Chapter 3

Penulis: Katerina
When I woke the next morning, I went straight back to the hospital.

I completed the final paperwork for the donation of my body and signed every form they placed in front of me.

By the time I returned to the Moretti estate, it was already late.

The house was filled with laughter.

My parents, Nico, and Adrian were inside. Wedding schedules, guest lists, and seating charts covered the long table while the hotel manager confirmed arrangements for the next day.

My mother sat beside Bianca, choosing champagne glasses for the reception.

Her eyes moved over my bloodless face, then dropped to the hospital tape still wrapped around my wrist.

For one brief second, she looked unsettled.

Then her expression hardened into disgust.

“Elena, are you still pretending to be terminally ill?”

She still told the housekeeper to bring me something warm, then turned back to the wedding schedule. She cared enough to make sure I ate; she simply did not believe I could actually be dying.

I took one sip and set it aside.

My father closed the wedding schedule.

“Elena, I know this is unfair. Once Bianca gets through tomorrow, I’ll arrange another wedding in Westchester. You can choose the estate, and we’ll make it larger.”

“All right.”

“If you don’t want the townhouse after someone else has lived there, I’ll buy you another.”

“All right.”

I agreed so quickly that both my parents paused. Usually, whenever they asked me to give something up, I asked why.

Tonight, I asked nothing, and the room relaxed.

Nico pushed a property file toward me.

“The Tribeca apartment is empty. I can transfer it to you tomorrow.”

“I don’t want it.”

“Still not enough compensation?”

“I won’t need it.”

His expression hardened.

“There you go again.”

“What?”

“Talking like you’re dying because you’re angry about the wedding.” He pushed the file closer. “Enough, Elena. Tomorrow is already difficult for Bianca. Stop making everyone feel guilty.”

I did not explain.

My mother opened a dark red jewelry case. Inside lay an antique Madonna brooch that had belonged to my grandmother. Moretti women traditionally pinned it inside their bridal bouquets.

My mother had once promised to fasten it to mine.

Now she placed it in Bianca’s palm.

“Wear this tomorrow.”

Bianca looked at me.

“Isn’t this Elena’s?”

“Only for one day. Elena can use it when she marries later.”

Later.

Bianca offered it toward me.

“If you’re upset, I don’t have to wear it.”

My mother immediately pressed her hand down.

“Today, you can have whatever you want.”

“Elena has her biological parents to love her. She isn’t going to miss one little brooch.”

I looked down at my wrist.

The skin was covered in needle marks and darkening bruises from the IVs.

Then I smiled.

“It suits her.”

Adrian moved into the seat beside me and took my hand.

“Let this go just this once,” he said. “After the wedding, I’ll do whatever you want.”

His hand was warm.

It reminded me of the boy who used to sit outside my bedroom whenever I was sick because he was afraid I would wake up alone.

The boy who once promised that no matter who entered our lives, he would never make me feel replaceable.

For one foolish moment, I thought that boy had come back.

A little hope returned despite everything.

“What about tonight? Can you stay with me?”

Before he answered, Bianca gripped the edge of the table.

“I can’t breathe.”

My mother rose at once. Nico pulled out her chair, my father called the estate doctor, and Adrian released my hand.

Within seconds, everyone surrounded her.

No one remembered my question.

I waited, then stood.

“Mom. Can we take a family picture tonight?”

“There’ll be photographers tomorrow. Everyone’s tired.”

“Just us.”

“Tomorrow, Elena.”

But tomorrow, the woman in the wedding dress between them would not be me.

My parents, Nico, and Adrian were still listed as my emergency contacts.

I crossed out their names one by one.

Then I wrote:

None.

And signed beneath it.

Elena Moretti.

  • They Gave My Wedding Away Before I Died   Chapter 9

Six months later, the body donation program ended.By the time the Moretti family received notice, I had already been buried in a small private cemetery in the Hudson Valley according to the instructions I left behind. There was no family procession, no guests, and no line of black Moretti cars.My headstone carried only my name and dates.Below them was one sentence:Elena Moretti. At last, she owes no one anything. My mother stood before it for a long time.During those six months, she had repeatedly tried to move me into the Moretti family cemetery. She asked the lawyers whether my final wishes could be changed. The answer was always the same.No.While I was alive, they had been accustomed to making decisions for me.In death, they finally had to accept mine.My father reopened the records from the attack sixteen years ago. This time, the official family archive clearly stated that ten-year-old Elena Moretti had saved Nico during the ambush.Carlo Ferraro’s name was not erased. He

