Chapter 5

Author: Yolky Pizza
I didn't expect him to come back so quickly. Bianca's baby must have survived.

He'd left her at the hospital and rushed back to interrogate the culprit.

Everyone in the mansion had been sent away, leaving just the two of us.

He dragged me out and threw me onto the couch in the main hall.

Alessio sat on the opposite end, his presence suffocating, tension radiating from every inch of him.

His men checked the security system and found every camera between the service hall and the storage room had been wiped for exactly that window of time.

Only someone with authority over the Costa estate could have wiped that much footage. Alessio considered this for a heartbeat, then fixed his fury on me.

Nearly blinded by fury, he drew his gun and pressed it against my forehead.

"Why did you hurt her? I promised I'd give you a child someday. Why can't you stop being jealous of Bianca?"

"Behave, and you will always have your place as my wife."

His absurd promises made me sick. I'd gone a full day and night without food, and all my stomach could produce was acid.

Gunfire shattered the silence. The front doors burst open, and a tactical team in black flooded the hall, weapons trained on Alessio's men.

One shot knocked the gun from Alessio's hand. The next thing I knew, I was in my mother's arms.

Alessio froze for only an instant before his training kicked in. He scanned the room, counting heads and weapons, then stood up slowly, his face ashen.

"I don't know who you are, but you're on Rossi property. Lower your weapons, and I'll forget this happened."

My mother ignored him.

She held me tight, looking down at my swollen cheek and frail body. The warmth in her eyes turned to ice, degree by degree.

Then she passed me to someone behind her, rose to her feet, and turned around.

"Elena is my daughter. I'm Cecilia Nightingale, head of the Nightingale Family, and I'm taking her home. Try to stop me."

The Nightingale Family. The moment that name hit the air, I felt Alessio go rigid.

The Nightingale Family was the oldest and most secretive criminal organization on the East Coast. Its reach was vast, and no rival crossed it lightly.

"She is my wife. You can't take her."

Alessio clenched his fists. For the first time, the man who was always composed, always in control, had a tremor in his voice.

No one answered. Two Nightingale guards moved to help me stand.

Alessio suddenly lunged in front of me, his eyes bloodshot, sweeping the room. Every word was ground out through clenched teeth.

"She is my wife. Touch her and see what happens."

Cecilia laughed.

Before the laughter faded, a guard behind her moved without a sound.

A suppressed shot cracked through the room.

Alessio's arm dropped at an unnatural angle. Whatever bone the bullet had struck, he could no longer block my path.

As I was helped out the front door, I caught a glimpse of Alessio from the corner of my eye. He was on his knees, clutching his shattered arm, his eyes locked on my retreating figure.

I turned away without a shred of hesitation, gulping down the fresh air outside.

Sitting in the Nightingale Family's car, I watched the Costa estate disappear behind us.

I rested my forehead against the cool glass, closed my eyes, and let out a long breath.

I was finally free.

Alessio apparently believed that, after everything he'd done, I ought to have forgiven him.A week later, my butler came to my study and said Alessio was at the door with something that belonged to me."Let him in."When I saw Alessio again, he was thinner, with deep shadows beneath his eyes and exhaustion in every line of his body.He held out a jewelry box. I told the butler to take it.Inside was the ruby suite the federal agents had recovered from Bianca.I glanced at the jewelry and gave him a brief nod."You've delivered it. You can go now. Thank you for coming all this way."A flash of hurt crossed his face, but he kept talking."Elena, Bianca is in federal custody. And I made the Costas pay for everything they did to you.""Can you forgive me? Will you give me another chance?"I almost laughed at the absurdity."I'm the Nightingale heir. Why would I want a Don whose own capos are preparing to depose him?"He froze. He'd always been the one looking down on others. This was the f

