Chapter 3

Penulis: Eternity
After I settled into the guest room, my mother knocked.

"May I come in?" She sat by the window. "I know you loved your old room. Sophie staying there does not mean we think she is more important. The social worker just thought she needed continuity during the evaluation."

"I understand."

She had come ready for a fight. My calm threw her off. She looked around the room.

“We can redo this entire floor,” she said. “New furniture, a private bathroom, whatever you want. Honestly, Eva, you may end up with the better space.”

She knew I had chosen every piece in my old room with my grandmother. She still thought anything could be replaced if she spent enough money.

“No, thank you.”

Her mouth tightened. “Then don’t keep acting as if we took something from you when you’re refusing everything we offer.”

“I’m not acting like anything.”

She waited, as if she expected more. When I said nothing, she stood.

“Fine. But I’m not going to feel guilty when you’re the one choosing to be unhappy.”

After the door closed, laughter drifted up from downstairs. My father was telling Sophie about her new school. My mother was asking about uniform colors. They sounded like they had been a family for years.

In my previous life, I had waited for them to treat me that way. I would pick fights, then wait for them to come to me. I thought if I hurt enough, eventually they would understand. Now I knew they never would. The laughter still pulled at my chest.

I opened my laptop. Three months of missed classes. Instead of dissecting every sound from downstairs, I needed to figure out my coursework and college deadlines. I poured myself into school and stopped engaging with my parents and Sophie.

The next time my mother confronted me was Sophie's seventeenth birthday.

Sophie had told them her grandmother was poor, that she had never really celebrated birthdays. My mother threw her a dinner party with a private chef and photographer. She made a photo album documenting Sophie's new life.

That same day, social services approved the temporary guardianship. For my parents, the party was Sophie's official welcome.

I came home late from SAT prep. They were cutting the cake. Sophie sat between my parents, my mother's hand on her shoulder. When she saw me, her smile faded. She put down the cake, glanced at my mother.

My mother noticed. "Sophie? What is wrong?"

“Nothing. I just wasn’t sure Eva would want to see everyone celebrating the guardianship.”

My mother turned to me. “Did something happen at school?”

“No.”

Her expression hardened. “You always know how to make a room uncomfortable without saying a word.”

I almost laughed bitterly. “I just walked in.”

In my previous life, she would have assumed I’d bullied Sophie. This time, even my attempt to defend myself became evidence against me.

“I haven’t threatened her. I haven’t gossiped about her. I haven’t interfered with the guardianship. We’ve spoken twice at school in the last week.”

“You haven’t said anything cruel because you know we would call you out on it. So now you walk into a room, go cold, and make Sophie feel guilty for being here.”

Sophie sat with her head down, twisting her hands in her lap. She did not deny it.

“So even when I say nothing, you’ve already decided what I mean.”

“Silence can hurt too,” my mother said. “This is Sophie’s home now. She should not have to study your face every time you enter a room to know whether she’s allowed to feel welcome.”

“Her feeling safe cannot depend on me performing happiness for her.”

Sophie grabbed the coffee. Ethan caught her wrist. The cup tipped over, soaking the papers. Sophie lost control. "You are still protecting her?""I am protecting the negotiation documents!""You just said you wanted to start over with her!"Ethan hissed at her to keep her voice down. His restraint only made Sophie angrier. I called staff to clean the table and let the lawyers handle further communication."The final terms will not change because of your marital conflict." I looked at Ethan. "You will not stay in management. Sophie must accept an independent audit. If you refuse, the fund withdraws, and the banks handle the debt themselves."I stood and left. The acquisition closed successfully. The best hotels and the brand were preserved. Most employees kept their jobs. Ethan and Sophie lost their positions and faced lawsuits, tax audits, and related-party investigations. Their marriage ended quickly.Sophie called me once. "Eva, why did you have to destroy my life?""I did not destro

