Chapter 2

Author: Wishfull
Back in the dorm again, my roommate pointed at the desk.

"I put your portfolio out for you. You've really made up your mind about transferring?"

I flipped open the portfolio and nodded without a word. Josie Palmer leaned in beside me, following my gaze across the pages.

"You're seriously talented. What possessed you to sign up for the music department in the first place?"

It was because Aria and Reid both chose music and insisted on bringing me along. So, I gave up the art department and switched to music instead. But I never actually liked it, and learning music theory was miserable.

At first, Reid would patiently walk me through things. But eventually he just sighed, clearly losing patience.

"You're not cut out for music. It's not like you're going into this field anyway, so just pass your exams and call it good."

After that, Reid never helped me again. But I'd walk past the practice room and see him carefully guiding Aria through her lessons. He'd break concepts down for her piece by piece, hold her hands, and show her how to play new songs.

With me, he'd just demonstrate a few times and point out what I did wrong. So, his patience depended on who he was giving it to.

Three days later, I walked out of the academic building into a downpour. Reid and Aria caught up from behind and handed me an umbrella.

"Maddie, the professor says the group materials and video need to be turned in right away. You've got nothing going on, so go submit them for us."

I took the umbrella with my eyes lowered. "What if I don't have time?"

"Come on, don't be difficult. Aria and I are both busy, and it's not like it'll take you long."

Something felt off. "Then where are you two going?"

"We're heading to a concert. Just go on back."

My heart sank. "Just the two of you?"

Aria peeked out from behind Reid, looking sheepish. "We could only get two tickets last month, so we didn't mention it."

The excuse was so familiar it made me go numb. "Did you really only manage to get two, or did you only buy two? And that extra ticket you gave me before was just one someone else didn't want, wasn't it?"

Aria's face drained of color and her lips trembled, but nothing came out.

Reid pulled her behind him and looked at me with open disapproval. "Do you have to put it like that? You don't even care about music, so does it even matter if you had one?"

I couldn't stop shaking. I thought about all those days and nights in the practice room, playing the same pieces over and over, crying while I practiced. And in his eyes, none of that counted as caring.

"Why would you think I don't care?" I choked out.

"Your exam scores are terrible. Isn't that proof enough?"

Aria tugged at Reid's sleeve. "Reid, why would you say that to her face!"

Then she took my hand and said timidly, "Maddie, he just means you've been spending a lot of time on painting lately. That's all."

Reid cut in. "And that is a waste of time."

I looked at him and almost laughed at how ridiculous it was. They loved music, so they felt perfectly free to look down on my love for painting. They'd dragged me into their world and then resented me for not keeping up.

I wasn't bad at what I did. My talent had even been recognized. But they either couldn't see that or refused to.

I yanked my hand free from Aria and faced Reid head-on. "If you think what I love is a waste of time, then let's break up."

They both froze. Then Reid let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

"Using a breakup as a threat, Madeline? When did you get so childish? If you've got time to throw a tantrum, you've got time to go practice."

And with that, he took Aria and disappeared into the rain.

Time slipped by, and before I knew it, fall had arrived. Cedric and I talked about staying a little longer before heading back, but he told me, with a suspicious amount of secrecy, that he had a surprise for me. So, the plans were put on hold.On the first day of fall, Cedric dragged me out of the house bright and early. In the car, he told me to close my eyes, and I did as I was told. When the door opened, the familiar smell of paint and turpentine hung in the air, and I already had a feeling I knew what this was."Okay!" His voice came from behind me, buzzing with excitement.I opened my eyes slowly, and in front of me was a sea of pink. He'd painted an entire wall in soft pink, and even the couch and coffee table had been swapped out to match.I couldn't find the words. On the windowsill sat a little potted plant we'd picked out together. An easel stood by the window with a portrait propped up on it.Cedric had painted me.I stepped closer and leaned in to look. In the painti