Meanwhile, Bianca had already boarded a ship bound overseas. She had a new name and a forged passport. Just when she believed she was safe, sirens screamed across the terminal. Then footsteps behind her."Bianca Costa, you're under arrest for grand theft, passport fraud, and money laundering. Keep your hands where we can see them."Bianca spun around.Unmarked SUVs blocked the pier. Federal agents spread out beneath the floodlights, and the woman in charge approached with an arrest warrant in hand."You've got the wrong person."Bianca forced a smile."My name isn't Bianca Costa. You have the wrong person."The agents ignored her. One opened her suitcase and lifted out the ruby suite.Bianca's smile froze. The lead agent unfolded the warrant and read the charges in a measured voice."This one-of-a-kind ruby necklace, with its matching earrings and bracelet, is valued at fifty million dollars and registered to Elena Nightingale as a gift from her biological family. It was reported stole

"I'm prepared to pay any price."The voice on the other end clearly hadn't expected that. A pause."One year of profits from two trans-Pacific shipping lanes in exchange for your thirty-percent stake in Greyhaven Terminal."The Costa Family's people went silent.Victor was doing the math. One year from those routes exceeded three years of the Costa Family's total revenue. Only a fool would refuse."...Deal."The night the agreement was signed, Alessio stood at his office window, watching the traffic below. His assistant knocked and entered with a new file."Sir, the transfer is complete. Greyhaven Terminal is ours. Once the Costas signed, we used our contacts to blacklist both shipping routes. They received the money, but they have nowhere to dock.""Good.""Also, Bianca Costa has been liquidating assets. She's consolidated just under one million dollars. Should we freeze the accounts?"Alessio was quiet for a moment."No. Let her take it."The assistant didn't ask questions. He bowed

At the hospital. When the doctor arrived to take Bianca for an amniocentesis, she finally panicked. No one expected that Bianca, supported down the stairs by two attendants, would somehow lose her footing and tumble to the bottom. When Alessio arrived at the hospital again, Bianca was lying weakly in bed.A paternity test result was placed before him.The hospital report identified Alessio as the biological father."Are you satisfied now, Don Rossi?"Bianca looked at him with reddened eyes, the picture of fragile innocence."You nearly killed our child over forged prenatal records."Alessio hadn't expected things to go this far. He'd nearly caused the death of his second child.Looking at Bianca's deathly pale face, he turned away. The report sat in front of him, but something in him refused to believe it."Get some rest. I'll come back in a few days."Back in his office, Alessio crushed out his cigarette and called the independent laboratory he had hired out of state."How much longer

Lately, Alessio had been drowning in Family crises. The capos questioned his judgment more loudly with each passing day.His cousin Antonio Rossi, whom Alessio had always dismissed as useless, was quietly winning over several veteran capos and digging through two years of trade records. Then there was Bianca. As her pregnancy advanced, Alessio's patience dwindled. She called in the middle of the night to sob about nightmares and cramps and beg him to come over.He used to feel sorry for her. Now he only felt annoyed. Then the anonymous package appeared on his desk.Inside was a photocopy of Bianca's prenatal records. The dates were a full two weeks earlier than when the child should have been conceived.Alessio stared at the numbers, his fingers tightening around the paper. He'd seen all of Bianca's prenatal reports. He'd checked every date. But he'd never thought to compare them side by side. Because there'd been no reason to doubt her.The woman he'd loved for seven years, the fright

Word of the Costa banquet raced through the underworld by morning. The Rossi Family's capos reacted first. But she told me not to worry."The moment you agreed to come home, I had everyone around you investigated.""I sent the Rossi capos every secret Alessio has been hiding. To protect the Family, they'll have to cut him loose."Cecilia handed me a bowl of chicken broth, and for the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to be cared for by family. Her people later told me the bullet had damaged the nerves in Alessio's arm. He would regain some use of it, but never full strength. He told people he'd been "attacked by an unknown hostile force," but most insiders had already heard the truth. The head of the Rossi Family had brutalized his own wife for an outsider. Then the wife's birth family arrived, shattered his arm, and took her home. When the story reached the upper circles, everyone went quiet.Everyone understood the message. Alessio had shown terrible judgment and
