have to."

Rylan grabbed her hand, his grip warm and urgent, his brown eyes pleading.

"Please." His voice was barely a whisper. "Please don't do this."

"Rylan—"

"I almost lost you once." His voice cracked, and she saw the tears glistening in his eyes. "I can't—I can't do it again."

She squeezed his hand, feeling the warmth of his palm against hers, the steady beat of his pulse beneath her fingers. "You won't lose me."

"You can't promise that."

"I can." She met his eyes. "Because I'm coming back. I promised your father. I promised my mother. I'm promising you."

"Promises don't mean anything if you're dead."

"Then I won't die."

Theron stepped closer, his silver eyes searching her face. He didn't grab her hand, didn't try to hold her back—he simply looked at her, and she saw the war raging behind his ancient gaze.

"You're really going through with this," he said.

"I have to."

"I know." He took a breath, steadying himself. "I just wish you didn't."

"Me too." She touched his face, feeling the cool smoothness of his skin beneath her fingers. "But someone has to do it. And I'm the only one who can."

"That's not fair."

"No." She smiled sadly. "But it's the truth."

Lena appeared behind them, her grey eyes red-rimmed, her face pale. She had been crying—Aurora could see it in the streaks on her cheeks, in the tightness of her jaw, in the way her hands trembled at her sides.

"Mom—"

"I know." Lena pulled her into her arms, holding her tight. "I know you have to do this."

"You're not going to try to stop me?"

"Would it work?"

"No."

"Then I won't waste my breath." She pulled back, cupping Aurora's face in her hands. "But you have to come back. Do you understand me? You have to come back."

Aurora's eyes burned. "I will."

"Promise me."

"I promise."

Kael stood at the edge of the crowd, his golden eyes blazing, his jaw tight. He didn't try to stop her—didn't try to argue. He just... watched. His hands were clenched at his sides, his shoulders rigid with barely contained emotion.

"Dad—"

"Don't." His voice was rough, the sound of a man who had spent his life protecting his family and was now being asked to let his daughter walk into danger. "Don't say goodbye."

"I'm not saying goodbye."

"You're walking into a suicide mission."

"I'm walking into a chance to save our home."

He moved toward her, pulling her into his arms, holding her so tight she could barely breathe. "I can't lose you."

"You won't."

"You can't promise that."

"I can." She held him just as tightly. "Because I have too much to live for."

Caspian stood apart from the others, his red eyes fixed on the barrier, his expression unreadable. Aurora had learned to read her father's silences over the years—the way he held himself, the way he breathed, the way his eyes flickered when he was afraid.

He was terrified.

"Papa." She moved to stand beside him, her voice soft. "Talk to me."

"There's nothing to say."

"There's always something to say."

He turned to face her, and she saw the fear in his red eyes—the same fear she had seen when she was small and had fallen from the old oak, the same fear she had seen when she had first crossed the barrier, the same fear that had been there her entire life.

"You're going to die in there," he said quietly.

"I'm not."

"You don't know that."

"I know that I'm strong. I know that I'm not alone. I know that I have people who love me." She took his hand. "That's enough."

Caspian was silent for a long moment, his red eyes searching her face.

Then: "I'm going with you."

Aurora's eyes widened. "What?"

"Someone needs to watch your back. Someone needs to make sure you come home." His voice was steady. "Let it be me."

"Papa—"

"I'm not asking permission." He met her eyes. "I'm telling you. I'm going."

"But the barrier—"

"I built it. I know its weaknesses. I know how to navigate it." He squeezed her hand. "You're not doing this alone."

Rylan stepped forward, his brown eyes blazing.

"Then I'm going too."

"No." Aurora shook her head. "Rylan, you almost died last time."

"And I survived."

"Barely."

"Surviving is surviving." He moved to stand beside Caspian. "I'm not letting you go in there without me."

"Rylan—"

"We're in this together." He met her eyes. "Remember? No more secrets. No more going it alone."

Aurora looked at them—her father, her wolf, her family.

"The barrier is unstable," she said. "If something goes wrong—"

"Nothing's going to go wrong." Caspian's voice was calm. "Because we're going to be there."

"And if it does?"

"Then we face it together."

Lena moved to stand beside Kael, her grey eyes fixed on Aurora—on her daughter, her heir, her heart. She didn't try to stop her, didn't try to argue. She just... watched.

"When you come back," Lena said, "we're going to have a long talk about your reckless decision-making."

Aurora almost smiled. "I look forward to it."

"And you're going to eat every meal I put in front of you for a month."

"Deal."

"And you're going to let me hug you every single day."

"Mom—"

"Those are my terms." Lena's voice cracked. "Take them or leave them."

Aurora pulled her into her arms. "I'll take them."

The barrier flickered, its light dimming further.

Aurora turned to face the dying light. Rylan stood on her left, his brown eyes steady. Caspian stood on her right, his red eyes calm.

"Ready?" she asked.

"Ready," they said.

She stepped toward the barrier.

The light swallowed them.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
