Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Many Floaters
"We've decided to adopt Julia as our daughter," Dad announced as he looked around the table.

The room fell silent instantly. I could see our relatives exchanging bewildered glances with each other.

Mom then said, "Julia is a very thoughtful child. She's always by our side, serving us and taking care of all our needs, doing the laundry, the cooking, and the cleaning—she's more attentive than our own daughter."

At that, my relatives instinctively turned to look at me. I gripped my knife and fork, remaining silent.

Dad just shot me a sideways glance, his tone turning serious. "Julia is unlike some people, who are nowhere to be seen all year round, only coming home to talk about money without caring about us at all.

"We asked her to quit her job and come back to take care of us, but she refused. We asked her to go on a blind date and settle down, and she refused that as well.

"She's all grown-up now, after all. She doesn't care the least bit about us old folks anymore."

Seeing this, Sonya immediately tried to smooth things over.

"But Uncle Randy, Aunt Marie, it's not that Genevieve is being unfilial or disrespectful to you. She's just really busy with work and under a lot of pressure. Please don't say such things about her."

Mom waved her hand dismissively, her face darkening. "Busy? She's always busy, isn't she? What's the point of earning more money anyway if she can't be there for us?

"But Julia is different. She's very caring, and she's always there for us when we're sick. She's far more reliable than our own daughter."

Dad became even more agitated, his voice rising as he spoke. "Since we can't rely on our own daughter, then we'll just find someone else more caring to take her place!

"If Julia can take care of us in our old age and see us off in our final days, I don't see why we shouldn't leave the house and assets to her!"

Everyone in the room was completely stunned. They stared at each other in shock, not daring to breathe even too loudly.

Some of them wanted to advise them against it, but they decided not to after seeing how resolute my parents seemed about it.

Dinner ended in a very awkward atmosphere.

Afterward, Sonya pulled me aside, her face full of concern.

"Genevieve! Did that Julia put a spell on your parents or something? How could they say that they'd leave the house to her!

"You should go back and talk to them properly. We can't let them continue making a huge mistake like this!"

I looked at Julia, who was chatting and laughing happily with my parents in the distance, and gently shook my head.

"Maybe all they want is just a sweet, obedient daughter who can always be by their side every single day. I can't be that person. And if they want someone else to be that for them, then there's no way I can stop them either."

The long weekend was coming to an end, and I needed to return to Berrington.

I called Dad before leaving, but he didn't pick up. I called Mom next, but my calls ended up being rejected.

I called them several more times, but I kept getting rejected each time.

I stared at my phone and decided to give up. I just dragged my suitcase with me to the train station and caught the train back to Berrington.

Over the next couple of weeks, I kept seeing my parents post updates about their daily lives.

There were photos of them going out to barbecue restaurants and posing intimately together and walking in the park with Julia's arms linked with Mom's as they smiled sweetly at each other.

Their captions were always about how warm and lovely their new life was as a "family" of three.

I scrolled through their posts, neither liking nor commenting on them. I just pretended not to have seen anything.

However, a few days later, a phone call suddenly came in. It was from Mom.

I'd only just answered the phone when I heard her disgruntled voice on the line at once.

"Why haven't you wired us the money for this month's living expenses, Genevieve Peterson? And why haven't you paid Julia her wages yet?"

Aside from hiking, I would also go camping with my friends, and we'd chat and sing under the stars as we enjoyed ourselves. We also went to plays and movies together and shared our joys and sorrows with each other. It made me feel incredibly happy and relaxed whenever I was with them.Around that time, someone also began pursuing me romantically. He was one of my business partners, and he was kind, mature, stable, gentle, and thoughtful. He knew about my past and understood my pain, and he never forced me to do the things that I didn't like. He respected me, my career, and my opinions, and he would always comfort me when I was down or tired, and help me when I encountered any difficulties. We got along very well. We didn't make any grand declarations of love to each other, but we kept each other company in a steady and ever-blossoming companionship.I knew then that this was the kind of relationship I wanted.Meanwhile, back in the village, my parents still lived in the empty hou

