Chapter 2

Golden Cicada
In the video, Mom slapped me, sending my head to one side. My cheek instantly swelled, and some color returned to my previously pale face.

When Nick was brought home back then, Mom and Dad found out he had a heart condition, so they were prepared to drain the entire family fortune to get him a heart transplant.

When I found out what they were up to, I did everything I could to stop them.

"Mom, I've been your son for the past 20 years. If you spend all your money on his surgery, how am I supposed to live comfortably in the future?" I shrieked at the top of my lungs, knocking everything off the table onto the floor.

I looked at Dad, but he kept Nick behind him, comforting him softly. He didn't even look at me.

That day, I left home and signed the agreement to cut ties with Mom and Dad. No one noticed that my retreating figure trembled slightly as I walked away in the video or that I was much thinner than before.

The scene shifted to me arriving at a press conference Dad had organized. The reporters shoved their microphones in his face, firing one sharp question after another.

I was wrapped up completely, standing quietly in a corner as I looked at Dad.

At that time, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. Dad had always cared about his appearance, but he no longer looked as polished as he usually did.

Perhaps Dad sensed that I was there, and he turned to look at me through the sea of reporters.

I quickly lowered my head and disappeared into the crowd, my heart racing violently. Before I could even calm down, I felt a warm hand grab my wrist.

"I thought you already severed ties with me. Why did you come looking for me?"

Dad furrowed his brow. When he saw me, the exhaustion on his face seemed to ease slightly. As he took a closer look at me, he froze slightly in shock.

After all, I looked absolutely terrible at that time. My hair had thinned a lot. If it weren't for my oversized hat, others would have noticed my balding crown.

I quickly pulled the brim of my hat down and slapped Dad's hand away, my voice rising without meaning to.

"I'm here for your money, of course! Your company's going under soon. Why shouldn't I take the chance to squeeze you dry?" I let out a vicious laugh on purpose.

My gaze swept past Dad and fell on Nick, who was rushing toward him from behind.

"I already told you this guy is a jinx. You shouldn't have brought him back. And now you know I'm right."

At my words, the last flicker of hope on Dad's face faded away, replaced with utter disgust and disappointment.

"All these years, I really raised you for nothing. As expected, you're not my biological son. No matter what I do, you'll always be an ungrateful bastard. Compared to my actual son, Nick, you're worlds apart!"

Dad's words made me feel like I was being ripped apart alive. My heart ached, but I gave nothing away.

Nick ran over and held Dad's hand. "Dad, why did you rush off stage without saying a word? The reporters are now picking apart every mistake you made…"

Hearing that, Dad took a deep breath and stepped away from me, his gaze on me as cold as ice.

"All those 20 years I spent raising you were for nothing. Nathan, you're so ungrateful. You'll get what's coming to you soon!"

With that, Dad turned and walked away without looking back at me. Nick held onto Dad's arm and walked beside him, just like I used to do before.

I let out a bitter laugh and lowered my head, my vision growing blurry. Then I looked in the direction Dad walked off in and muttered to myself. "Dad, I already got what was coming to me."

The second video ended there.

While the video was playing, the crowd had fallen silent. Now that it was over, they started condemning me even louder.

"How could Nathan be so vicious? Forget that he tried to stop Nick from getting his surgery just so he could live comfortably. He even showed up to mock his father when he was at his lowest point in life. Even after 20 years, Nathan felt nothing at all? He's so heartless!"

"Did you guys notice he looked unwell? In several parts of the video, he seemed even paler than before. His eyes were so sunken too. Anyone would think he could drop dead at any second."

"He probably just put on some makeup to make himself look sick and gain sympathy. It's not like he's never done this before. He kept acting weaker and weaker just to compete with Nick for their parents' love. In reality? No one even cared."

The crowd sneered at my body after it fell from the top of the building. There wasn't a hint of pity in their eyes.

Even Dad seemed indifferent to everything. After watching the scenes of us from the past, all he felt was disgust. He probably despised me to the core.

With a bitter smile, I looked at my body, now unrecognizable after the fall.

By then, the police had already secured the scene.

A forensic examiner stepped forward to examine my body, his expression grave. As soon as he looked at me, he suddenly gasped. "The deceased has no heart!"

At those words, the third video began playing on the large screen.

