Chapter 4

Penulis: Nameless
But Katie had won the gold prize at a piano competition, so they went to the awards ceremony instead.

I waited at school until dark, and they never came.

On the way home, I got so hungry I couldn't stand it, so I went to the mall for something to eat. That was where I ran into them, after they'd finally remembered me.

Mom turned and stomped toward my room.

She pulled open my desk drawer and started rummaging through it. She pulled out a black hardcover notebook. It was the diary I'd hidden there.

She flipped to the first page, skimmed it, and sneered. "Writing this garbage again."

She tossed the notebook onto the dining table. "Look, here we go again. 'Katie had a fever, and Mom took her to the hospital. I had a fever and took medicine by myself.' Is that really worth writing down?

"'Katie tore up my drawing. Katie wanted my sweater.' Little things like that, and she's filled half a notebook. She doesn't put her mind into her studies. She puts all of it into competing with her little sister."

But, Mom, Dad, what you never knew was how long those things hurt me. I was so sad I couldn't eat. So sad I couldn't sleep.

Mom snorted coldly. "She just can't stand to see Katie doing well. They're sisters, and she still has to fight her tooth and nail over everything.

"Katie has a heart condition. Can't Amanda show a little understanding? Haven't we treated her well enough? Is there anything she's asked for that we didn't give her?"

Mom picked up the notebook and kept flipping, faster and faster, her fingers crumpling the pages.

"'Katie's pill bottle was empty, and she accused me of swapping her medicine.' Isn't this complete nonsense? Why would Katie falsely accuse you? What would she gain from it?"

"'I overheard Katie on the phone saying the medicine was useless and she'd thrown it out ages ago.'"

A look of sudden understanding crossed Mom's face, and she slammed the notebook shut in a rage. "So that's why she won't come home. She's been setting this up for us all along!

"Amanda, can't you at least make up a more believable story? Why would Katie throw out her medicine? Doesn't she want to get better?"

Mom slammed the notebook down on the table, stood, and paced around the dining room.

"She's too scheming. Amanda is far too scheming. She's only sixteen, and she can already make up something like this. What's she going to be like when she grows up?"

Dad was silent for a moment, then said, "When she gets back, we need to have a serious talk with her."

Mom sneered. "Talk? Like she'll listen? Ask her ten questions and you won't get a single answer. The moment she's unhappy, she slams the door. Last time she tore up Katie's homework, I said a few words to her, and the look she gave me..."

The doorbell rang.

Mom paused, then went to answer it, cursing under her breath. "You little brat, so you finally decided to come home. I'm going to beat you within an inch of your life."

But standing outside was Mom's younger sister, my aunt Kimberly Johnson. Her face was pale, and she was clutching her phone.

Aunt Kimberly's voice shook a little. "Jennie, why haven't either of you been answering your phones?"

Mom frowned. "Phones? Mine died yesterday. I haven't turned it back on since. What's going on?"

Aunt Kimberly glanced into the house, then back at Mom. Her lips moved.

"The police station just called me. They said they couldn't reach you and asked me to pass a message along..."

Aunt Kimberly took a deep breath.

"They said they found a girl's body in the river. They want you to... come and identify her."

The air went suddenly still.

Mom stood rooted to the spot, silent and unmoving.

Dad had come up behind her. He gripped the edge of the open door, his knuckles turning white.

Aunt Kimberly turned her phone around. On the screen was a text message.

Westbrook Police Station: [Family of Amanda Weber, please come at once to identify the body.]

