Chapter 3

Author: April Ridge
I froze and let out a self-deprecating chuckle. So, it was on the day of the Spring Hunt.

I had hunted a deer, which would be worth three points for our team. I had carried it back in high spirits, only to discover that no one was waiting at our rendezvous spot. There had been nothing there except a pile of prey carcasses beside the tree roots.

Exhausted, I had dragged the pile of carcasses along by myself. I had been afraid that I wouldn't make it back before the competition deadline, and I had also been afraid that abandoning the kill would leave our team with no points and land us in last place, causing us to become a laughingstock.

As it turned out, while I had been running around the forest to look for them like a headless chicken, they had been by the river helping Lily gather herbs. No wonder no matter how many times I had called out to them through our mind link in the forest, no one had answered me.

John finally recalled what happened. His hand froze in midair, and his expression stiffened slightly. "My bad. You weren't with us at the time. I was going to call you, but there were herbs everywhere by the river.

"Haven't you always hated the strange smell of herbs? We only happened upon the Moonlight Spring while gathering them."

Without saying a word, I looked him in the eye.

He reached out to pat my head, but I dodged his hand as well. "Are you mad? I'll take you to Moonlight Spring separately next time. How does that sound?"

Perhaps because I hadn't replied for so long, Lily called out my name directly in the group chat, though I paid her no mind.

John heard it as well. He patted me on the shoulder. "Why aren't you picking one, Monica? Is it really that hard to decide?"

He whispered in my ear, "Hurry up and pick one. If you don't, she'll definitely think you haven't forgiven her, and she won't be able to sleep well tonight."

I let out a derisive chuckle, refusing to give him what he wanted. "Either one is fine. Just pick whichever you want."

Lily complained that I was being far too perfunctory.

The following day, when we met by the river, the herb in Lily's basket was purifying grass.

Lily had chosen Jason. A flicker of disappointment crossed John's face.

Lily shooed the two of them ahead and took my hand as we lagged behind. "I knew you wouldn't actually hold it against me. After all, we're the best of friends in the whole wide world!"

I merely smiled.

The three of them had reported the Moonlight Spring to the pack the day they found it, and now, a line of pack members had already formed. There were plenty of injured werewolves, but the spring could only accommodate three people at a time.

Yet, when it was finally our turn, Jason and John suddenly got into a heated argument over who got to soak in the Moonlight Spring with Lily.

Jason argued, "You're Monica's brother. Of course you should soak with her!"

John dug his heels in and shot back, "Lily already chose the purifying grass you picked. To keep things fair, she should soak with me!"

The pack members waiting behind us were losing their patience. Some started grumbling, while others urged us to hurry.

"Are you getting in or not? Why don't you take this argument elsewhere and come back when you've made up your mind?"

"What's wrong with you guys? Can't the three of you just soak together? Is there really a need to argue over this?"

Jason and John retorted in unison, "Who would want to soak with him?"

Despite saying that, the three of them ended up squeezing into Moonlight Spring together, using the excuse that soaking alone would offer more space. Thus, John and Jason implicitly agreed to give me the chance to enjoy the spring on my own.

Lily turned around and looked at me envyingly. "I'm so jealous. In a while, you'll get to soak by yourself, while I have to squeeze in there with these two stinky wolves."

The she-wolf standing behind me couldn't help but whisper to her mate, "Is this what you call jealousy? This is nothing but blatant bragging. It makes me sick just watching her!

"You'd better pay attention. That's what a bitch looks like! If you still can't spot one next time, I'll beat some sense into you!"

I instinctively turned around to take a look at her. She looked a little embarrassed as she explained, "I was just joking. Please don't mind me."

I didn't fault her. After all, she was only telling the truth.

