Chapter 3

Author: Mini Min
I could keep sending Julian and Stella 5,000 dollars every month. I could still come home for dinner every weekend. I could even save most of my income and buy the mansion they wanted, while continuing to help Iris with her expenses.

But this time, I didn't want to pretend they loved me anymore.

I waved my hand. "I'm unemployed now. How could I still have money to give you?"

Iris suddenly poked her head out of her room. "What? You're unemployed?"

I held out my hand. "Yes. I'm broke now, so please give me back the 3,000 dollars I transferred to you at the beginning of the month."

She immediately mumbled, "I already spent it all."

I let out a cold laugh. "You don't need to pay rent anymore now that you're not working. Why did you spend the money I gave you for rent?"

Julian's face grew darker. "You should be looking for a new job right now. Why are you making things difficult for Iris?"

Iris glanced at Julian and Stella before turning back to me.

She smiled and tilted her head. "Lydia, didn't you get severance pay when you were fired? Your position was so high. You should have gotten more than 100,000 dollars, right?"

Stella slapped her thigh and stood up. "That's perfect! Iris is still a little short on money to finish furnishing her apartment. Why don't you lend her some first?"

Lend?

They should have just told me to give Iris the money.

They'd been doing this ever since I was little.

Whether it was a pen given to me by a classmate, a scholarship from school, or a dress I'd bought with my own money, anything Iris liked would be "borrowed." And once she had it, it became hers forever.

If I showed even the slightest reluctance, they'd call me stingy.

I hadn't even said anything yet when Julian spoke up, "Once Iris has this money, she won't need to take out a loan. As her older sister, you should be more generous."

Iris smiled as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Lydia, you lost your job at the perfect time. I felt bad about asking Dad and Mom to help pay off my renovation loan. Luckily, I have such a good sister."

As she spoke, she walked toward me and reached for my hand.

I stepped back and avoided her. "No."

I looked around the room and spoke in a cold voice. "I didn't receive any severance pay, so I don't have money to give you."

As soon as I finished speaking, I pulled out my phone and opened my bank account. "Take a good look. Not a single penny was deposited."

While they were still frozen in shock, I walked straight toward my room. "I can't afford to rent my apartment anymore, so I'll be living here from today onward."

I shut the door behind me.

Iris cried out in shock from outside, while Julian and Stella angrily cursed at me.

Once inside, I looked at the piles of junk filling the room.

I'd lived at home during my senior-year internship because it was closer to the company.

But Iris would sometimes act sweet and complain to Stella. "Mommy, I have too many clothes. There's no room left in my bedroom. What am I supposed to do?"

Stella would laugh, put an arm around her, and look at me. "Since you've started working, why don't you move out? It'll be good practice for learning how to take care of yourself."

From then on, my bedroom became Iris's storage room.

Even when I came home for Christmas Eve dinner, I had to return to my rental apartment alone afterward.

I cleared the things off my bed and managed to get some sleep.

The next morning, I was washing up when Iris walked up behind me with a dark look on her face. "Lydia, how could you use my face cream? That stuff is expensive!"

I smiled. "Is it really worth 3,000 dollars?"

Besides, the rent money I'd given her was already more than 3,000 dollars.

During her years in college, she often asked me for spending money.

She'd bought fruit that cost more than 100 dollars, shoes that cost over 800 dollars, a tablet that cost more than 5,000 dollars, and a computer that cost over 10,000 dollars.

All those expenses had piled up until they felt like the dull ache in my heart, pressing so hard that I could barely breathe.

Julian and Stella heard us and came into the living room with dark faces.

"Lydia, don't push it! Why do you have to cause trouble the moment you come home? How can you treat Iris like this?"

I shrugged like I didn't care. Then I walked to the door and pulled a ten-dollar bill from Stella's wallet.

