Chapter 7

Author: Asteria
Still, I bit my lip, forcing my heavy, leaden feet to keep moving forward step by step.

It wasn't until the brightly lit mansion had completely vanished behind me that I finally stopped. I used the tiny bit of money I had left to rent a room in the cheapest, most run-down inn I could find.

That night, lying on the narrow bed, I curled myself into a tight ball.

In the endless stretch of darkness, my mind drifted back to my puphood.

Before Clover ever came to the family, I had been my parents' most cherished daughter.

Back then, Father was still just a young Gamma warrior in the pack, and Mother had only recently become a junior healer.

They often had to march out with the pack's war parties, gone for weeks or months at a time, leaving them with no energy or time to care for me as a tiny pup.

After wrestling with the decision for a long time, crying over me for a whole day, they finally delivered me to my grandmother's cabin in the valley.

They swore to me that they would come back for me as soon as they could.

For six whole years, I sat on the wooden doorstep every single day, staring down the little trail leading out of the valley, waiting obediently.

Then came the day my parents finally returned, holding another pup.

She was the daughter of Father's late comrade, who had fallen during a pack migration guard detail, leaving her an orphan.

During those years away, it was Clover who had been by their side.

I was overjoyed. Not only had I been reunited with my parents, but I had also gained a little sister.

So, I shared half my toys with her, gave her the new dresses Mother bought me, and secretly saved the sweets Father brought home just for her.

I never noticed the hatred brewing in her eyes, as if I were a thief who had stolen what was hers.

That winter, Clover ran off to play on the back mountain.

When I found her, she was standing right at the edge of a steep drop-off. I ran forward to pull her back.

Just as I got close to her, she suddenly turned around and grabbed my wrists, trying to swap positions and hurl me off the edge.

Luckily, she wasn't as strong as I was. I instinctively shook off her grip and, losing her balance, she fell over the side herself.

Fortunately, the trees below caught her, leaving her with only minor scrapes.

Yet because of that, I became the monster who tried to push her adopted sister off a cliff, punished with solitary confinement.

Clover tasted victory, and from then on, her sabotage escalated.

She once dumped all her belongings out and asked me to help organize her room, only to bring Mom and Dad in while I was cleaning, sobbing that I had deliberately trashed her space.

My parents renovated my bedroom and gave it to her, tossing all my things into the storage room.

She secretly used my name to buy a fortune in luxury goods on credit. When the shop owner came knocking on our door, my parents never bothered to investigate. They confiscated my allowance forever, leaving me to work day and night to pay off the debt, while all those luxuries ended up in Clover's jewelry box.

I explained myself so many times. But no one ever believed me. Instead, Clover twisted my words, claiming I was starved of affection as a pup and thus craved attention and threw tantrums out of jealousy.

Gradually, I stopped explaining. Explanation had long since lost all meaning.

At this moment, just as in every lonely second of my past, I missed the days I spent with my grandmother as a pup.

Every winter, Grandmother would sit by the hearth, brew me a bowl of hot meat soup, and stroke my head, saying, "Eat up, little one. Only when you grow big and strong can you see your mom and dad again."

Grandmother had passed away many years ago, resting beside her little wooden cabin.

I used to think that when I had the time, I would surely go back to visit her.

Now, I no longer had the strength to walk that far into the valley to pay my respects.

The following evening, I sat by the fireplace, slowly chewing on a piece of rough, stale black bread provided by the inn.

I had taken only a few bites when a message arrived from Dylan.

[Now that we've tracked down your location, Clover went out of her way to bring you food, drinks, and money. She's been trying so hard to get close to you. Don't break her heart this time.]

The next second, Clover strutted into the room, flanked by two attendants while the innkeeper bowed and scraped beside her. She wore an exquisite, silver-white gown.

She tilted her head up arrogantly. "All of you, out. I want to catch up with Amelia."

