Chapter 2

Author: Mini Min
When I got home, the front door was half open. I could faintly hear Stella complaining, "She wasn't even raised by us, so no wonder she has no manners. She wasn't lovable as a child, and now she's grown up to be useless. If I'd known this would happen, I never should have had her."

Julian tried to calm her down. "I'll tell her later that she's not allowed to come home unless she finds a job. She's not capable of much, but she still listens to us. Don't worry."

I froze where I stood. For a moment, I felt like a stranger who had walked into the wrong house. I didn't know what to do.

Just then, my phone suddenly rang.

They heard it and turned around.

Stella let out a scream and put a hand over her chest. "Why are you standing by the door like that? You scared me to death!"

Before I could say anything, she continued, "You've always been so sneaky. Ever since you were little."

I stood there in a daze.

I'd once heard my grandmother, Penelope Stevenson, say that my birth had been an accident.

Julian and Stella had been busy with work back then, so they didn't want a child. But Stella's health made an abortion too risky, so they had no choice but to have me.

I grew up with Penelope and only saw Julian and Stella once a year.

It wasn't until Penelope died when I was 15 that they brought me from the countryside to live with them in the city.

One winter, I went outside to take out the trash. When I came back, I couldn't get into the house.

It was 23 degrees below freezing outside, and I didn't have a key. I huddled in the hallway, trying to stop my teeth from chattering.

Julian and Stella didn't show up with Iris until after dark.

When I heard them talking to Iris in warm, gentle voices, I finally realized they'd gone out to the movies with her.

They had simply forgotten about me.

Stella didn't recognize me at first. She even screamed in fright.

Only after I showed my face did she scold me, "What are you doing hiding there? Don't sneak around like a thief!"

I explained in a trembling voice that I didn't have a key. Iris laughed at me. "Lydia, didn't you know our front door has fingerprint access?"

I really didn't know. Julian and Stella had forgotten to tell me.

Stella grabbed my stiff fingers and registered my fingerprints while scolding me. "Why didn't you just go wait at a neighbor's house? You're already this old. How can you be so stupid?"

I sniffed and carefully said, "My accent is different from everyone else's here. I was afraid I'd embarrass you."

Julian had already warned me not to talk much in public because I still had my country accent.

But when he heard what I said, his face immediately darkened. "Why can't you learn to adapt? You're so stupid."

Later, they sent me to a boarding school. I only came home for one afternoon each month.

I'd always gotten good grades. After graduation, I found a high-paying job, and Julian and Stella became more accepting of me.

"You should set a good example for Iris as her older sister."

"Don't waste the money you make. Save it. Buy a bigger house someday, and we'll all move in with you."

They said things like that all the time. After hearing it so many times, I started to believe I was just as important to this family as Iris was.

But now Stella was treating me like the stranger she'd forgotten outside the door, the same girl she'd once accused of sneaking around.

All because I'd told them I was unemployed.

I let out a strange little laugh.

Julian suddenly shot to his feet and pointed at me angrily. "Your mom and I are worried about you, and this is funny to you? You're almost 30 years old! Do you really expect us to keep supporting you?"

I said nothing. Instead, I looked at the shopping bags on the table.

The 500-dollar skincare set, the new gaming console, and the brand-new foldable phone that had already been opened were obviously for Iris.

This house was her safe place. It had never been mine.

When Stella saw my face darken, she waved her hand at me in disgust. "Transfer this month's household money to me, then go back to your apartment. I'm sick of looking at you."

I could have easily told them that I'd only been joking when I said I was unemployed. I could have made them stop treating me so coldly, just like before.

But I didn't move.

