Chapter 3

Penulis: Ellie C
After Raphael left, the room fell silent except for the faint hum of the IV pump.

Before leaving for an emergency business trip overseas, my mother came to sit beside my bed.

“Raphael said you slipped and fell into the fountain,” she said, studying my face. “Is that really what happened?”

The truth rose to my lips.

All I had to do was tell her. She would believe me. She would make all three of them pay.

Then I remembered the knife against my throat. I saw my nanny lying dead in some alley and my father’s mausoleum reduced to rubble.

I had no way of knowing how long the three of them had had men planted among our guards, or how many people inside the Rossi family were already loyal to them. Until I knew whom I could trust, I had to keep the truth to myself.

I dug my nails into my palm beneath the blanket and forced myself to nod.

“I slipped.”

My mother brushed the damp hair from my forehead. The worry in her eyes nearly broke me.

As she turned away, I bit down on my lip and swallowed every word I wanted to call after her.

I had just filled out the ring-sizing form the Capellos had sent over. Blair walked in carrying a bowl of steaming semolina porridge.

The moment she saw that we were alone, every trace of vulnerability vanished from her face.

“I hear you’re making your engagement to that corpse in the Capello mansion official in four weeks.”

She stopped beside the bed and looked down at me.

“So what if he’s the Don? He’s still a vegetable lying in bed waiting to die. You may be the Rossi heiress, but you’ll spend the rest of your life married to a man who might as well already be dead. Do you honestly think sacrificing yourself will make them feel sorry for you?” Her smile sharpened. “Marry him if you want. Raphael and the others will still love me.”

Pale and exhausted, I rested against the pillows and stared at her. I couldn’t even be bothered to react.

My indifference only enraged her.

Without warning, Blair snatched up the bowl and flung the scalding porridge across my face and neck.

“Ah!”

White-hot pain ripped through me the instant it hit my skin.

Blisters rose almost immediately, and my skin turned an angry red. I screamed as sweat soaked my hair.

“Get someone in here! Call the doctor!” I cried, my entire body shaking from the pain.

The door flew open, and Raphael, Matteo, and Luca rushed into the room.

“What happened?”

I thought at least one of them would notice the burns covering my face and neck, but they all went to Blair.

She had already crumpled to the floor. Clutching a shard of the broken bowl, she sobbed uncontrollably.

“I’m sorry... I only wanted to bring Miss Rossi something to eat, but she lost her temper and knocked the bowl out of my hands. It was so hot...”

“Blair!”

Raphael rushed to her and gathered her into his arms. The instant he noticed the tiny red mark on her finger, his breath caught.

“You burned your hand? Someone get a doctor!”

Matteo and Luca crowded around her, their expressions grim.

I pressed my hands to my blistered face and neck, trembling so violently I could barely speak.

“Doctor... Please call the doctor. My face...”

Raphael finally turned toward me. His gaze caught on the burns covering my face, and for a moment, something like concern broke through. Then Blair sobbed, and his expression hardened again.

“Why do you always have to push her this far, Alia?” he said. “Blair came here to take care of you, and you threw scalding porridge at her?”

“I didn’t.” Tears burned in my eyes. “She threw it at me.”

“Enough,” Luca cut in, his voice cold with impatience. “You’ve always been able to withstand more than Blair. Stop turning everything into a battle between the two of you.”

Matteo strode to the doorway and issued a cold order to the staff outside.

“Send every servant in the main house home for the day. If the family doctor comes, turn him away. I’m not letting her turn another minor injury into a reason to have Blair punished.”

“And take her phone until she calms down,” Raphael added, still holding Blair. “Otherwise, she’ll call Mrs. Rossi, twist this into an attack, and have all of us thrown out.”

Then the three of them rushed Blair—and the tiny blister on her finger—to a private hospital.

My skin burned throughout the night.

When I failed to check in with my mother as we had agreed I would every day, she cut her overseas business trip short and returned home the following afternoon.

When she entered my room and saw the infected burns covering my face and neck, her eyes immediately filled with tears. This was a woman who had ruled the Rossi family with an iron fist for years, yet the sight of me nearly shattered her composure.

The doctor was summoned at once. After examining me, his expression turned grave.

“Mrs. Rossi, these are severe burns. There are also traces of a caustic cleaning agent in the wounds. Any longer without treatment, and her face could have been permanently disfigured.”

My mother looked from the burns on my face to the three men. The pain in her eyes hardened into fury.

“Who gave you the right to leave my daughter like this all night?” she demanded.

“Her engagement announcement is less than four weeks away. How is she supposed to stand beside him with her face burned like this? If Alia is left with a single scar, every one of you will pay.”

