Chapter 98: The Darkness Within

The creature didn't die.

Aurora had burned it with her light, watched it dissolve into shadows, felt its presence fade. But she'd been wrong. It hadn't been destroyed—just scattered. Waiting. Watching.

It returned three nights later.

The attack came at midnight.

Aurora was in her room, staring at the ceiling, replaying the creature's words over and over. The key. The heir. Mine. She couldn't shake them. Couldn't forget the way its burning eyes had fixed on her.

She was still awake when the screaming started.

She ran to the window.

The city was chaos. Shadows moved through the streets—not the familiar darkness of night, but something alive. Something hungry. They struck at the lights—the lanterns, the fires, the glowing windows of homes.

And they struck at the people.

Aurora watched as a shadow creature enveloped a guard, extinguishing his light, draining his life. He collapsed, pale and still, and the creature moved on.

"Mom!" Aurora ran downstairs. "Dad! Papa!"

They were already awake, already moving. Lena stood at the window, her grey eyes fixed on the chaos. Kael was shifting, his wolf form emerging. Caspian was gathering weapons, his red eyes blazing.

"What's happening?" Lena demanded.

"The creature." Aurora's voice shook. "The one that came through the barrier. It's back."

They ran into the streets together.

The city was burning—not with fire, but with darkness. Shadows consumed everything they touched, draining light, draining life, draining hope. People screamed. Children cried. Wolves howled in fury and fear.

Aurora's light blazed as she ran toward the nearest creature.

It turned to face her, its burning eyes widening.

"The heir," it hissed. "The light-bringer. Mine."

"Yours?" Aurora's light blazed brighter. "I belong to no one."

She attacked.

The creature was faster than she expected.

It dodged her light, weaving through the shadows, striking from unexpected angles. Aurora fought back, her light blazing, but she couldn't land a solid hit.

It was toying with her.

"You're strong," it hissed, circling. "But not strong enough. Not yet."

"I'm strong enough to destroy you."

"Are you?" It lunged.

Aurora's light exploded outward, catching the creature mid-attack. It screamed, its form flickering, but it didn't dissolve.

"Your light burns," it said. "But it doesn't destroy. Not me. Not the Devourer. Not darkness itself."

"Then I'll find a way."

"You'll try." The creature smiled—a terrible expression on its shifting face. "And you'll fail."

Kael appeared beside her, his wolf form massive and terrible. He tore into the creature, his fangs finding its shadow-flesh. It screamed, recoiling, and Aurora pressed her advantage.

Her light blazed brighter than ever, pouring into the creature, burning it from within.

"Die," she snarled.

It screamed again—and dissolved.

But she knew it wasn't dead. Just scattered. Waiting. Watching.

The battle continued through the night.

Aurora fought creature after creature, her light blazing, her body aching. Kael fought beside her, his wolf form a blur of fur and fang. Caspian moved through the shadows, his ancient power felling enemies with cold precision. Lena used her light to protect the wounded, to push back the darkness, to hold the line.

Rylan found her in the chaos, his brown eyes wild.

"Aurora! Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." She wasn't. "The creature—the one from the barrier—it's here. It's been here all along."

"The fragment?"

"It's not a fragment anymore. It's grown."

They fought back to back, Aurora's light and Rylan's wolf senses working in tandem. Theron appeared from the shadows, his silver eyes blazing with ancient magic.

"We need to drive them back," he said. "Push them toward the barrier. They're weakest there."

"Then let's go." Aurora turned toward the barrier's glow.

They ran together—Aurora, Rylan, Theron, Kael, Caspian, Lena, and dozens of others who had joined the fight. The creatures fell back before them, unable to withstand the combined light.

But they didn't retreat.

They led.

The barrier glowed ahead, beautiful and dying.

The creatures gathered at its edge, their burning eyes fixed on Aurora.

"The heir," they hissed in unison. "The light-bringer. The key."

Aurora stepped forward, her light blazing.

"I'm not your key. I'm not your heir. I'm not yours."

"You are." The largest creature—the one from the barrier—moved to the front. "The Devourer has been waiting for you. Watching you. Hungering for you."

"Then let it come." Aurora's voice was steady. "I'm not afraid."

"You should be."

The creature lunged.

Aurora met it with her light, blazing brighter than ever before. The clearing blazed—a second sun, a star born of fury and fear and hope.

The creature screamed.

But it didn't stop.

It pushed through her light, through her defenses, through her will. Its burning eyes fixed on hers, and it spoke—not in hisses, not in whispers, but in a voice that echoed through her soul.

"Aurora."

Her blood ran cold.

It knew her name.

The creature reached for her.

Aurora's light flickered—not in warning, but in fear. It knew her name. It knew her face. It knew everything.

"How—" she gasped.

"The Devourer has been watching you since before you were born." The creature's voice was almost gentle. "It knows your light. Your heart. Your name."

"No."

"Yes." It moved closer. "You cannot escape it. You cannot destroy it. You can only—"

Rylan's wolf form slammed into the creature, pushing it back. Theron followed with a blast of ancient magic, weakening it further.

"Aurora!" Rylan's voice was desperate. "Now!"

She raised her hands and poured everything into the light.

The creature dissolved—not scattered, but destroyed.

Aurora's light had finally found its mark, burning through the darkness, consuming it from within. The other creatures fled, retreating into the shadows.

The battle was over.

Aurora collapsed.

She woke in her bed, the morning light streaming through the window.

Lena sat beside her, her grey eyes red-rimmed and weary.

"Mom?"

"You passed out." Lena's voice shook. "Your light—it was too much. You pushed too hard."

"The creature—"

"Gone. You destroyed it." Lena took her hand. "You saved us, Aurora. You saved the city."

Aurora's eyes burned. "It knew my name."

"What?"

"The creature. It knew my name. It said the Devourer has been watching me since before I was born."

Lena's face paled. "That's not possible."

"It knew me, Mom. It knew me."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