"I never thought something like this would ever happen to me. Nathan's always been so healthy. He even went for regular medical checkups every year. "How could he be diagnosed with kidney failure just like that? I even thought of donating one of my kidneys to him, but we weren't a match. "We couldn't even find a suitable donor in time, and his chances of survival kept dwindling more and more…"Jenna was so choked up that she could barely speak. She had always been a strong woman, yet tears kept streaming down her face.Mom stepped forward and patted her shoulder. "Oh, Jenna. No one wanted this to happen. At this point, lamenting over it won't change anything. All we can do is carry on with Nathan in our hearts. That way, he can rest in peace."Dad stood nearby, staring at my coffin in a daze like a lifeless puppet. His gaze was unsettling. Not wanting to see Dad like this, Mom sighed before leading him back into the house. Once she was gone, he was the only one at home. He wal

"Nick, I didn't actually mean all the things I said to you back then. I hope you won't take it to heart. You, Mom, and Dad are amazing people. I hope you'll have a good life together."Toward the end of the video, I had already broken down in tears. Even the onlookers were covering their faces, sobbing nonstop.By then, Mom and Dad were already holding each other, crying so hard that they could barely breathe. Nick stood next to them, holding their hands and staring tearfully at the screen. Nick muttered, "I'd never hold it against you. Why would I ever do that? We were accidentally switched at birth, but over the past 20 years, you've been so good to Mom and Dad, and I'm really grateful for that. Why would I ever hold it against you?"The people who had been watching the drama covered their faces too. "Back then, I was the one who cursed Nathan the most. I really couldn't understand how anyone could be so ungrateful. "His parents had raised him for over 20 years, yet he ins

"You only came to us after Nate died. I refuse to believe you didn't know where he was all this time, yet you just let him die like that. "Now that he's dead, you've come here asking us for compensation? Aren't you shameless?" My biological parents remained unfazed. "Don't bring up all that nonsense just to change the subject. That's completely irrelevant. You took our son away for 20 years. "Back then, after we had him, the nurse couldn't find him at all. We lived without our son for 20 years. "Shouldn't you compensate us for that? Your family's really wealthy, so what's a million dollars to you? We don't even have our son anymore."If we don't have money to fall back on, who's going to look after us? I don't care. No matter what, you're paying us today!"With that, they threw themselves on the ground and started making a scene. Some of the onlookers recognized my biological parents. Whenever I saw Nick like that, I felt an overwhelming sense of guilt, but I had no choice. Now that Nick had received my heart, I could finally atone for everything I had done to him. The police already had the scene under control, and my body had been taken away. After receiving the news, Mom and Nick sped all the way back here. Seeing that Dad was on the verge of a breakdown, Mom came to comfort him, her eyes red. Nick also went over and leaned against Dad. "Honey, if Nate were still here, he wouldn't want to see you so devastated. He must've done all those things just to make us misunderstand him."Nate's a good kid. He wouldn't blame you, me, or Nick." At that point, Mom also broke down. She and Dad collapsed into each other's arms, sobbing. "Nate, how could you be so silly? Even if we weren't related, you'll always be our son. Why wouldn't we look after you when you were ill? "How could you be so foolish? You didn't even tell us anything…" Before Mom even finished speak

Dad screamed, "All of you, get over here right now! You were the one who cursed Nathan the most. My family won't let you get away with this!"At his words, several onlookers' expressions instantly turned ugly. "What Nathan did before did make us misunderstand him. We've already cursed him out. Now that your son is dead, you're only coming to settle scores afterward? What were you even doing earlier? What are you acting for now?" "Oh my. He's definitely overwhelmed after everything he went through today. If you ask me, it's for the best that Nathan's dead. "After all, Nathan lived the life of a wealthy heir before the Yeagers reunited with their biological son. Ever since Nathan fell ill and Nick came back, no one really saw Nathan as a Yeager anymore. "You had no idea. I have a friend who knew Nathan, and she told me he had been through a lot this year. The maids treat people differently depending on their status. The onlookers cursed even louder than before."How could Nathan be so disgusting? He pretended to be sick and tricked his dad into going over, yet he refused to let him in. He even said he was looking for his real father. How can someone be so cruel?""The Yeagers really wasted those years raising him. Where did this guy even come from? I'm glad he's dead. Later, I'm going to celebrate that the world is rid of a menace like him!"The crowd erupted into chaos. Some onlookers even started picking up trash and throwing it at my body.In an instant, the scene went out of control. With a frown, Dad stared at the chaos before him, his eyes showing no emotion.Just then, Jenna hopped out of her black Bentley. Seeing my body covered with trash, she screamed for them to stop."Get out of my way! Nathan had his heart taken out so Nick could be saved. He even jumped off the building today to save his dad's company. Since you don't know the truth, get lost!"At Jenna's words, Dad's eyes wi
