Chapter 2

Auteur: Pink Candy
Early the next morning I learned that even the storage room wouldn’t be mine.

At breakfast Lucas casually told Xavier that after I left they could tear down the wall of the storage room and expand a walk-in closet for Lydia.

“Her clothes will definitely keep increasing. One wardrobe won’t be enough.”

Xavier nodded while biting into his bread. “Okay. We’ll get someone to measure the dimensions later.”

Lydia held her cup and said softly, “There’s no need… I don’t have many clothes…”

Victor smiled and ruffled her hair.

“You have few now. Later we’ll take you shopping.”

I sat across from them drinking milk, saying nothing.

It was a good thing I was leaving soon.

Once I was gone, even the traces of me having lived here would be erased.

In the afternoon Xavier came back carrying two bags.

The large one held an exquisite jewelry box containing a moonstone necklace specially prepared for Omega wolves, said to help stabilize their aura.

He handed it to Lydia with both hands.

“Victor said you’ve been sleeping poorly lately. I bought this especially for you. Try it and see if it suits you.”

Lydia’s eyes lit up. She held the jewelry box, overjoyed.

The small bag was pushed in front of me.

I opened it and saw a pack of discounted fruit candies, still with a yellow promotional sticker on the packaging.

“I picked it up for you while I was at it. Don’t you like sweets?”

I didn’t like sweets.

I had told them this more than once.

I liked spicy food. Especially in winter, I loved a bowl of hot soup with lots of chili.

But what they remembered was always what Lydia liked.

“Xavier, I don’t eat candy.”

He shrugged.

“Fine. Then give it to Lydia. Don’t waste it.”

I put the candy on the table and turned back to the storage room.

The moment the door closed, I heard Lydia say softly, “Xavier, is Cecilia a little unhappy?”

Xavier didn’t reply.

Two seconds later came the sound of the jewelry box opening, and his low voice saying as he leaned closer, “This color really suits you.”

As long as I wasn’t in front of him, he could forget me with peace of mind and continue chatting and laughing with another girl.

This was more chilling than any argument.

In the evening, when I came out of the storage room to get water, I passed Xavier’s room and heard Victor and Lucas’s voices inside.

“Xavier, has Cecilia been a bit off lately? Since we moved in, she barely talks anymore.”

My footsteps stopped.

Xavier was silent for a moment, but his tone was casual.

“What could be wrong with her? She’s been like this since she was little—likes to carry everything herself. Don’t overthink it.”

Victor and Lucas said nothing more.

I stood outside the door, the hand holding the water glass steady, not a single drop spilled.

So it wasn’t that no one had noticed my change.

It was that even after noticing, they still thought it didn’t matter.

That night, while packing my luggage, I saw a furniture order on the living room table.

A custom wardrobe, dressing table, and brand-new mattress. The order amount wasn’t small, and the delivery address was exactly the apartment we were living in now.

The payer was Xavier.

Adding the sheets, curtains, and other supplies they had bought earlier, they had spent fifty thousand on furnishing Lydia’s bedroom.

And my storage room didn’t even have a proper bed.

Lying on the yoga mat at night, my phone suddenly lit up.

Frostwood Academy sent the final confirmation email.

【Cecilia, your transfer application has been approved. Please complete the registration procedures at the school as soon as possible within two days. The research institute project team has reserved a place for you. Specific arrangements will be coordinated directly with your supervisor.】

The supervisor had also attached a message.

【We are all waiting for you. Your research results are outstanding. There is a more suitable platform for you here. Come with peace of mind. We will arrange the subsequent matters.】

I read that message three times.

Someone felt my ability was worth cherishing, and someone was willing to carefully arrange my future.

It’s just that those people were not in Blackthorn Pack.

I turned off my phone and looked at the dim ceiling of the storage room.

The day after tomorrow was the time I would leave.

