Chapter 3

Author: Moonlit Spring
Before saying goodbye to the young woman, I gave her a sincere smile.

"I'll be publishing new work soon. You won't have to wait much longer."

Right then, heavy footsteps approached from behind. Pierre walked over with a deep frown, clearly irritated that I'd kept him waiting.

"What are you dawdling for? You didn't pick out any swimwear, and you didn't buy sunglasses either. Snap out of it. I promise I'll take you to Lake Tahoe next time, all right?"

With me, there was always a next time.

Charlotte, on the other hand, got whatever she wanted right away.

When she wanted the latest Chanel handbag, Pierre would scour the entire city and pay a hefty markup just to get it into her hands that very day.

But when I wanted the newest Nikon lens, he'd merely promised to ask a friend to help import it for me. I'd spent the following week eagerly waiting for the package, only to ask him about it and hear him casually admit that he'd forgotten.

To him, I had ceased to matter a long time ago.

Perhaps my expression betrayed too much of my disappointment, because his tone softened a little.

"Charlotte is your sister. Why do you always have to compete with her?"

I lowered my eyes and nodded, agreeing with him simply because I didn't have the energy to argue anymore. Satisfied with my response, he smiled and pulled me into a casual side-hug.

"Once we get to Lake Tahoe, I'll have my assistant book the best salon and makeup artist. I promise I'll make every one of your dreams come true and make you the most stunning bride in the world all over again."

Before I could respond, Charlotte and Byron emerged from the store, their arms overflowing with shopping bags. Both were practically out of breath.

"Let's go home," Charlotte announced cheerfully. "I think we bought out the whole store!"

Pierre immediately turned to her with an indulgent smile and reached out to take the bags from her hands.

By the time we reached the car, the skies had opened. Torrential rain poured down, splashing against the hem of my dress as we hurried toward the vehicle.

However, when I tried to get into the passenger seat, I found it completely buried beneath shopping bags. There wasn't even enough room to sit down.

As the rain hammered against the windows, Charlotte leaned forward and looked at me with feigned concern. "Doris, why don't you just take a cab home? There's no room left for you."

Byron slammed the car door shut with all his might while I was still standing beside it. The door caught my knuckles, sending a sharp, agonizing pain through my hand.

I jerked backward in shock, and in my haste, I lost my footing. The heel of my shoe slipped deep into the grate of a storm drain, leaving me struggling to free myself.

Pierre started to get out of the car, eager to check on me.

But Charlotte spoke up anxiously. "The rain's getting heavier by the minute. Driving in weather like this is dangerous!"

Pierre hesitated, then started the engine again. "Take care of yourself."

With that, they drove away into the storm.

I stood there, watching the car disappear through the sheets of rain. The heavy drops pelted my skin, and I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek to suppress the sudden, desperate urge to cry.

The high heels trapping my feet had been custom-made for me by a master artisan in Paris. Pierre had given them to me as our eighth-anniversary gift.

Now, as I struggled to pull my foot free, the stiff leather rubbed my heel raw until it was bloody and mangled. The pain felt like a cruel reflection of my marriage, which had gradually worn me down over the years until even the memories of our happiness had begun to blur.

After several failed attempts, I finally gave up. I slipped off the shoes and stepped barefoot into the freezing, muddy water.

The cold rain brought back a memory I'd tried hard to bury. When my postpartum depression was at its worst, I'd climbed onto our balcony, standing dangerously close to the edge.

Pierre had been so terrified that his whole body shook as he begged me not to do anything rash. He'd reminded me that our son needed a mother and that he needed me, too.

In the end, I hadn't jumped.

Instead, I'd stepped down and walked barefoot toward him.

Overwhelmed with relief, Pierre had dropped to one knee, carefully slipped my shoes back onto my feet, and rubbed my ankles between his warm palms until the circulation returned.

"Seeing you freeze like this breaks my heart," he'd whispered.

Back then, even the thought of me suffering had been enough to frighten him. Yet now, as the torrential rain soaked me to the bone and a sharp gust of wind sent violent shivers through my body, he couldn't care less whether I was freezing or not.

I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh and pulled out my phone to call a rideshare. Unfortunately, water had seeped inside. The screen flickered briefly before going black.

With my phone dead and my heel still wedged in the drain, I had no choice but to wait beneath the shelter of a nearby bus stop and hope the rain would let up.

The minutes dragged by until the storm finally began to subside. As I started to leave, a sanitation worker passing by noticed my abandoned shoes and called out, "Hey, are you leaving those behind?"

I glanced down at my bare, muddy feet and managed a bitter smile.

"Yes. I don't need them anymore."