Three days later, Thomas Hale brought the restored footage to the Moretti estate. The image was old and grainy, but it showed enough. When the first shots struck the convoy sixteen years earlier, ten-year-old Elena broke away from security and ran back toward the vehicles. She dragged the injured Nico behind an armored car and pressed her own coat against his wound until the guards reached them.By the time Carlo Ferraro appeared, Nico was already safe.As everyone prepared to retreat, young Bianca began crying that a medal her mother had left her was still inside the first car.Carlo stopped. The guards tried to hold him back, but he turned and ran into the line of fire.Less than half a minute later, he collapsed beside the vehicle. The footage ended. No one in the room spoke. The Morettis did owe Carlo something. But he had never taken a bullet for Nico. The person who had pulled Nico out of the gunfire had been Elena all along. My father sat at the end of the long table without mov

Bianca arrived at the hospital still wearing my wedding gown. The hem was stained from the day, and my grandmother’s Madonna brooch was still pinned inside the ribbon of her bouquet. The moment my mother saw it, her expression changed. She crossed the corridor and removed it.“Take off the dress.”Bianca froze.“Francesca…”“It belonged to Elena.”My mother closed her fingers around the brooch.“The gown was hers. The wedding was hers. The townhouse was hers.”Her voice began to shake.“How much did we take from her and give to you?”Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.“I never forced any of you to give me those things.”No one denied it.Because she was right. Most of the time, Bianca did not even need to ask.She only had to look hurt, and someone would turn to me.Elena is stronger.Elena has plenty of time.Elena will understand. My mother covered her face. That was the worst part.Bianca had used their guilt, but the people who kept taking things from me had been my own family.Nico

When the staff arrived to transfer my body for donation, my mother finally lost control. She stepped in front of the gurney and gripped the rail.“Where are you taking my daughter?”The doctor stopped.“Miss Moretti signed a valid body donation agreement before her death.”“I don’t agree.”Her voice shook.“I’m her mother. She told me everything growing up. She would never make a decision like this without me.”After a moment, the doctor handed her a sealed bag containing my belongings.Inside were my phone, keys, medication, and the black velvet envelope she had given me that morning. The hotel documents were untouched. On the back, I had written:Mom, I don’t need another replacement. My mother went silent. She had seen how pale I looked that morning. She knew I had been to the hospital twice.Yet what worried her most was whether I might appear at the wedding and make Bianca feel guilty.Nico stood against the wall and picked up my phone. The password was still his birthday. He unlo

Then he said,“That’s impossible.”His fingers tightened around the phone.“She just called me.”“Miss Elena. She died at 11:40 this morning.”The color drained from Adrian’s face. The officiant remained on the platform with the ring, but Adrian seemed unable to hear anything. His hand tightened around the phone.Adrian knew exactly when that was.I had called shortly before then and told him I did not think I could wait for him to come home.He had told me to stop using that kind of threat to make him leave the wedding.Bianca caught his sleeve.“Adrian, what happened?”He turned toward her slowly.“Elena is dead.”The hall fell silent. My mother’s expression froze.“No.”She shook her head.“Elena was fine yesterday. She was angry about the wedding. She kept saying those things because...”Her voice stopped. The words they had dismissed returned one by one.If I were dying, would any of you miss me?What if I don’t make it to our wedding? What if there’s something that can’t wait unt

  • They Gave My Wedding Away Before I Died   Chapter 4

I woke on the morning of the wedding to voices downstairs. The Moretti estate had been busy since dawn. Drivers checked the order of the motorcade, security reviewed the guest list, and staff carried flowers and gift boxes through the hall.Adrian was already dressed when I came downstairs. The dark suit was the one we had chosen together months ago, and he wore the cuff links I had given him for our engagement. He looked up and saw me.For a moment, I thought he might come over and ask why I had never waited for him last night. Then Bianca called from the dressing room.“Adrian, can you help me with my veil?”He glanced at me. “Give me a minute.”Then he went to her.My mother found me soon afterward and handed me a black velvet envelope.“There will be a lot of guests today, and you’re not feeling well. Stay at the estate and rest.”She adjusted the collar of my robe with the same familiar gesture she had used when I was a child.“If something happens to you during the ceremony, Bian
