I was making a delivery to a rural village when a mob of villagers suddenly swarmed my truck. They surrounded the vehicle, pried open the cargo hold, and started looting everything inside. “We hit the jackpot this time! A whole truckload of flour! This is enough to feed everyone for ages! Grab it!” The cargo door was forced open, and white sacks spilled all over the ground. The villagers went insane, snatching my cargo like starving wolves. They divided it up without the slightest hesitation. I was pinned to the ground, my mouth clamped shut by someone’s hand. All I could do was watch as they stripped the truck clean. But what I was transporting wasn’t flour at all. It was a highly restricted agricultural pesticide powder. The kind no one was supposed to touch.

Kabanata 1

Chapter 1

My name is Ethan Carter, and I had been working in freight delivery for ten years.

I spent most of my time driving routes between cities and rural towns. I had met all kinds of people and run into plenty of frustrating situations. At this point, I thought I had trained myself to stay calm no matter what happened.

Still, I was careful. I didn’t like taking risky jobs.

Most of the time, I delivered ordinary goods like household supplies, grain, vegetables, and other everyday items.

Simple paperwork. Smooth delivery. One completed trip, one payment.

It was a plain, steady life.

Until early this morning, when the fleet suddenly assigned me an urgent private delivery.

They specifically asked me to drive.

The destination was a professional forest service station deep in the mountains.

It was remote, the road conditions were terrible, and almost no drivers were willing to take jobs like that.

Before I left, my boss pulled me aside and warned me again and again.

He said the cargo in the truck looked ordinary, but I absolutely could not touch it.

Because it was a batch of highly controlled, industrial-strength pesticide powder.

The powder was extremely potent, used specifically to kill severe pest infestations in deep mountain forests. It contained highly toxic ingredients, and even too much contact with it could damage the respiratory system.

If someone accidentally swallowed it, symptoms of poisoning would appear quickly.

In serious cases, it could be life-threatening.

This batch was meant for large-scale pest control across an entire stretch of mountain forest.

My boss also made it very clear.

I was not to stop unnecessarily on the road, and I absolutely could not open the cargo hold to check the goods myself.

If the cargo leaked out and caused an accident, I wouldn’t be the only one held responsible.

The entire company would be dragged into it.

I kept every word firmly in mind and didn’t dare get careless.

Only after checking the cargo hold over and over again to make sure it was sealed and locked did I start the truck and head toward my destination.

When the truck reached a downhill dirt road in a village more than ten miles from the mountain entrance, I was controlling my speed and driving steadily down the slope.

Then two sharp hissing sounds suddenly cut through the air.

My heart jolted.

I gripped the steering wheel on instinct.

Before I could even figure out what had happened, the truck began to shake violently. The front of the vehicle tilted toward the roadside, completely out of control.

I slammed on the brakes and fought to steady the truck.

Only then did I see it.

The entire downhill dirt road was covered with tiny thumbtacks.

In just a few seconds, two of my tires had been punctured. Air rushed out, and the tires quickly went flat.

The truck lost its balance.

Pulled by the downhill momentum, it tipped hard toward the dirt slope by the side of the road.

The impact slammed through my body.

My shoulder crashed into the steering wheel, and my forehead struck something hard. Pain exploded across my head, and my vision went black in waves. For a long moment, I couldn’t recover.

The cargo hold had also loosened from the rollover.

The box that had been locked tight now had a gap in it.

The neatly stacked white sacks inside slid slightly toward the opening, showing faintly through the crack.

Enduring the pain all over my body, I gritted my teeth and crawled out of the overturned cab.

Before I could even stand properly, a large group of villagers suddenly rushed out from the woods and the fields around me.
