Chapter 4

Author: Mini Min
"Mom, I don't have any money for breakfast. Just give me this dollar so I can eat."

After I closed the door, Julian threw his travel mug at it.

I tilted my head back and laughed at myself.

So, Iris was allowed to do whatever she wanted, but I wasn't.

I should have realized a long time ago that this was never my home.

The main team at the new branch wasn't fully in place yet, so my boss generously let me take my vacation days.

For the next two weeks, I started copying Iris and asking my family for money every day.

"Mom, I found a dress I really like. Give me 2,000 dollars."

"Dad, my friend is getting married, and I need to buy a gift. Just give me 1,000 dollars."

But every time, they yelled at me.

"Lydia, you're so useless!"

"If you can't find a job, then just marry some man and let him support you. Just don't keep living with us."

"How could we have raised such a useless daughter?"

But I didn't care at all. I simply smiled and kept scrolling through my phone.

Iris posted another picture on social media. She had her arms around Julian and Stella as they stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of her new apartment, all three of them smiling happily.

Her caption read. "Dad and Mom came with me to decorate my new place. Thank you for making me so happy."

Julian and Stella both liked the post and commented. "So proud of our baby girl! She put so much time and effort into making her new house a home!"

I was unemployed just like Iris.

But she was their precious daughter. I was the daughter they were ashamed of.

Finally, they exploded after I ate the entire container of yogurt Julian and Stella had bought for Iris.

Several of my relatives were invited over. They surrounded me and started lecturing me.

Julian's sister, Aitana Stevenson, spoke first, "Lydia, I heard you've been sitting around at home without working lately. How can you do this? What if people find out? You'll embarrass the whole family."

Stella's sister, Deborah Vance, quickly agreed, "Exactly. Iris is still young. She can enjoy herself for a few more years. But you're different. You're already this old. If you still can't find a job, you should hurry up and get married. Let your husband support you instead of constantly coming back and spending your parents' money."

Stella curled her lips. "I really don't understand how she turned out like this."

I took a sip of water and smiled.

Julian suddenly slammed his hand on the table. "What are you smiling about? We're talking to you about something serious. Are you even listening?"

Iris pretended to comfort me, "Lydia, we're all talking about something serious here. You..."

I laughed until tears filled my eyes. "Family? I've been living with you for 15 years since I came home at 15. Have you ever celebrated my birthday even once? Do you even know what I'm allergic to? When Iris has nothing more than a cough, you rush her to the hospital in the middle of the night. But when I had a fever of 104 degrees, I had to go to the doctor by myself. Am I not your daughter too?"

I wiped away my tears and continued coldly. "Stop pretending."

Julian was so angry that he clutched his chest. Iris quickly rushed over to support him.

Stella pointed at me and screamed. "You've gone too far! Then get out! From now on, we'll pretend we never had you as a daughter! All the money and property in this family will belong to Iris. We're going to make a new will right now. Don't even dream about getting anything!"

Julian shouted angrily. "Get me some paper and a pen! I'm going to declare that she's no longer part of this family!"

I nodded. Then I turned around and went back to my room.

A few minutes later, I came out dragging a suitcase I'd already packed.

I picked up the crumpled document Julian had written and pulled open the front door without even looking back at them.

My assistant, Caroline Kavanagh, happened to be standing outside to pick me up. "Ms. Stevenson, I'm sorry. I was worried you wouldn't be able to carry all your luggage, so I took the liberty of coming upstairs to help you."

At that moment, someone dropped a glass. It shattered on the floor.

Stella screamed. "Ms. Stevenson? Isn't she unemployed?"

