I brought the soup back to the bridal suite and sat with my parents for a long time.

Even after the soup went cold, we heard nothing from outside.

After my mother urged me for the 13th time to go check what was happening, the door opened.

Enzo came in with a well-dressed couple behind him.

"Nora, these are Chiara's parents. They will take your parents' seats at the ceremony today."

The color drained from my mother's face.

Enzo softened his voice slightly, as though trying to calm me. "Nora, this is for your own good. With a respectable and influential family standing behind you, no one will look down on you."

My mother's hands were clenched into fists, her knuckles white.

But when she heard that, her fingers slowly loosened.

She forced a smile at me, then reached for Chiara's mother's hand.

"Thank you for stepping in..."

Chiara's mother recoiled as if she had touched something filthy.

"Lowborn trash! Who gave you permission to touch me?"

My mother lost her footing, stumbled back two steps, and fell hard onto the floor.

Enzo had someone bring over a towel, then handed it to Chiara's mother.

She took it and wiped her fingers one by one.

My mother's hair had come loose and her clothes were dirty, yet no one spared her a glance.

She had made a special appointment to have her hair done and had barely let her head touch a pillow for days, afraid of ruining it.

She had spent more than half a year's wages on that dress, then spent several afternoons agonizing over the design.

She had done everything she could.

Yet beside Chiara's well-dressed parents and their circle of bodyguards, she still looked as though she did not belong.

My mother held back her tears and gave me a weak smile.

"Nora, if only we weren't ordinary people. If we had their kind of status, you wouldn't have had to endure all those tests."

I bit down hard on my lip and shook my head desperately.

The truth was, Chiara's background was even more humble than mine.

A year ago, her parents were still living in a slum, struggling to put food on the table.

Enzo had chosen Chiara as his assistant and brought her parents into the Family along with her.

He gave them new identities, a new house, and even hired someone to teach them how to speak and behave.

I had once asked him, full of hope, whether he could give my parents new identities too.

Enzo frowned and refused. "Are you asking me to deceive the advisor? If I did that, how would I be fit to be the next Don?"

Later, my mother had a heart attack. I asked whether he could help us find a doctor. We would cover the cost ourselves.

Enzo's face hardened at once.

"Nora, that's against the rules. Too many people are watching me. You should understand."

My mother worried that she was making things difficult for me, so she ended up comforting me instead. "It's all right. It isn't serious. Don't let it come between the two of you."

A week earlier, when Chiara's mother wanted a cosmetic procedure, Enzo had called in the best doctor available.

He even waited outside the door himself, saying he was afraid she would come out and find no one there.

The night my mother's surgery nearly went wrong, I broke down and demanded to know why Chiara's parents were allowed to ignore the rules.

After a long silence, Enzo answered, "You are my wife, the one who will stand beside me. You have to follow the rules because you represent me. Chiara doesn't. She is only an assistant."

I was the one who was supposed to become his wife, yet somehow that meant my parents had to obey more rules and endure even more humiliation.

Before today, he had only refused to help my mother get medical care.

Now, my parents were being hurt right in front of me, and he was letting it happen.

I was done trying to become his wife.

Hugo messaged me again.

"Ms. Sutton, I hope to see some sincerity from you at today's wedding."

This time, I answered without hesitation, "Of course."

Enzo had lost his mind. Lately, he had been looking for me everywhere. He bombarded me with calls and texts, often from numbers I didn't recognize.I changed my number three times, and somehow, he found the new one within hours every time.He tried everything to get me to pick up.He even stationed men across the street from my parents' home. They never approached, but they never left.I ignored him at first.Eventually, I realized there was no reason to keep avoiding him.I had truly moved on.The moment I finally answered, Enzo's frantic voice came through the phone: "Nora, listen to me! I know everything now. Chiara went behind my back. She lied to me! I had no idea what that bitch had put you through all those years."I listened quietly. For three years, those were the words I'd desperately wanted to hear. Now, they meant nothing to me."And?"Enzo fell silent."I made Chiara pay for everything she did to you. A thousand times over. Nora, come back. Whatever the Borrelli family off