Mom and Dad thought of spending money on medical treatment, but they realized in horror that their retirement savings and pension were almost depleted. Julia had stolen quite a sum from them, and what remained was barely enough to cover their food, let alone medicine and other necessities. They lay on their cold bed, sick and miserable, but no one waited on them or brought them food or medicine. No one offered them any comfort, and they couldn't even get themselves a hot meal anymore. The house was empty and lifeless, filled only with the sound of their coughing and sighing. They glanced around in the empty house, looking at my childhood photos on the wall. They recalled the monthly allowance I used to give them on time, how I'd hired someone to wait on them hand and foot, and how I always bought them gifts and presents every time I came home. I'd talk to them, chat with them, and eat with them, but now, there was nothing left except regrets.Mom lay in bed, sobbing and poundin

Just as Julia was about to continue rummaging through Mom and Dad's bedside tables for anything valuable, the neighbor across the street happened to take out the trash just then and saw the front door wide open. The house was in complete disarray, and she also saw a figure furtively rummaging through my parents' belongings, so she got suspicious at once. She quietly went into a corner, pulled out her phone, and called the police, quietly explaining the situation to the officers that someone had broken into the house. The police arrived quickly. They rushed into the house with body cameras on them, arresting Julia on the spot.Julia's face turned deathly pale when she saw the police and trembled violently. Her bag fell to the ground, scattering expensive cigars, alcohol, jewelry, and cash onto the floor. With so much evidence against her, resistance was futile. There was no denying it.The police questioned her on the spot. When Julia realized that there was no way she could worm h

Dad continued, "We've already kicked Julia out and changed the locks, and we're never letting her back in. Let's continue living happily as a family of three, okay?"I gently pulled my hand away. "No, thank you.""Jen!" Mom cried, her eyes reddening with anxiety. She grabbed my arm, refusing to let go. "That's your home too! How could you not go back? You're our only daughter. What will we do if you don't come back with us?""My home?" I scoffed sarcastically and a little sorrowfully. "What about when you changed the locks without telling me, gave my room to Julia, and kicked me out of the house, saying I wasn't your daughter anymore? Why didn't any of you think that it was still my home then?""I…" Mom was at a loss for words. Tears streamed down her face even more as she choked, "We only said that in the heat of the moment. You shouldn't take them to heart. Please, Jen? We were wrong. We really know that we were wrong."You're our only daughter. We still have to rely on you wh

My parents were at their wits' end, but there was nothing they could do about the situation. After all, they were the ones who had adopted Julia in the first place. If word got out, they would only be humiliating themselves. If my parents mentioned kicking Julia out, she would immediately throw a tantrum by rolling on the floor, crying and screaming at the top of her lungs. "You adopted me, didn't you? It's only natural for me to live in your home!"How dare you throw me out! If you do, I'll go around the neighborhood telling everyone you abuse your daughter! Then we'll see if you still have the nerve to continue living here!"My parents didn't know what to do anymore and could only sigh in frustration all day.Julia had turned the house into an absolute mess. There was trash everywhere, and meals were often just makeshift instant boxed meals thrown together. My parents lived like they were walking on eggshells every day, afraid of upsetting her and causing another huge scene. The

Not long after, Mom thought of wearing her gold bracelet when out visiting relatives. However, she couldn't find it even after searching through the entire wardrobe. She traced back her steps and realized that Julia was the only one who had gone through her wardrobe in the past. At once, my parents knew what had happened and confronted Julia at once."Julia! Did you take Marie's gold bracelet?" Dad demanded, pointing a trembling finger at Julia. His face was as dark as thunder, and his eyes were filled with anger and disappointment. He never thought that the "daughter" he'd trusted so much would actually steal from them.Julia didn't look the least bit concerned and stood there defiantly with her hands on her hips, feigning indifference."What gold bracelet? I don't know anything about it! Don't you go around accusing innocent people. I didn't touch any of your things. Maybe you just misplaced it or lost it accidentally.""There are only the three of us in this house. Who else wou