A fortune’s worth of fireworks burst above the castle. Vito held my hand as we walked down an aisle lined with deep red roses. Members of the Rossi and Capello families filled the seats on both sides. My mother sat in the front row. Her eyes were red, but she was smiling. Before the ceremony began, someone delivered an unsigned letter. One look at the familiar handwriting told me who had sent it.I did not open it. I tossed it into the blazing fireplace. The flames consumed the paper within seconds.Vito made no attempt to stop me. When I returned to his side, he simply tightened his hold on my hand.“You don’t want to know what he wrote?”“It doesn’t matter.”The corner of Vito’s mouth lifted. “Then I suppose I don’t have to worry about my bride changing her mind.”“You were worried?”“Of course.” He leaned close to my ear. “I waited all these years for you to finally choose the right man.”As the ceremony neared its end, he had an attorney bring forward a document.“I hereby transfer

Alia's POVOnce my mother learned the full truth, she gave no one another chance to defend themselves. She expelled Blair from the Rossi family and ordered Raphael, Matteo, and Luca out of the estate before dawn. The three men refused the severance money she offered, insisting they would repay the Rossi family for raising them.I found the claim almost laughable.Raphael stopped me at the foot of the stairs, his voice raw.“Alia, I didn’t know...”I looked at him calmly. “You never tried to know.”Raphael’s eyes were bloodshot. It took him a long time to force out the words.“I admit it. I always knew you loved me.”“I knew that if I threatened to call off our engagement, you would give in to Blair. I thought that no matter what I did, you would choose me in the end.”For the first time, he abandoned every trace of pride and pleaded with me. “I’ll send Blair away. I’ll tell everyone the truth. Just don’t marry Vito. Please.”Matteo and Luca stood nearby, their faces equally hollow.Mat

The steward pulled up the footage from the day Blair carried the hot porridge into Alia's room. The kitchen cameras had captured everything. After making sure she was alone, Blair took a bottle of corrosive cleaning solution from the supply cabinet and poured it into the steaming porridge herself. She practiced crying in front of the mirror several times before picking up the bowl and heading toward Alia’s room. There were no cameras inside the bedroom, but the hallway recording had captured every sound. When the bowl shattered, Alia's scream came first.Alia kept begging someone to call a doctor. Blair did not begin crying and apologizing until she heard the three men approaching. When they rushed into the room, not one of them took a proper look at the burns on Alia's face.Raphael had looked at Alia once. But the moment Blair began crying, he decided Alia was pretending to be hurt again.Matteo had personally ordered every servant to leave and had the doctor turned away. The three o

Raphael’s POVRaphael had no memory of walking back to his room. All he could see was Vito fastening the silver medal around Alia's neck. After the kidnapping when Alia was seventeen, she had followed Raphael everywhere, telling him again and again that she would never forget what he had done for her.Raphael had never asked why she was so certain it was him.He enjoyed her gratitude and devotion, accepting every bit of her affection as though it belonged to him.No matter how fiercely Raphael denied it, he had feelings for Alia.He simply refused to be seen as a man the Rossi family had raised to marry her. Even more than that, he refused to admit that everything he had came from a woman. So he rejected Alia from his lofty perch, all while remaining certain she would never leave.Blair was delicate and obedient. She looked at him with worship in her eyes and made him feel like a man who could protect someone without relying on the Rossi family.Alia was too strong. So strong that all

I stared at Vito in disbelief. “If you were already awake, why did you keep it a secret?”Vito led me to a private sitting room upstairs. The moment the door closed, some of his composure slipped. He braced one hand against the edge of a table, his breathing turning labored.I reached out to steady him without thinking. “You haven’t recovered yet?”“I was unconscious for too long. I can’t stay on my feet for extended periods yet.”He took advantage of the moment to wrap a hand around my wrist, making no attempt to let go.“Is my fiancée worried about me?”I tried twice to pull free and failed. “I would rather you not collapse at our engagement party.”Vito gave a low laugh. Only then did he tell me the truth about his recovery from the car accident. The damage to his brain had begun healing six months ago, but members of the Capello family’s lesser branches had no intention of letting him wake. They bribed members of his medical team to keep him on dangerously high doses of sedatives,

Vito made his way through the crowd toward me. After years in a vegetative state, he was leaner than the man I had heard about, but the authority in his eyes had not diminished in the slightest. He stopped in the center of the ballroom and swept an indifferent gaze over the crowd.“An engagement party shouldn’t be missing its groom. It seems I arrived just in time.”“I’ll ask you one more time.”His gaze dropped to Raphael’s hand.“Who gave you the nerve to touch my Donna?”Raphael released me on instinct and stepped back, his face tightening.Vito stopped in front of me and lifted my arm to examine the red marks around my wrist. His touch was almost gentle. His eyes were anything but.“You hurt her hand. Yours will pay for it. Fair is fair.”Two bodyguards seized Raphael at once.I gave Vito’s sleeve a light tug. “This is our engagement party.”Vito lowered his eyes to me, and some of the murderous intent surrounding him actually receded.“As you wish.”Raphael’s expression darkened f