Before they could say anything, I quickly scrolled down. "These are the records of all the money I've transferred to my family."Every single transaction was clearly visible.I looked at Julian and Stella and asked, "You said you worked so hard to raise me. Then tell me, do you have any records showing how much you spent on me? How much money did you actually spend raising me?"Julian and Stella's faces stiffened. They looked like they were about to say something. But I didn't give them the chance.Instead, I pulled up the information I had learned from our old neighbors and relatives. "Iris said she found herself a rich boyfriend, but that's not what happened. She thought she was going to marry into a wealthy family, so she sold the apartment you bought for her. Then she spent the money on expensive gifts for that man, hoping his family would look up to her."Last month, she even bought him a 50,000-dollar watch. But it turns out he isn't from some rich family at all. His family owns

"Ms. Stevenson, headquarters wants you to come back tomorrow to explain the situation. Someone reported you for abandoning your parents."I put down the file in my hands and looked at her.Caroline handed me her phone. On the screen was a post that had just gone viral on a local forum. The person who posted it claimed that my parents had worked hard to raise me and pay for my education. But now that I had become successful, I had cut ties with my family over one small argument, moved to another city, and completely abandoned my elderly parents. There were also several photos attached to the post. They were screenshots showing that Julian and Stella had called me more than 100 times and sent dozens of messages asking to make peace, only to find that they could no longer reach me because I had blocked them.People were arguing all over the comment section."You make a six-figure salary, and this is the kind of person you've become? Looks like all that education was wasted on you.""Peopl

But I quickly stepped back and pulled away from her hand as if she were some terrifying monsters. "Don't touch me."I looked at the woman who had given birth to me but had never loved me and spoke slowly. "From now on, we're even. I have nothing to do with you anymore.""Caroline, let's go." I grabbed my suitcase and walked out without looking back. The moment the car door closed, the world suddenly felt quiet.Caroline glanced at me through the rearview mirror; her eyes filled with careful concern. "Ms. Stevenson, should we go straight to the airport?""Yes." I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.I was exhausted. But at the same time, I'd never felt so free. After arriving in my new city, I handled the transition at work as quickly as possible. My new job was more challenging than I'd expected, but it also made me feel more alive.I no longer had to worry about supporting Julian, Stella, or Iris. So, in my third month in the new city, I paid cash for a small, fully furnis

I laughed. "An apology? Does this look like an apology to you? "Are you apologizing for insulting me and throwing me out over the past two weeks, or are you apologizing for ignoring me and treating me differently for the past 30 years? "The only reason you're apologizing now is because you realized that your 'useless' unemployed daughter still has value. I can still give you money. You can still use me."Stella tried to defend herself. "That's not true. You misunderstood us."I gave a careless hum and pulled a thick stack of papers from my bag.I'd spent several nights going through everything and printing out the records. "Fine. Then let's sit down and add up all these 'misunderstandings' between us."I placed the stack of papers on the table. "For seven years, from the first year I started working until now, I've sent you 5,000 dollars every month for household expenses. That's 420,000 dollars over seven years."Every year, I also gave you an average of 30,000 dollars for Christmas

The living room fell completely silent. My relatives stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to say.Stella's face looked terrible. She wanted to say something, but when she met my cold gaze, the words died in her throat. After a while, she suddenly seemed to find the perfect excuse. Her tone softened, and she even sounded awkwardly sweet. "Lydia, getting promoted is such a big thing. Why didn't you tell us? You've always been the type to keep everything to yourself."Her expression became complicated, but there was also a hint of relief. "You're becoming the general manager of a branch, so you'll be managing quite a few people, right? Your salary must have gone up a lot too, hasn't it?"Here we go again.Just a few minutes ago, I was the daughter they'd thrown out of their home. Now that they saw I had money and a good position, I was suddenly their daughter again—the one they could brag about to other people."Yeah, why didn't you tell us about your promotion?" Iris said with a sweet

Caroline froze for a moment before instinctively looking at me.I nodded, giving her permission to speak. She was a capable assistant who knew me well, so she immediately remembered the joke I'd made at the party that day.She looked at my stiff, silent family behind me and seemed to understand what had happened. She politely introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Caroline Kavanagh, Ms. Stevenson's assistant. Ms. Stevenson will officially become the general manager of the group's East Coast branch next Monday. I came to pick her up early today and help her take care of some preparations before she takes over."Stella stared at her in disbelief. "General manager?"Caroline explained, "Yes. Ms. Stevenson is the youngest branch general manager in the entire group. Your daughter is incredibly talented. I'm sure the neighbors must be very proud of you."Stella looked at Caroline again to make sure she'd heard correctly. "So... she wasn't fired?"Julian's lips trembled. He looked completely stunned.C