I had Hugo lock all three suspects in a room together for two hours. No one told them why they were there. All they had was silence and each other to suspect. When the time was up, I opened the door and handed each man a glass of water."Thirsty?"Right in front of them, I poured some white powder into each glass."Newly developed truth serum. Drink it, then answer my questions. One of you is a traitor, and I already know who."I sat down and casually flipped through the file on the table."Want to confess, or should I name you? Confess now, and Don Borrelli might let you live. But if I have to name you..."I lowered my voice, letting my expression turn cold. "You know how Don Borrelli feels about traitors."The man nearest me slammed his glass down."Who the hell do you think you are? I was risking my life for the Family before you were even born. What gives you the right to question my loyalty?"I met his furious gaze with a calm smile."Of course I know you didn't betray the Family.

Is he threatening to kill himself? Or is he planning to take me down with him?Either way, I don't understand what he's trying to accomplish.Does Enzo really think I still love him enough to stop just because he's threatening his own life?I didn't even slow down. I climbed into the stretch Lincoln outside. As the window rolled up, chaos broke out inside the building.Marco's furious voice rang out: "Enzo! You're really willing to go this far for a woman?"The window closed, cutting off the noise. It was over.I closed my eyes and rested for a while. At my request, the convoy went straight to the hospital where they'd taken my mother. Her condition had stabilized, though she still needed to stay under observation. My father grabbed my hand, overwhelmed."Nora, we owe it to Mr. Borrelli. Otherwise, your mother... she might have..."I can't believe Enzo could be so cruel. If you'd married him, who knows what kind of hell you would've lived through?"My mother wiped away a tear and patte

Enzo never reached his gun.Several guns were already aimed at his head. Then several middle-aged men seated among the guests stood. They were minor allies who depended on the Valli family for business.Ambrose Ricci was the most powerful among them. He owned three shipping lines, and a third of the Valli family's freight moved through his company.Enzo stared at him in disbelief."Mr. Ricci, what are you doing? I thought we were allies—"Ambrose smiled broadly but didn't lower his gun."Mr. Valli, we are. But before the wedding, some of us made a deal with Mr. Borrelli. If he could convince Ms. Sutton to join him, we'd back him."He lowered his gun slightly."I have no desire to make an enemy of you, but I won't stand by and let you harm Ms. Sutton."I took another step back until I was nearly off the dais.My skills were my greatest bargaining chip. They all knew what I'd done for the Valli family.Without Enzo holding me back, I could do far more for them.Murder flashed in Enzo's e

"And the groom, will you... What?"The priest's expression changed as soon as my answer registered.Enzo’s expression instantly darkened. His grip tightened around my hand, a strained smile appearing on his face."Forgive us. My bride is nervous. She misspoke. Nora, what did you just say? Say it again."At the doors, the guards quietly closed ranks, blocking every exit.Their hands slipped beneath their suit jackets, ready to draw their guns.Enzo squeezed harder. My wrist felt like it might snap. When I still said nothing, Enzo lowered his voice. He spoke through clenched teeth, "Say those words again, and this will no longer be a wedding. Don't forget your parents are still here."My mother's pale face flashed through my mind, followed by my father's helpless, cautious gaze.Enzo had spent all day telling me my parents didn't matter. Now he was threatening me with them.Suddenly, Enzo and his Family seemed pathetic.I'd let their ridiculous rules control me for three years. Enzo rushed in when he heard the commotion.I was already kneeling beside my mother. I grabbed Enzo's sleeve."My mother's having an asthma attack. Call an ambulance."He looked down at me and said in a low voice, "The Don is upstairs. We can't let word of any incident in this building get out today."My mother clutched my fingers, her palm cold and clammy."I'm all right. You've waited so long for this wedding."I shook my head through my tears, my nails digging into my palms.Chiara cried out beside us.A rose thorn had left a tiny scratch on her hand.Enzo's expression changed at once."Get the medical team!"He took one step toward the door, then stopped. He looked back at me, hesitation flashing across his face.Perhaps my tears had finally gotten through to him.For once, Enzo actually explained himself. "Chiara is in charge of the tests. If something happens to her here, the advisor will blame you. The wedding might even be canceled. Have Diane hang on a little longer. I'll send