When Lydia told Xavier the news that I had returned, I had already spent one night in a hotel in Blackthorn Pack. When the phone rang, Xavier’s voice was extremely hoarse.“Cecilia… I’ll come pick you up. Where are you? Tell me where you are.”“No need to pick me up. I’ll go back tomorrow.”After hanging up, I sat by the hotel window watching the lights gradually come on outside.Five years.I had imagined the scene of setting foot on this land again many times, yet I had never thought that when I truly returned, my heart would be so calm. The next day I wore a blue windbreaker. It was one I had bought near Frostwood Academy. Blue—the color I had always liked. When I reached the apartment doorway, I found the door was not closed.Xavier stood in the entranceway. Dark circles filled the bottoms of his eyes. The once high-spirited Alpha heir now looked in poor spirits.Lucas and Victor stood in the living room. They both looked a little dazed. The moment they saw me, Lucas’s eyes instant

The fifth year. The key project of the Frostwood Academy Research Institute completed its final acceptance a year and a half ahead of schedule.I stood outside the gate of the research institute holding the backpack I had brought five years earlier. Back then the bag only held a few changes of clothes and a student ID. Now it held a laptop and three research achievement award certificates.Aiden parked the car next to me and rolled down the window.“Have you decided? You’re really not staying at the research institute?”“I’ve decided. I should go back and take a look.”“Then I’ll drive you to the airport.”The car drove along the mountain road for two hours. Outside the window were continuous snow-capped mountains and desolate woodland.Aiden talked nonstop the whole way. He said the lab colleagues would miss me, said the cactus I kept on the windowsill mustn’t be killed by the new researcher, and said that after I left, no one would know whom to entrust the core algorithms to.Toward

The days after Cecilia left cut into them like a dull knife, day after day.In the first month Xavier was still asking people everywhere for news of her whereabouts. In the third month he stopped making phone calls, because every channel gave the same reply: Frostwood Academy refused to disclose any information about Cecilia on the grounds of protecting student privacy. In the sixth month he began suffering from insomnia.Sometimes when he woke in the middle of the night, he would subconsciously release his mental power, trying to search for that familiar aura. But the only response was complete silence. He slept poorly every night. Occasionally he would walk to the doorway of the storage room and stand there for a while. The door was always left open.He forbade anyone from closing it.As if as long as the door stayed open, Cecilia might come back at any time.Lucas and Victor had also aged a great deal. One day at dinner Lucas suddenly put down his fork.“I went through all the group

After leaving Blackthorn Pack, I arrived at Frostwood Academy. The one who picked me up was the research institute supervisor’s assistant, a man wearing silver-rimmed glasses.“Cecilia? The professor talks about you every day. He says your ability is the most outstanding among all the students he’s taught.”I smiled and picked up my suitcase.“The professor is exaggerating.”“Just so you know, the conditions here aren’t great. You have to be prepared.”“It’s fine.”I looked toward the distant rows of laboratory buildings. The glass curtain walls reflected a faint light under the sun. Here there were spacious dormitories, bright windows, and the research project I had always wanted to join.It was so much better than that storage room where I could barely turn around.Life at the research institute was busy and fulfilling.I got up at seven in the morning and entered the laboratory on time at eight. During the day I organized data and adjusted models. In the evenings I discussed researc

They immediately turned around from the amusement park and raced home.In the car Xavier, Lucas, and Victor frantically started looking for me.Xavier first called the school. The administrator told him I had already completed the transfer procedures and left the original school.Lucas contacted my research supervisor, who only gave him a brief reply.“Cecilia has already joined the new research institution. The specific arrangements involve confidential matters and cannot be disclosed.”Victor then called the pack council, the school’s academic affairs office, and even the border patrol stations one by one.No one knew where I had gone. Finally Xavier demanded that the pack’s administrators issue a missing-person notice. The staff member in charge of registration looked at my transfer documents and shook his head.“Cecilia is already an adult. She voluntarily completed the transfer procedures and also finished the application to leave the pack. This does not qualify as a missing-perso

There was still Xavier’s things left to return. In the afternoon Xavier went out. His tablet was casually left on the sofa. When the screen lit up, I happened to pass by.A group message popped up.The group name was “Lydia and Her Three Knights.”I hadn’t planned to look.Until my name appeared on the screen.【Lucas: What’s been going on with Cecilia these past two days? She’s talking less?】【Victor: Probably throwing a tantrum again. Leave her alone for a couple of days and she’ll be fine.】【Xavier: Ignore her. She’s always had a sense of proportion. She won’t really do anything to herself.】Right after that, Lydia sent a message.【Lydia: Is it because I took her room? Why don’t I just move to the storage room…】【Xavier: Don’t talk nonsense. Your health is poor. How can you live in a place like that?】【Lucas: Exactly. We finally found you and brought you back. Of course we have to let you live comfortably.】【Victor: Later we’ll take you to the amusement park. You can play whatever yo