Mother was removed from her position as Chief Healer, and Dylan was stripped of his title as a Gamma Warrior.Everything they once cherished was stripped away, a direct price paid for turning a blind eye to my suffering.Meanwhile, I opened my eyes beneath a sea of silvery moonlight.A voice echoed from far away, divine and ethereal."Amelia..."I lifted my gaze. So the moment my parents returned home, she threw herself onto her knees, weeping desperately."Dad! Mom! I know Amelia's death is connected to me... I don't expect you to forgive me right away! You can punish me however you want!"Tears streamed down her cheeks in heavy torrents. "I just... I just don't want to lose you! I've been an orphan since I was little, and you were the ones who brought me home. I truly regarded this place as my real home!""That's why I was so terrified that once Amelia came back, you wouldn't want me anymore. I know what I did was wrong. I'll do whatever you tell me to do from now on!"A heavy silence lingered in the room for a long time. Clover peeked up through her lashes, convinced her soft-hearted act had worked once again.Yet my parents only stared down at her with icy indifference, without a single trace of emotion on their faces."Clover, stop fooling yourself. You're terrified of losing the Blackthorn family. You're terrified of falling from your hig

An overwhelming, suffocating pressure washed over her. She couldn't even push herself up, coughing up several mouthfuls of blood."You still have the nerve to bring her up?!" Father roared. "The Blackthorn family raised you like a precious pearl in the palm of our hands, and you turned out to be such a venomous creature!"Panicking, Clover stammered, "I... I don't know what you're talking about...""You've lied to us for so many years. Are you going to keep acting now?" Dylan threw the old phone down right in front of her face. "Look at it yourself. You disgust us."As she watched the video, her face drained of all color. Throwing the phone aside, she crawled toward them on her hands and knees, desperately trying to play the innocent victim."It's not like that! I was just joking around with Amelia! She knows best what actually happened... Call Amelia back so we can confront each other face to face…""She's never coming back!" Before Clover could finish, Mother charged forward, grabbin

Everyone was startled."Hello, is this Miss Blackthorn? Regarding the burial plot you inquired about earlier, you can reserve it by paying just a 10% deposit. Are you still interested?"Dylan's body swayed. "I remember now... So that day, she was actually looking at burial plots... She knew she was dying... Dad, Mom, we blamed Amelia all along! For all these years, we were so horribly wrong!"He finally broke down, bursting into agonizing sobs.Mother sobbed uncontrollably, "We want this plot. We owe Amelia too much. This is the very last thing we can ever do for her."Yet Martha stood firmly in front of them, blocking their way."She doesn't want to be buried here. Before she passed, Amelia told me that after her death, she wanted to return to the valley and be laid to rest alongside her grandmother."Father's face darkened."She is our daughter. Her funeral arrangements are not for a mere cook to decide.""Besides, you aren't completely blameless in this either! Why didn't you take h

Arriving at Martha's cabin, they met up with Dylan and knocked on the door.Martha opened the door, her expression devoid of any surprise.Mother's eyes were red with desperation. "Where is Amelia? Is she here? Let her come out!"When Martha didn't answer right away, Dylan grabbed her arm with force. "Where did you hide her?! Let us see her right now!"Father immediately pulled Dylan back, though he too had lost his usual composure, demanding sharply, "I am her father. Tell me, did she come here? If she is still with you, you had better hand her over, or this will be considered kidnapping."Martha looked at them with cold eyes, turning around. "Follow me."They followed her into the cabin.Martha pushed open the door to the inner room. Resting on the bed was a figure covered entirely beneath a white sheet.Father's body swayed violently. "This is..."Martha lowered her eyes. "She passed away last night. It was very peaceful.""Impossible!" Father charged forward and yanked back a corne

Clover bit her lip, putting on a pitiful act. "Dad, I... I suddenly feel unwell...""Weren't you perfectly fine just a second ago? Come, eat a little more," Mother insisted."Dad, Mom, I really feel sick... I'll go upstairs and rest for a bit, okay?"Clover hurriedly set down her fork, turning on her heel to rush upstairs."Stop right there," Father barked. "Since you feel unwell, let your mother check if you're having an allergic reaction."Clover instinctively took a step back. That subtle movement caused Mother to frown. "Clover... what exactly are you afraid of?"Father commanded coldly, "Go up to her room and bring down every single piece of medication in there. Do not leave a single bottle behind."Clover turned and bolted upstairs, frantically turning her room upside down the moment she burst inside."How can this be... It was right here. Where did it go...""Are you looking for this?" Clover whipped her head around to find Mother standing at the doorway, holding a bottle of str