Due diligence showed the problems were worse than my parents had described.Several core hotels were still profitable. The brand and properties had value. What had brought the company down was management's expansion, related-party deals, and hidden debt. Our fund proposed a debt restructuring. The core hotels and most employees would be preserved. The condition was that all existing management had to leave, and existing shareholders would be heavily diluted.Ethan asked to meet me. We met in the hotel lobby coffee shop. I asked that Sophie also attend, but Ethan arrived twenty minutes early. He looked older, but his confidence was the same. "I knew you would come back eventually.""I am the project lead.""You can call it work." He leaned forward. "But you chose to handle Harrington personally. That means you never really let go of this place. Or me.""You are married to Sophie."Ethan spoke quickly. "She stayed with me after you left. But after we married, I saw who she really is. She

Harrington Group was in serious debt.Over the past few years, my father had handed operations to Ethan and put Sophie in charge of the foundation and brand division. Ethan had acquired multiple hotels and signed risky guarantees without proper authorization. Sophie's consulting firm had been billing the group's suppliers and foundation without providing corresponding services. The banks wanted additional collateral. Without new capital, the group would likely go bankrupt. My father looked at me. "Your fund is looking for US hotel assets. If you push your firm to invest, Harrington Group will survive.""I cannot ask the investment committee to fund a company that has not completed due diligence just because of personal ties.""You own twenty percent," my mother said. "You are not just helping us. You are protecting your own assets.""I will handle it as a shareholder. I will not use company money to bail out family."They had not expected me to refuse. My father's voice was tight. "You

My parents learned the school's conclusions. My mother called repeatedly, asking me to stop people from talking about Sophie."She just lost her grandmother. She is in a new school. Now everyone thinks she stole your relationship. She cannot handle it.""The school released findings. It was not personal.""You could tell people you and Ethan had problems anyway. You do not have to blame Sophie."I asked one question. "When anonymous accounts attacked me, did you worry it would affect my college applications?"Silence. Then, defensively: "You moved out. You did not tell us anything. How were we supposed to know?""You knew about the videos. You knew Sophie was hurt. You just did not think I deserved the same concern."She tried to explain. I hung up.For the rest of senior year, I did not let family drama affect me. Adrian and I won the national business case competition. I restored my GPA. At graduation, I received an acceptance from Wharton. Adrian went to Yale.At prom, he asked me f

Two days later, I ran into Ethan at the Starbucks near campus. He walked straight to me. "You have been coming here a lot.""I live nearby."He did not believe me. "If you are not over it, just say so. Do not manufacture meetings."I almost laughed. "You are blocking the counter."He did not move. "The more you pretend not to care, the more you want me to regret it. I will not come back because of these games.""I want coffee.""Stop comparing yourself to Sophie. She has never wanted to hurt you."Before I could answer, a voice behind me said, "If Eva still wants you, I will step away." Sophie had walked in. "I do not want you to lose everything because of us. If you need him, I will leave.""Sophie," Ethan said. "You do not have to do this.""I do not need you to step away. Ethan is not something to redistribute. He kissed you before ending things with me. You knew he was taken. You can be together, but stop pretending betrayal is love and my exit is your sacrifice."Her composure cra

The school held its annual charity gala.Sophie was invited as a student speaker because of Swapped Lives. She talked about the decline of West Virginia mining towns and the Harringtons taking her in after her grandmother died. She never mentioned me. The applause was long. My mother sat in the front row, beaming. The gala ended early. I went to get my laptop. Passing the side stairwell, I heard familiar voices.Sophie's back was to me, shoulders trembling. "Everyone thinks I took Eva's family. No matter what I do, she reminds me I do not belong."Ethan stood close. "You did not take anything. Catherine and Richard chose you. You do not owe Eva anything." He rested a hand on her shoulder. She did not move away. Then she kissed him. He froze, then kissed her back.I stepped into the light. "We need to talk."They both looked at me. Sophie stepped back. "Eva, I did not mean to..."Ethan moved in front of her. "This was my fault.""Yes, it was." I looked at him. "We are done."He stared.