The river was the same as always, its water rushing past.Mom walked to the spot where I'd gone into the water, crouched down, and put her hand in.She said softly, "Amanda, Mom got justice for you."The words had barely left her mouth when a camera shutter clicked in the bushes behind her.Three reporters charged out with cameras raised and shoved microphones almost into her face."Mrs. Weber! Did you just admit to tricking Katie into a confession?""Your daughter Katie's lawyer says you obtained evidence illegally. How do you explain that?""Mr. Weber, there are reports that you saw your older daughter climb up onto the bank and did nothing to save her. "After Amanda died, we donated most of the money. But at the end of the day, you're still our daughter, so we set aside a trust fund to pay for your treatment," Mom said. Katie agreed to meet without a second thought. The next afternoon, Mom arrived at the café first.Katie showed up in a new dress. She pushed open the glass door, walked straight over, and sat down across from Mom.Mom took a few documents out of her bag and slid them over."These are the terms of the trust fund. Take a look."Katie took them and flipped through quickly, then signed her name without the slightest hesitation. When she was done, she pushed the documents back, smug. "Mom, you really didn't have to do this. I knew you'd regret it. After all, Amanda's dead. If anything happened to me too, you really wouldn't have a daughter left."Mom said nothing. She just looked at her.Katie rattled on. "Did you see that video going around the bodyguards? A bunch of times she tried to climb out, and they kicked

Mom ignored her.Aunt Helen's voice rang out again, louder this time. "If you ask me, going early was a mercy. Just look at Mike and Jennie. Look how much they've aged in the past six months..."Before she'd even finished, Dad spun around. He crossed the distance in two strides and grabbed her by the collar, his eyes bloodshot. "Say one more word about my daughter. Go on, I dare you."Everyone around them froze.Aunt Helen was terrified. "M-Mike, I was just talking..."Dad's voice tore out of him. "Just talking? My daughter is lying right there, and you're standing here just talking?"He raised his fist, but then lowered it without striking her and released her collar.Aunt Helen stumbled back a few steps, and someone caught her.Mom turned and walked to my memorial portrait. She wiped the raindrops off the frame with her sleeve. Then she lifted her head and looked at the relatives."My daughter, Amanda Weber, was smart and kind. She was the greatest pride of my life."The

Katie sounded almost giddy. "Mom, don't you and Dad love me the most? Amanda's dead, and she can fix my heart condition. Isn't that a happy ending for everybody?"My mom stood there with her mouth open, staring at the phone in her hand. Her eyes were full of disbelief, as if her own daughter were a stranger. The call ended.Mom looked at the cut photo on the table. In it, all that remained of six-year-old me was a shoulder and one arm at the edge of the picture. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but no sound came out.Slowly, very slowly, she sank into a crouch beside the box of my belongings. She wrapped her arms around herself, and her shoulders began to shake violently.Mom had locked herself in her room for a whole day. No matter how many times Katie called, she refused to answer. That lasted until Dad came home with the dashcam footage from that day and a metal tin he'd found in the car.At 7:56 that night, after they'd finished dinner at a restaurant, their ca

That was where the writing stopped. There was nothing after it.Mom went through the cards one by one, very slowly. In the silent room, her breathing grew heavier and heavier. Then she noticed another notebook pressed flat at the very bottom of the box.It was thin, with a kraft-paper cover. She opened it to the first page. It was in my handwriting.[September 3. Today Katie told her classmates, "My sister's a mute. Don't talk to her." I asked her why she'd said that. She laughed and said, "I was just kidding. Mom got really angry and yelled at me. Katie stood next to her and said, "Maybe Amanda's just in a bad mood."]

The first thing was a farewell note.[If I die, please give my heart to Katie. I took sixteen years that were hers. I'm sorry.]The ink on the medical certificate had bled a little from the water, but the heading was still clear.[Certificate of Diagnosis][Patient Name: Amanda Weber][Diagnosis: Long-term effects of smoke inhalation injury; permanent vocal cord damage][Clinical Opinion: Unable to speak normally]Below were the doctor's signature and a date from three months earlier.Dad's finger stopped on the words "Unable to speak normally" and stayed there for a long time. Then his hand began to shake, so hard that the paper rustled. He stared at it. "Impossible... She... she could talk..."I walked up to him and gave a soft sigh. 'Dad, after the fire, I couldn't speak anymore. You all thought I was just sulking and refusing to call you Mom and Dad.'Dad looked up at my body on the table, then down at the certificate. His lips moved, but no sound came out.The paper
