Chapter 3

Author: Peachy Peach
As soon as I entered the event hall, all the reporters approached me.

“You haven’t been seen in years. Everyone is really curious about how things stand between you, the biological son of the Xander family, and Cameron, the adopted one. Have you two made up yet?”

My mother shoved a piece of paper into my hand and commanded in a low voice. “Read it exactly as written.”

I lowered my head and glanced at the paper.

[I was never kidnapped. I wandered off back then because I was being playful. Cameron’s mother took me in out of kindness. She treated me very well, and I owe her everything. After I came home, I was so jealous of Cameron that I bullied him constantly. I honestly don’t even deserve to be called a person. The reason I stayed away all these years is that I’ve been reflecting on my actions.]

My father urged me, “Just read it already!”

“You want us to reconcile?”

I crumpled the paper before tearing it to shreds in front of everyone.

“Why would I make up with the son of a kidnapper who abused me?”

The entire hall fell silent. Even the camera flashes stopped for a moment.

I stared daggers at Cameron and gritted my teeth.

“How about you tell everyone yourself? Twenty years of stealing my life wasn’t enough for you. You also have to be a homewrecker too and steal both my wife and child?”

Everyone in the event hall gasped as they shifted their gaze to Cameron.

His face turned pale instantly. The next second, tears welled up in his eyes as he put on a wronged and pitiful expression that I knew too well.

“Jude, why do you have to slander me again?”

He took a marriage certificate out of his bag.

“I’m clearly Laurel’s legal husband. You’re the one who’s the homewrecker.”

My heart sank. I rushed over and snatched the paper. The marriage certificate clearly stated Laurel’s and Cameron’s names. So that was why I was never allowed to look at our certificate! Laurel kept me from seeing it by saying that such a precious thing should not be taken out of the safe.

My blood ran cold as I stiffly turned to look at her.

“Jude, a title doesn’t matter at all. As long as you know I love you, that’s enough. Come to think of it, you were the one who stole Cameron’s identity as the Xander family’s only son. We had to give him another identity so he could stand on his own two feet in Harbor City,” Laurel said matter-of-factly.

“I’m sorry, everyone. Please excuse us. Jude hasn’t been mentally well for years. He has delusions. Don’t take anything he says seriously.”

As soon as Maeve said these words, everyone looked at me in disgust.

“So he’s a psycho! I knew there was no way Ms. Jinks would be involved with a guy like that.”

A little boy suddenly rushed out from the crowd. He slammed his head into me and knocked me to the floor.

“You shameless, disgusting man! You’re not allowed to bully my dad!”

With just one look, I knew he was my Noah. My whole body trembled. I instinctively tried to hug him, but Maeve yanked me backwards.

Her fingernails dug deep into my arm.

“Jude, unlike you, Cameron has nothing. I’m not going to let you take his child away from him.”

My voice trembled as I said, “But he’s my son.”

Maeve’s expression darkened. She pulled out her phone to open a video and whispered to me, “Sure, the video was just staged with camera tricks by some people I hired. Guess what, though? If Laurel and the kid watched it, do you think they’d know it was fake? Would that kid still want a father like that?”

The images on the screen shook me so much that my vision went dark.

It was a video from three years ago. I had just returned home from carrying a corpse when a group of people dragged me into an alley to assault me. Even at the last moment when my dignity was completely shattered, I was still hoping that Maeve would come to save me.

I coughed up blood. Unable to hold back any longer, I screamed, “Do you have any idea that I was actually assaulted by those animals?!”

“Enough. Quit the act.” Maeve harshly said as she looked at me with an annoyed gaze.

“Those people were all actors I hired. They wouldn’t have dared to touch you, the only son in the Xander family, even if you paid them a hundred times over. You’re acting like this just to guilt us into sending Cameron away, aren’t you? I really don’t understand. Why can’t you just accept him?”

My chest heaved violently.

“Who exactly could not accept whom?” I said inwardly through gritted teeth.

The system’s countdown kept flashing in front of me.

[5 hours.]

“Forget it. No point in arguing. I will be free soon,” I thought.

Just then, someone viciously grabbed my hair. My scalp screamed with pain as strands were ripped out by the roots.

