I supported my mother as we slowly made our way toward the door.

Her injured foot slowed us down. Enzo caught up with us in just a few strides, frowning.

"Half the people in that ballroom are people my family wants to win over. Don't make a scene now."

Chiara looked my mother up and down. She scoffed, "If you don't want to leave, just say so. There's no need for this. Look, you're blocking the door."

Outside, a long line of confused guests stretched down the hall.

My mother went pale and instinctively stepped aside.

The sudden movement sent a jolt of pain through her injured foot, and she doubled over.

"Mom!"

My eyes burned as I rushed over and caught her.

While I was distracted, Chiara turned to my father.

She stuffed a dollar into his hand with a mocking smile.

"I remember you're worth ninety-nine cents, right? Keep the change as a tip and buy yourself something new. Well? Was that apology sincere enough for you?"

Someone among the guests snickered.

The laughter quickly spread through the room.

My father closed his hand around the bill and said nothing.

He was afraid of embarrassing me and even more afraid that making a scene would ruin the wedding I had looked forward to for so long.

"Chiara!" I shouted, raising my hand to slap her.

Enzo caught my wrist before I could, squeezing hard enough to hurt.

"Nora, don't let everyone see you lose control. You've endured three years of this. One more time won't hurt."

Behind him, two guards silently stepped forward, separating me from my parents.

My mother had not eaten that morning, and her blood sugar was already low. Her face had turned deathly pale.

Still, she looked at me and gently shook her head.

"Nora, let it go. You've come too far. Don't throw three years away because of me."

I stared at my mother's badly swollen ankle and said hoarsely, "Bring me a bowl of hot soup and a bag of ice first."

Enzo mistook my words for surrender, and his expression softened.

"That's more like it. You're going to be the Donna. Learn to carry yourself with dignity. Don't lose your temper over people who don't matter."

He had his men take my parents into the bridal suite.

My mother kept insisting she was fine, but once she lay down on the sofa, she couldn't even sit back up.

My father quickly wiped his eyes with his left hand, trying to hide his tears.

My eyes stung.

My father was an ordinary man, but he had never bowed his head to anyone.

Yet today, for the sake of my wedding, he swallowed his pride and forced a submissive smile.

Enzo turned to leave for the ballroom.

I blocked his way.

"Make Chiara and everyone who laughed just now apologize to my father."

Enzo stopped and looked at me as if I had just said something ridiculous.

"Do you understand what you're saying? This is our wedding. You're really going to fight me over them?"

A bitter ache spread through my chest.

"They're my parents. They matter."

Enzo looked into my eyes and said in a lower voice, "If an enemy used them to force you to act against the Family, would you still let your emotions control you? Nora, don't let me down."

I stared at his calm face, and my heart slowly turned cold.

Enzo had only ever cared about the outcome, never about what it cost to get there.

For three years, he had not cared how much those tests hurt me.

And today, he did not care that my father had been publicly humiliated or that my mother was injured.

But I did.

I knew my father had been too excited to sleep for several nights before this wedding. He had washed and pressed his clothes over and over, terrified of leaving a single crease.

My mother told everyone she met that her daughter was getting married and posted every detail of the wedding on Facebook.

Love wasn't the only reason I'd agreed to marry Enzo and endure all those tests.

I had also hoped that marrying him would give my parents some protection.

But now I realized he had never considered them as family.

My father discreetly took my hand and forced a smile.

"Nora, I'm all right. Don't worry."

Even now, he was more worried about me than himself.

I covered my mouth and choked back a sob.

My phone buzzed.

It was Hugo Borrelli, the Don of the Borrelli family.

Three months ago, I had won a cross-border commercial case for the Valli family.

That case involved three shipping lines, seven shell companies, and a trove of documents that could have bled the Valli family dry.

Hugo had sat in the public gallery that day without saying a word.

After the hearing, he handed me a business card.

"Ms. Sutton, your talents are wasted on the Valli family."

He approached me three times after that, raising his offer each time.

Not once was I tempted.

But when I read his message this time, I hesitated for the first time.

"Ms. Sutton, I saw everything that happened just now. I'll double my previous offer. In addition, I will guarantee your parents' safety."

I looked toward the bridal suite.

My mother's lips were still pale.

My father still had that crumpled bill in his hand.

I lowered my head and typed. My hands trembled, but this time, I didn't hesitate.

"I accept your terms."