Before they could say anything, I quickly scrolled down. "These are the records of all the money I've transferred to my family."Every single transaction was clearly visible.I looked at Julian and Stella and asked, "You said you worked so hard to raise me. Then tell me, do you have any records showing how much you spent on me? How much money did you actually spend raising me?"Julian and Stella's faces stiffened. They looked like they were about to say something. But I didn't give them the chance.Instead, I pulled up the information I had learned from our old neighbors and relatives. "Iris said she found herself a rich boyfriend, but that's not what happened. She thought she was going to marry into a wealthy family, so she sold the apartment you bought for her. Then she spent the money on expensive gifts for that man, hoping his family would look up to her."Last month, she even bought him a 50,000-dollar watch. But it turns out he isn't from some rich family at all. His family owns

"Ms. Stevenson, headquarters wants you to come back tomorrow to explain the situation. Someone reported you for abandoning your parents."I put down the file in my hands and looked at her.Caroline handed me her phone. On the screen was a post that had just gone viral on a local forum. The person who posted it claimed that my parents had worked hard to raise me and pay for my education. But now that I had become successful, I had cut ties with my family over one small argument, moved to another city, and completely abandoned my elderly parents. There were also several photos attached to the post. They were screenshots showing that Julian and Stella had called me more than 100 times and sent dozens of messages asking to make peace, only to find that they could no longer reach me because I had blocked them.People were arguing all over the comment section."You make a six-figure salary, and this is the kind of person you've become? Looks like all that education was wasted on you.""Peopl

But I quickly stepped back and pulled away from her hand as if she were some terrifying monsters. "Don't touch me."I looked at the woman who had given birth to me but had never loved me and spoke slowly. "From now on, we're even. I have nothing to do with you anymore.""Caroline, let's go." I grabbed my suitcase and walked out without looking back. The moment the car door closed, the world suddenly felt quiet.Caroline glanced at me through the rearview mirror; her eyes filled with careful concern. "Ms. Stevenson, should we go straight to the airport?""Yes." I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.I was exhausted. But at the same time, I'd never felt so free. After arriving in my new city, I handled the transition at work as quickly as possible. My new job was more challenging than I'd expected, but it also made me feel more alive.I no longer had to worry about supporting Julian, Stella, or Iris. So, in my third month in the new city, I paid cash for a small, fully furnis

I laughed. "An apology? Does this look like an apology to you? "Are you apologizing for insulting me and throwing me out over the past two weeks, or are you apologizing for ignoring me and treating me differently for the past 30 years? "The only reason you're apologizing now is because you realized that your 'useless' unemployed daughter still has value. I can still give you money. You can still use me."Stella tried to defend herself. "That's not true. You misunderstood us."I gave a careless hum and pulled a thick stack of papers from my bag.I'd spent several nights going through everything and printing out the records. "Fine. Then let's sit down and add up all these 'misunderstandings' between us."I placed the stack of papers on the table. "For seven years, from the first year I started working until now, I've sent you 5,000 dollars every month for household expenses. That's 420,000 dollars over seven years."Every year, I also gave you an average of 30,000 dollars for Christmas

The living room fell completely silent. My relatives stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to say.Stella's face looked terrible. She wanted to say something, but when she met my cold gaze, the words died in her throat. After a while, she suddenly seemed to find the perfect excuse. Her tone softened, and she even sounded awkwardly sweet. "Lydia, getting promoted is such a big thing. Why didn't you tell us? You've always been the type to keep everything to yourself."Her expression became complicated, but there was also a hint of relief. "You're becoming the general manager of a branch, so you'll be managing quite a few people, right? Your salary must have gone up a lot too, hasn't it?"Here we go again.Just a few minutes ago, I was the daughter they'd thrown out of their home. Now that they saw I had money and a good position, I was suddenly their daughter again—the one they could brag about to other people."Yeah, why didn't you tell us about your promotion?" Iris said with a sweet

Caroline froze for a moment before instinctively looking at me.I nodded, giving her permission to speak. She was a capable assistant who knew me well, so she immediately remembered the joke I'd made at the party that day.She looked at my stiff, silent family behind me and seemed to understand what had happened. She politely introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Caroline Kavanagh, Ms. Stevenson's assistant. Ms. Stevenson will officially become the general manager of the group's East Coast branch next Monday. I came to pick her up early today and help her take care of some preparations before she takes over."Stella stared at her in disbelief. "General manager?"Caroline explained, "Yes. Ms. Stevenson is the youngest branch general manager in the entire group. Your daughter is incredibly talented. I'm sure the neighbors must be very proud of you."Stella looked at Caroline again to make sure she'd heard correctly. "So... she wasn't fired?"Julian's lips trembled. He looked completely stunned.C