Even after I made my position clear, Pierre refused to give up.He continued waiting outside my room every day, hoping that if he stayed long enough, I might eventually forgive him.I paid him no attention. Instead, I concentrated on finishing my photographs, exporting the final images, and officially submitting my portfolio to the competition. All that remained was the two-week wait for the results.Byron brought a fresh bouquet to my door every morning. Pierre, meanwhile, spent a fortune arranging nightly fireworks displays, keeping them going for half a month straight.Every evening, brilliant explosions lit up the sky. Yet no matter how spectacular the displays were, they couldn't illuminate a future that no longer existed for us.At the end of each show, three enormous words appeared in the night sky.[I am sorry.]Sherry casually sipped a beer and pushed a bowl of peanuts toward me."This is even grander than the fireworks he arranged when he was courting you," she remar

The makeup artist worked with practiced precision, applying one final touch after another until my features looked brighter and more defined. As I watched my reflection in the mirror, my thoughts drifted back ten years, to the days when I would curl up in Pierre's arms with nothing on my face but my natural skin.He would kiss me and promise that he would love me just as much, no matter how I aged or how my appearance changed. But as the years passed, he began openly criticizing my casual appearance, while praising Charlotte for knowing how to dress well, maintain her youthful looks, and make herself beautiful.Desperate to hold on to his affection, I started visiting the spa every week and hired a private Pilates instructor. I did everything I could to look my best for our tenth-anniversary photos at Lake Tahoe. As the makeup artist carefully secured my veil, I picked up my camera and snapped a quick shot. Just then, Pierre and Byron burst into the salon, having somehow tracked d

Pierre rushed toward me. His eyes were bloodshot, and he pulled me into a desperate embrace.I felt something cold and wet against the hollow of my neck. His tears were falling as he pressed his face against my shoulder."Please... let's not get a divorce, okay?"Byron scrambled over and grabbed my hand. His eyes were red and swollen as he pleaded, "Mommy, please don't abandon Daddy and me!"During the flight to Lake Tahoe, I'd imagined how they might react once they realized I'd truly left. Knowing them, they'd probably assume I was throwing another childish tantrum to get their attention. After all, I'd spent so long resenting their coldness, their refusal to understand me, and the shameless way they'd always favored Charlotte.I thought I would unleash a torrent of rage, barking at them to get out of my life. Instead, I didn't feel a thing, as if the two people standing before me were nothing more than strangers.Pierre's tears continued to soak into my collar, but instead of

After getting off the plane, I headed straight to the boutique inn I'd booked in advance. The innkeeper, Sherry Jackson, was a huge fan of my photography. Knowing I was arriving that day, she'd even gone out of her way to pick me up at the airport. As soon as she saw me, she glanced behind me with a puzzled expression."Where are your husband and son? Didn't you say you were coming here to celebrate your tenth anniversary and finally take those wedding photos?""We're getting a divorce," I replied with a bitter smile.Sherry gasped, covering her mouth. "But Pierre practically went crazy trying to win you over back then! The month you agreed to marry him, he arranged drone shows over Lake Tahoe every night, filling the sky with displays of roses and showering the air with rose petals."He even knelt before those snow-capped peaks and swore he'd never let you down. How did things end up like this?"Her words brought back memories of a love that had once been intense, passionate, a

Pierre slowly bent down and picked up the document from the coffee table. At the bottom of the page, in neat, unmistakable handwriting, was my signature. It was a copy of a divorce agreement. His heart sank as the gravity of reality finally crashed over him.Having slept her fill, Charlotte emerged from her room, rubbing her stomach. "Did Charlotte finish packing our bags yet? Tell her to whip up some pasta for us before we head out."In the past, whenever she made such a request, Pierre would immediately order me to get cooking. Byron would usually join in, impatiently demanding his breakfast as well. This time, however, neither father nor son responded.Charlotte frowned, apparently mistaking their silence for distraction."Did you hear me? I'm hungry!"Her impatient voice brought a memory rushing back to Pierre: Doris dragging her exhausted body out of bed every morning to prepare breakfast for everyone.Charlotte was an extremely picky eater. She insisted on fresh, homemad

When the morning sunlight pierced his eyes, Pierre instinctively shoved the person beside him."Doris, close the blinds."But the unfamiliar scent of perfume that filled his nostrils made him freeze. In an instant, his sleepiness vanished. He turned his head and found Charlotte fast asleep on the pillow beside him. Panic surged through him as he hurriedly pulled back the duvet to check himself.Thankfully, he was still fully clothed, and Charlotte was wearing her pajamas. Nothing inappropriate had happened between them. The commotion woke Byron, who had been sleeping nearby. He curled deeper into Charlotte's arms and mumbled, "Mommy, I want to sleep a little longer."He opened his eyes and finally registered whose arms he was lying in. His expression changed at once, and he burst into hysterical wails."Why are you here, Aunt Charlotte?"Annoyed by his crying, Charlotte lashed out with her foot and kicked him off the bed.Pierre reacted a second too late.