But my parents just stood there and stared at him as if they wanted to tear him apart. They had heard everything clearly in the study earlier. My mother broke down, covering her face, and collapsed to her knees.“This is all our fault. If we hadn’t been so greedy and wanted both sons with us, things wouldn’t have ended up like this.”My father stood to the side and slapped his own face repeatedly.“We were idiots. Why didn’t we believe Jude? Why did we believe whatever Cameron said?”They cried inconsolably. Noah had seen everything through the crack in the door. When he opened the door, his entire body was trembling. He cautiously approached Laurel.“Mom, is Jude... I mean, Dad... really dead?”Laurel turned and shoved him away. Her gaze was cold like a stranger’s.“Don’t you call him that. You called the man who ruined your father ‘Dad.’ You don’t deserve to be his child.”Noah was stunned.“I’m putting out a statement. From today on, you and I have no relationship.”Noa

As I followed Maeve into the house, the living room was completely silent. My parents sat on the couch, clutching my photo in their hands. Their eyes were red and swollen from crying. Their faces were ashen. They looked as if they had aged ten years overnight.Cameron immediately came forward to greet her. He was as attentive as ever. “Maeve, you’re back! I made you some food. You haven’t rested all night—”Before he could finish speaking, Maeve walked past him. She did not give him a single glance, as if he were invisible. He stood rooted in place, feeling stunned.Noah cautiously walked over. “Dad, don’t be sad—”Before he could finish, Cameron slapped him.Noah was caught off guard. Cameron looked angry, and his gaze was vicious. “Get lost, you brat!”Noah’s face turned pale with fear. He did not even dare to cry out loud. He turned and ran back to his room. After the study door was pushed open, Maeve saw that Laurel was already inside. Just as Maeve was about to l

Laurel and Maeve were soon forcibly separated and taken away by the police. The door to the holding cell slammed shut with a bang.Maeve sat on the floor with her back against the cold wall. She felt completely numb and emotionally dead. From the next cell, she could hear Laurel wailing and screaming all night long. Maeve closed her eyes. But her mind would not stop drifting back to the past. The first year I came home, she did not like me. Honestly, she was disgusted by me. She thought I was here to steal everything that should have been Cameron’s, so she tried to scare me off.But I was just too timid. If she raised her voice even a little, I would flinch.I would not even shut a door too loudly. I would always walk on eggshells and was afraid of bothering anyone. That made her feel like no matter what she did to me, she was the bad guy.Perhaps she felt pity towards me, or perhaps it was because we were blood-related. Either way, she slowly started to care about me.She

“Jude!”Maeve was the first to rush downstairs. Her steps were unsteady. She practically tumbled down.Laurel followed close behind. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, they both froze completely. There I was, lying on the ground. Most of my blood had dried up, and my body was twisted and fixed in place. My eyes, however, were still open as they stared emptily upward.Maeve’s face turned pale as her body stiffened. “No... this can’t be,” she murmured. The next second, Maeve lunged forward and dropped to her knees beside me.“Jude!” She reached out to hold me. Her movements were frantic and trembling.“Stop messing around! Get up! Do you hear me? Get up right now!”But my body was limp with no response. My head hung weakly to one side.Laurel knelt beside me. She was practically shouting, “Call 911! Call 911!“Don’t scare me, Jude. Please, don’t scare me like this!”My parents then came stumbling down as well. The two of them leaned on each other. They could bare

Maeve rushed to the door and ran downstairs. At the same moment, I fell from the upper floor and crashed heavily onto the ground.I landed with a loud thud. The crack of bones was lost in the dull thud of the impact. My arm twisted, and my head tilted to one side. Blood quickly pooled around me.The next second, my body felt light. I floated next to Maeve.“Maeve, don’t go down there!” Cameron said as he grabbed her arm.“Isn’t there an inflatable bounce pad from the event a few days ago downstairs? Jude is just trying to scare us,” he said confidently.Noah chimed in with a contemptuous expression, “Aunt Maeve, I was just playing down there a minute ago. No one would die from that fall. Jude did it on purpose. He just wants to trick you into getting all worked up.”I looked at Noah. My heart felt empty. He had not gone down to play at all today. He was lying for his beloved father, Cameron. When Laurel was pregnant with him, I had imagined what he would be like countless tim

“You filthy homewrecker!”Someone in the crowd threw the first insult. Then, it was like a fuse had been lit. All the men who had been cheated on rushed forward. Their punches were quick to split the corner of my mouth open.Maeve panicked. Just as she was about to help me, Cameron clutched his chest and fell to the floor. “Maeve, there are too many people in here! I can’t breathe.”His words caught everyone’s attention. My parents panicked. “Sweetheart, don’t scare us. You two, hurry up and help Cameron get out of here!”Laurel glanced at me before looking at Cameron, who was crying and trembling. She clenched her fist and said, “Jude, these people are just pitiful. They’re only taking their anger out on you right now. You’re going to be fine.”She then ran toward Cameron.Maeve hesitated for a moment. Then, she bent down, helped Cameron up, turned around, and left. The next second, the punches and kicks landed even harder on me.“You piece of garbage! Did you sleep with