Before they could say anything, I quickly scrolled down. "These are the records of all the money I've transferred to my family."Every single transaction was clearly visible.I looked at Julian and Stella and asked, "You said you worked so hard to raise me. Then tell me, do you have any records showing how much you spent on me? How much money did you actually spend raising me?"Julian and Stella's faces stiffened. They looked like they were about to say something. But I didn't give them the chance.Instead, I pulled up the information I had learned from our old neighbors and relatives. "Iris said she found herself a rich boyfriend, but that's not what happened. She thought she was going to marry into a wealthy family, so she sold the apartment you bought for her. Then she spent the money on expensive gifts for that man, hoping his family would look up to her."Last month, she even bought him a 50,000-dollar watch. But it turns out he isn't from some rich family at all. His family owns

"Ms. Stevenson, headquarters wants you to come back tomorrow to explain the situation. Someone reported you for abandoning your parents."I put down the file in my hands and looked at her.Caroline handed me her phone. On the screen was a post that had just gone viral on a local forum. The person who posted it claimed that my parents had worked hard to raise me and pay for my education. But now that I had become successful, I had cut ties with my family over one small argument, moved to another city, and completely abandoned my elderly parents. There were also several photos attached to the post. They were screenshots showing that Julian and Stella had called me more than 100 times and sent dozens of messages asking to make peace, only to find that they could no longer reach me because I had blocked them.People were arguing all over the comment section."You make a six-figure salary, and this is the kind of person you've become? Looks like all that education was wasted on you.""Peopl

But I quickly stepped back and pulled away from her hand as if she were some terrifying monsters. "Don't touch me."I looked at the woman who had given birth to me but had never loved me and spoke slowly. "From now on, we're even. I have nothing to do with you anymore.""Caroline, let's go." I grabbed my suitcase and walked out without looking back. The moment the car door closed, the world suddenly felt quiet.Caroline glanced at me through the rearview mirror; her eyes filled with careful concern. "Ms. Stevenson, should we go straight to the airport?""Yes." I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.I was exhausted. But at the same time, I'd never felt so free. After arriving in my new city, I handled the transition at work as quickly as possible. My new job was more challenging than I'd expected, but it also made me feel more alive.I no longer had to worry about supporting Julian, Stella, or Iris. So, in my third month in the new city, I paid cash for a small, fully furnis

I laughed. "An apology? Does this look like an apology to you? "Are you apologizing for insulting me and throwing me out over the past two weeks, or are you apologizing for ignoring me and treating me differently for the past 30 years? "The only reason you're apologizing now is because you realized that your 'useless' unemployed daughter still has value. I can still give you money. You can still use me."Stella tried to defend herself. "That's not true. You misunderstood us."I gave a careless hum and pulled a thick stack of papers from my bag.I'd spent several nights going through everything and printing out the records. "Fine. Then let's sit down and add up all these 'misunderstandings' between us."I placed the stack of papers on the table. "For seven years, from the first year I started working until now, I've sent you 5,000 dollars every month for household expenses. That's 420,000 dollars over seven years."Every year, I also gave you an average of 30,000 dollars for Christmas

The living room fell completely silent. My relatives stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to say.Stella's face looked terrible. She wanted to say something, but when she met my cold gaze, the words died in her throat. After a while, she suddenly seemed to find the perfect excuse. Her tone softened, and she even sounded awkwardly sweet. "Lydia, getting promoted is such a big thing. Why didn't you tell us? You've always been the type to keep everything to yourself."Her expression became complicated, but there was also a hint of relief. "You're becoming the general manager of a branch, so you'll be managing quite a few people, right? Your salary must have gone up a lot too, hasn't it?"Here we go again.Just a few minutes ago, I was the daughter they'd thrown out of their home. Now that they saw I had money and a good position, I was suddenly their daughter again—the one they could brag about to other people."Yeah, why didn't you tell us about your promotion?" Iris said with a sweet

Caroline froze for a moment before instinctively looking at me.I nodded, giving her permission to speak. She was a capable assistant who knew me well, so she immediately remembered the joke I'd made at the party that day.She looked at my stiff, silent family behind me and seemed to understand what had happened. She politely introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Caroline Kavanagh, Ms. Stevenson's assistant. Ms. Stevenson will officially become the general manager of the group's East Coast branch next Monday. I came to pick her up early today and help her take care of some preparations before she takes over."Stella stared at her in disbelief. "General manager?"Caroline explained, "Yes. Ms. Stevenson is the youngest branch general manager in the entire group. Your daughter is incredibly talented. I'm sure the neighbors must be very proud of you."Stella looked at Caroline again to make sure she'd heard correctly. "So... she wasn't fired?"Julian's lips trembled. He looked completely stunned.C
