Chapter 6

Author: Asteria
So it was that incident again.

I no longer had the strength to explain. After all, I had cried and screamed explanations a thousand times before, and the only answer I ever received was solitary confinement.

Father glared at me, the disgust in his eyes entirely unhidden.

"If I knew you would turn out like this, I never should have kept you by my side back then."

"Go to the confinement room and reflect on yourself! No food for you today!"

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and let out a faint smile. "There's no need to trouble yourself."

I went to my room and grabbed the small bundle I had packed earlier. Mother glanced at what I was holding, seemingly surprised that I was actually leaving. "We just scolded you a little, and you're going to run away from home over this?"

Father's expression had already turned icy cold. "Since you've always felt we were partial, then don't stay here another minute!"

"I'd love to see if you can still live as comfortably as you do now once you leave this family!"

In the past, every time I heard words like these, I would be terrified, afraid that they would truly abandon me, afraid that I would no longer have a home.

Yet right now, there wasn't a single shred of grief left in my heart.

I felt a sense of relief, as if I had finally been waiting for these exact words.

This family had never been my home to begin with.

I didn't give them a single backward glance, turning on my heel and walking toward the door.

From behind me came Father's voice, barely suppressing his rage.

"Since you detest this home so much, starting today, the Blackthorn family will no longer give you any protection."

"Once you step out of this door, you're on your own."

"Perfect," I whispered. "I had no intention of coming back anyway."

I pushed open the heavy doors of the manor, greeted face-first by the night's biting wind. From inside came the sound of breaking glass.

I had barely descended the stone steps when Dylan caught up to me.

"Amelia, wait."

He unbuckled a leather pouch from his waist and drew out a few silver coins, his tone stiff.

"This is enough to last you a few days. You have nowhere to go right now. Find an inn in town for a couple of days and come back when Mom and Dad cool down."

This was barely a single day's allowance for Clover. It seemed they had already accepted as fact that I was destined to live a life far shabbier than hers.

Before I could even answer, Clover came trotting up to us, her voice sickly sweet.

"Dylan, since Amelia has already made up her mind to leave, let's respect her choice."

She hesitated for a brief second, then unclasped the Moonstone necklace from her neck and held it out to me.

"Here, take this necklace. Even though I can hardly bear to part with it, you can pawn it for money."

A cold laugh echoed in my chest. There was no way she was offering it out of the goodness of her heart. Everyone had seen Mom and Dad personally place this necklace around her neck today. If I were seen wearing it, they'd accuse me of stealing it, just as they always did.

"I don't want it," I said.

Dylan's expression darkened. "Clover is willing to give you her own coming-of-age gift, and you're still acting like this?"

"I don't want anything," I repeated.

Dylan's voice turned icy as he pulled back the silver coins in his hand.

"Fine. Then take nothing. Don't ever come back."

He took Clover by the hand and turned away. As they walked off, Clover glanced back over her shoulder, giving me a smug, triumphant smirk.

I couldn't be bothered to care, turning away to walk past the manor's grand gates alone.

Before I had gotten very far, a sharp, searing pain burst in my chest.

I leaned heavily against a roadside wall, gasping violently for air.

My damaged wolf was convulsing in agony. I knew my body couldn't hold on much longer.

So the moment my parents returned home, she threw herself onto her knees, weeping desperately."Dad! Mom! I know Amelia's death is connected to me... I don't expect you to forgive me right away! You can punish me however you want!"Tears streamed down her cheeks in heavy torrents. "I just... I just don't want to lose you! I've been an orphan since I was little, and you were the ones who brought me home. I truly regarded this place as my real home!""That's why I was so terrified that once Amelia came back, you wouldn't want me anymore. I know what I did was wrong. I'll do whatever you tell me to do from now on!"A heavy silence lingered in the room for a long time. Clover peeked up through her lashes, convinced her soft-hearted act had worked once again.Yet my parents only stared down at her with icy indifference, without a single trace of emotion on their faces."Clover, stop fooling yourself. You're terrified of losing the Blackthorn family. You're terrified of falling from your hig

An overwhelming, suffocating pressure washed over her. She couldn't even push herself up, coughing up several mouthfuls of blood."You still have the nerve to bring her up?!" Father roared. "The Blackthorn family raised you like a precious pearl in the palm of our hands, and you turned out to be such a venomous creature!"Panicking, Clover stammered, "I... I don't know what you're talking about...""You've lied to us for so many years. Are you going to keep acting now?" Dylan threw the old phone down right in front of her face. "Look at it yourself. You disgust us."As she watched the video, her face drained of all color. Throwing the phone aside, she crawled toward them on her hands and knees, desperately trying to play the innocent victim."It's not like that! I was just joking around with Amelia! She knows best what actually happened... Call Amelia back so we can confront each other face to face…""She's never coming back!" Before Clover could finish, Mother charged forward, grabbin

Everyone was startled."Hello, is this Miss Blackthorn? Regarding the burial plot you inquired about earlier, you can reserve it by paying just a 10% deposit. Are you still interested?"Dylan's body swayed. "I remember now... So that day, she was actually looking at burial plots... She knew she was dying... Dad, Mom, we blamed Amelia all along! For all these years, we were so horribly wrong!"He finally broke down, bursting into agonizing sobs.Mother sobbed uncontrollably, "We want this plot. We owe Amelia too much. This is the very last thing we can ever do for her."Yet Martha stood firmly in front of them, blocking their way."She doesn't want to be buried here. Before she passed, Amelia told me that after her death, she wanted to return to the valley and be laid to rest alongside her grandmother."Father's face darkened."She is our daughter. Her funeral arrangements are not for a mere cook to decide.""Besides, you aren't completely blameless in this either! Why didn't you take h

Arriving at Martha's cabin, they met up with Dylan and knocked on the door.Martha opened the door, her expression devoid of any surprise.Mother's eyes were red with desperation. "Where is Amelia? Is she here? Let her come out!"When Martha didn't answer right away, Dylan grabbed her arm with force. "Where did you hide her?! Let us see her right now!"Father immediately pulled Dylan back, though he too had lost his usual composure, demanding sharply, "I am her father. Tell me, did she come here? If she is still with you, you had better hand her over, or this will be considered kidnapping."Martha looked at them with cold eyes, turning around. "Follow me."They followed her into the cabin.Martha pushed open the door to the inner room. Resting on the bed was a figure covered entirely beneath a white sheet.Father's body swayed violently. "This is..."Martha lowered her eyes. "She passed away last night. It was very peaceful.""Impossible!" Father charged forward and yanked back a corne

Clover bit her lip, putting on a pitiful act. "Dad, I... I suddenly feel unwell...""Weren't you perfectly fine just a second ago? Come, eat a little more," Mother insisted."Dad, Mom, I really feel sick... I'll go upstairs and rest for a bit, okay?"Clover hurriedly set down her fork, turning on her heel to rush upstairs."Stop right there," Father barked. "Since you feel unwell, let your mother check if you're having an allergic reaction."Clover instinctively took a step back. That subtle movement caused Mother to frown. "Clover... what exactly are you afraid of?"Father commanded coldly, "Go up to her room and bring down every single piece of medication in there. Do not leave a single bottle behind."Clover turned and bolted upstairs, frantically turning her room upside down the moment she burst inside."How can this be... It was right here. Where did it go...""Are you looking for this?" Clover whipped her head around to find Mother standing at the doorway, holding a bottle of str