Enzo had lost his mind. They never approached, but they never left.I ignored him at first.Eventually, I realized there was no reason to keep avoiding him.I had truly moved on.The moment I finally answered, Enzo's frantic voice came through the phone: "Nora, listen to me! I know everything now. Chiara went behind my back. She lied to me! I had no idea what that bitch had put you through all those years."I listened quietly. For three years, those were the words I'd desperately wanted to hear. Now, they meant nothing to me."And?"Enzo fell silent."I made Chiara pay for everything she did to you. A thousand times over. Nora, come back. Whatever the Borrelli family off

I had Hugo lock all three suspects in a room together for two hours. No one told them why they were there. All they had was silence and each other to suspect. When the time was up, I opened the door and handed each man a glass of water."Thirsty?"Right in front of them, I poured some white powder into each glass."Newly developed truth serum. Drink it, then answer my questions. One of you is a traitor, and I already know who."I sat down and casually flipped through the file on the table."Want to confess, or should I name you? Confess now, and Don Borrelli might let you live. But if I have to name you..."I lowered my voice, letting my expression turn cold. "You know how Don Borrelli feels about traitors."The man nearest me slammed his glass down."Who the hell do you think you are? I was risking my life for the Family before you were even born. What gives you the right to question my loyalty?"I met his furious gaze with a calm smile."Of course I know you didn't betray the Family.

Is he threatening to kill himself? Or is he planning to take me down with him?Either way, I don't understand what he's trying to accomplish.Does Enzo really think I still love him enough to stop just because he's threatening his own life?I didn't even slow down. I climbed into the stretch Lincoln outside. As the window rolled up, chaos broke out inside the building.Marco's furious voice rang out: "Enzo! You're really willing to go this far for a woman?"The window closed, cutting off the noise. It was over.I closed my eyes and rested for a while. At my request, the convoy went straight to the hospital where they'd taken my mother. Her condition had stabilized, though she still needed to stay under observation. My father grabbed my hand, overwhelmed."Nora, we owe it to Mr. Borrelli. Otherwise, your mother... she might have..."I can't believe Enzo could be so cruel. Enzo never reached his gun.Several guns were already aimed at his head. Then several middle-aged men seated among the guests stood. They were minor allies who depended on the Valli family for business.Ambrose Ricci was the most powerful among them. He owned three shipping lines, and a third of the Valli family's freight moved through his company.Enzo stared at him in disbelief."Mr. Ricci, what are you doing? I thought we were allies—"Ambrose smiled broadly but didn't lower his gun."Mr. Valli, we are. But before the wedding, some of us made a deal with Mr. Borrelli. If he could convince Ms. Sutton to join him, we'd back him."He lowered his gun slightly."I have no desire to make an enemy of you, but I won't stand by and let you harm Ms. Sutton."I took another step back until I was nearly off the dais.My skills were my greatest bargaining chip. They all knew what I'd done for the Valli family.Without Enzo holding me back, I could do far more for them.Murder flashed in Enzo's e

"And the groom, will you... What?"The priest's expression changed as soon as my answer registered.Enzo’s expression instantly darkened. His grip tightened around my hand, a strained smile appearing on his face."Forgive us. My bride is nervous. She misspoke. Nora, what did you just say? Say it again."At the doors, the guards quietly closed ranks, blocking every exit.Their hands slipped beneath their suit jackets, ready to draw their guns.Enzo squeezed harder. My wrist felt like it might snap. When I still said nothing, Enzo lowered his voice. He spoke through clenched teeth, "Say those words again, and this will no longer be a wedding. Don't forget your parents are still here."My mother's pale face flashed through my mind, followed by my father's helpless, cautious gaze.Enzo had spent all day telling me my parents didn't matter. Now he was threatening me with them.Suddenly, Enzo and his Family seemed pathetic.I'd let their ridiculous rules control me for three years. Enzo rushed in when he heard the commotion.I was already kneeling beside my mother. I grabbed Enzo's sleeve."My mother's having an asthma attack. Call an ambulance."He looked down at me and said in a low voice, "The Don is upstairs. We can't let word of any incident in this building get out today."My mother clutched my fingers, her palm cold and clammy."I'm all right. You've waited so long for this wedding."I shook my head through my tears, my nails digging into my palms.Chiara cried out beside us.A rose thorn had left a tiny scratch on her hand.Enzo's expression changed at once."Get the medical team!"He took one step toward the door, then stopped. He looked back at me, hesitation flashing across his face.Perhaps my tears had finally gotten through to him.For once, Enzo actually explained himself. "Chiara is in charge of the tests. If something happens to her here, the advisor will blame you. The wedding might even be canceled. Have Diane hang on a little longer. I'll send