Long after I left, Jason remained rooted to the spot with his head lowered, lost in thought. Susan teased me, "I see you were hiding things from me, after all. You never told me you were betrothed.""Because he personally disavowed it a long time ago. I didn't think there was any need to bring it up again."When we were 16 years old, we went on a trip together. John and I had drawn lots to gather firewood together. When we returned, we happened to see Lily telling Jason to back off. "You belong to Monica. I'm a she-wolf with principles. I would never lay a finger on my friend's man."Jason had scoffed and flatly denied it, saying, "Nonsense. That was just something our parents joked about. Monica's mom has passed for so many years now. Who would still take that seriously?" To avoid making things awkward for ourselves, John and I had tacitly agreed never to bring it up again. Susan was silent for a moment before gently stroking my head with a sympathetic expression. …From

"To be honest, I genuinely don't have the habit of talking behind people's backs," Susan hurriedly explained. "But you're my friend, so I need to set a few things straight with you. "First of all, a real best friend wouldn't neglect you because of your foster brother or your childhood sweetheart. Secondly, a good she-wolf doesn't string two guys along at the same time. Lastly, I know you're probably going to say that perhaps she doesn't realize those two like her and simply sees them as ordinary friends."I was stumped because she did take the words right out of my mouth. Susan looked at me sympathetically. "Oh, please. Even a blockhead like you can tell what's going on. How could she, the one at the center of it all, not feel a thing? "Those messages she sent you about 'which one should I choose' were just her way of bragging in your face in a roundabout way. For all we know, the only reason she's leading those two morons on is that she hasn't managed to land someone better yet

After school that afternoon, Dad called me. "Monica, I have wonderful news! John's mother has come back for him! She told me she had been in no position to raise him back then, so she had no choice but to abandon him. "Now that she's capable of providing for him, she wants to bring him home and make up for all the years she missed. By the way, why didn't you tell him about your exchange program? He even reached out to me through his mind link today to ask about it." I waited for a beat before responding, "I did tell him. He probably just forgot." Ever since I was 17 years old, I'd been studying about the other packs in the Alliance. John once caught me reviewing the materials and offhandedly asked why I was still memorizing all that stuff if I'd already passed the written exam. I told him right then that I wanted to go on an exchange program to another pack in the Alliance. He had gone dead silent, seemingly deep in thought. From then on, every single time Lily came by to ask

Susan was a woman of her word. Early in the morning, two days later, she dragged me out to set off for the Temple of the Moon Goddess. On the way there, I was the one holding and checking the scrying map the entire time. Susan introduced me to some of the more prominent landmarks along the way. "Listen carefully. These are all the key landmarks for you to remember the route."On our way back, she folded up my scrying map. "Now, take me to the pack's bazaar."Even though I took a wrong turn three times while leading her, we still managed to arrive at the pack's bazaar in one piece."Not bad. You did so much better than I thought you would! Oh, you have no idea, but I once got lost five times while leading my brother. He was so angry that he called me an idiot!"We burst into laughter again. After returning to my tent, I lightly edited a photo we had taken by the shore. After getting Susan's permission, I posted it in the pack's group chat. …Jason only saw the photo I posted

Susan's aunt was a priestess of the Moon Goddess. When she was little, her aunt had often carried her to the Temple of the Moon Goddess. Susan must've grown tired of looking at the architecture inside the temple a long time ago. Had it not been for the sake of accompanying me, she wouldn't have bothered to make the trip.Susan smiled bashfully. "It's not like I'm going strictly for your sake. I happen to want to go, too."Noticing my puzzled expression, she burst out laughing, doubling over. "You don't actually think every pack's Temple of the Moon Goddess is exactly the same, do you? Our pack's Temple of the Moon Goddess is on the mountaintop and built with stone. "The one in this pack is at the foot of the mountain, so the building materials are bound to be different from ours. Besides, going to the Temple of the Moon Goddess with a friend and going there alone are completely different experiences!"We exchanged a look and burst out laughing until our sides ached. The distant

On my way to the other pack under the alliance, Dad reached out to me through his mind link. His voice came through at a hurried pace. He was likely on a run, patrolling the area surrounding the pack territory. "I can't see you off. Be careful out there on your own. Don't talk to strangers, and don't bring anyone home without thinking it through. If you need anything or there's something you want to eat, just mind-link me. I'll have someone bring it to you."My eyes misted over a little, and I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I know." He had already told me these several times the night before. "I'll mind-link you to let you know I made it safely once I get there."After wrapping up the conversation with Dad, I realized that Jason had sent yet another picture of the three of them into our small group chat of four, tagging me. Once again, the three of them were huddled close together.Lily, who was seated right in the middle, had taken the photo. "I deliberately left a spot fo