On the way to the bookstall, we ran into Reid again. He rushed up to us, ignoring Cedric's warning, and held up the sketchbook with both hands, eyes full of hope."Do you remember this? You said we were the ones who gave it to you. I went back and got it."Cedric's expression twisted with disgust, and he was about to say something, but I stopped him. I took the sketchbook, plucked Cedric's lighter from his pocket, and set the whole thing on fire.Reid lunged for it like he'd lost his mind, trying to put out the flames. He dropped to his knees and grabbed at the burning pages, trying to hold on to something. He didn't even notice his hands getting burned. In the end, all he was left with was a handful of ash. He broke down completely, tears falling heavy and fast into the pile of gray."Why won't you even leave me this one thing to remember?"I looked down at him. "Things that don't matter should be thrown away. Keeping them only makes things harder. You know that better than anyo

I followed Cedric to a small studio. It wasn't big, but every inch of it was packed. He pulled me over to a little couch in the corner and sat us both down."When I was a kid, my parents didn't support me going into art either. They thought painting was for people with no real future, something you only did if you weren't smart enough to do anything else."It wasn't until my grandmother went to bat for me against the whole family that I was finally allowed to study art. That's when I learned that there will always be someone who believes in you."My heart gave a quiet thump. Cedric looked straight at me, his eyes soft."The truth is, the exhibition wasn't the first time I saw you."I stared at him in surprise. He took my hand and slowly traced his thumb across my palm."It was that fall, at the secondhand bookstall by the side entrance of the art school. I saw you sitting on the ground, flipping through a book and sketching at the same time. The setup was pretty rough, but you lo

Madeline's POVThree years later, Cedric and I came back home and were invited to attend the opening of a gallery exhibition. After the ribbon cutting, we walked hand in hand into the gallery."There are even more people here than I expected."Cedric smiled. "Nervous?""After three years of events bigger than this, please."Cedric leaned in and kissed my cheek before I could react. "That's my girl."I pushed his face away, laughing. "Quit being cute."His smile only deepened, and he nuzzled his cheek right into my palm. Heat rushed to my face, but I didn't pull my hand back, letting him stay.Over the years we'd supported each other through everything and had become one of the most talked-about pairs in the art world, professionally and personally. I pinched his cheek, overwhelmed by how far we'd come, in love and in our careers. It couldn't get more perfect than this.We strolled through the gallery, taking in the pieces, when a familiar voice came from behind me. "Maddie?"

Third-person POVA week had passed since Reid and Aria returned from their competition together."Maddie's competition ended, didn't it? How is she not back yet?""I'm not sure either. Let me text her."Reid hit send, but the message bounced back immediately, marked undeliverable. He stared at the message box, and something sharp stabbed through his chest. Aria noticed him frozen with his phone in his hand and asked casually, "Did she reply?"Reid tightened his grip on the phone, his voice completely flat. "She blocked me."Aria's hands stilled. She pulled out her own phone and sent a message. She stared at her screen, and her breathing picked up. "She blocked me too."Aria blinked, still not processing it. Reid's brow furrowed, and he started walking toward the women's dorm in long, fast strides."Is this about the grad school thing? About not putting her name down? Is she that upset?"Aria hurried alongside him, her voice tight with urgency. "But you weren't wrong. Her part

Aria took Reid at his word and came to wait for me outside the dorm. I didn't like the way they did things, but I still had more patience for Aria."What did you need?"Aria was all smiles, chattering away in my ear. "I heard you came around and decided to go compete. That's great news! And the group project from last time? The professor loved our work and gave us a guaranteed spot in the graduate program!"I answered her question with one of my own. "Really? So, does that mean I got one too?"Aria faltered, her face twisting with discomfort. "Reid said the work you did was pretty basic, and your goals aren't really here anyway, so he didn't put your name down."But when you come back, we'll help you prepare for everything, and then you can just apply on your own. That way we all keep studying together!"I looked at Aria. She kept gesturing as she talked, saying things that were equal parts naive and cruel, each one twisting deeper."You took my name off, cost me a guaranteed sp
