Chapter 2

Autor: Leaf
"Tell the truth. Did you open it?" Mrs. Couser jabbed a finger inches from my face. "I knew something felt off. Charging one cent to hold packages? So this was the plan the whole time? You see something expensive and steal it?"

My head buzzed as heat rushed to my face.

"Mrs. Couser, how can you even say that? I started this pickup station to help everyone out. One cent doesn't even cover the electricity. Why would I touch your stuff?"

"Why wouldn't you?" Mrs. Tate cut in with a sneer. "One cent isn't much, sure. But some people stay broke so long they get greedy the second they see something expensive. Three grand is probably more than you'd make in years holding packages."

"Mrs. Tate!" My hands were shaking. "I've helped everyone here for six months. Has a single package ever gone missing? Have I ever taken one extra cent?"

"That's because nothing valuable showed up before!" Mrs. Couser snapped, waving the ripped empty box around. "Then a gold necklace finally arrives, and suddenly it disappears. Look at this cheap little setup, collecting pennies all day. You expect me to believe you weren't tempted?"

"Mrs. Couser, you can't accuse me without proof." I forced myself to stay calm. "There's a security camera here. I'll pull up the footage right now, and we'll see what actually happened."

The second I mentioned the camera, both of them stiffened.

I turned and went inside, pulling up the security app on my computer.

Then—

Offline?

My stomach dropped. I refreshed the page over and over, checked the internet connection, but the screen stayed black.

"What about the footage?" Mrs. Couser demanded.

"The camera... I don't know why it's offline."

"Offline?" Mrs. Tate smirked. "Wow, what a coincidence. It didn't break yesterday or tomorrow. Just when Mrs. Couser's necklace disappeared? Annie, did you shut it off yourself?"

Mrs. Couser got even louder. "Exactly! You look guilty as hell. First you disable the camera, then you steal my necklace. Wow. You really planned this out."

"That's not true!" I rushed to explain. "It could be a wiring problem or—"

"Or what?" Mrs. Couser cut me off. "A three-thousand-dollar necklace goes missing here, and suddenly the camera's down? That's way too convenient."

By then, a bunch of neighbors had gathered outside the door.

They whispered to each other, giving me uncertain looks.

"Mrs. Couser lost a necklace? Three thousand dollars?"

"Annie stole it? No way..."

"But the camera dying right now is kinda suspicious..."

"She spends all day doing this for one cent. Maybe something is weird..."

Their whispers hit me like ice water.

I forced my shaking voice steady.

"Mrs. Couser, the pickup station only does basic check-ins. I can't open and inspect every package. If something arrives damaged, you're supposed to contact the delivery company first. You can't just assume I—"

"Bullshit!" she snapped, cutting me off. "It disappeared here. If you didn't take it, then who did? This whole shady setup of yours! If you don't hand over my necklace today, I'm calling the cops. I'll shut this place down, and you can rot in jail."

"Yeah, call the cops," Mrs. Tate chimed in. "People like her should be arrested."

Call the cops?

Shut down my pickup station?

I looked at their ugly expressions, then at the neighbors standing there silently, either doubtful or avoiding my eyes. A heavy wave of sadness hit me all at once.

"I can share everything I learned running the station," I said. "Shelf organization, registration systems, pickup procedures—I already have it all figured out.""That's amazing!" Mr. Wogan shot to his feet. "Annie, you just solved a huge problem for us!"A week later, management posted an announcement in the residents' group chat.[To make package storage and pickup easier, management will officially open the Haven Pickup Station on the first floor of Building 3. About half an hour later, Mrs. Tate came downstairs. She pretended to look around for a bit before locking onto the small box. Then she pulled the same smooth move as before—looking both ways, stuffing the package into her coat, and hurrying back upstairs.I never appeared in the footage once. The evidence couldn't have been clearer.Mrs. Tate was the thief.I edited together the clip of Mrs. Tate stealing Mrs. Couser's necklace with the earlier footage of her taking Demi's package, then sent the video straight into the residents' group chat. The second it posted, the chat went completely silent.A few seconds later, the messages exploded.[Oh my God! Mrs. Couser's necklace really was stolen by Mrs. Tate!][It's the exact same method! She's done this before!][@Unit 302 Mrs. Couser, open your eyes! I kept going."When you accused me of stealing your necklace, where was your proof? When you called me a thief in front of everyone, where was your proof? When you called my company trying to ruin my reputation, where was your proof? When you blocked my door and threatened me, where was your proof?"Mrs. Couser went silent. Her face went ghost-pale."I... I was just panicking..." Her voice got smaller with every word."So panic gives you the right to wreck someone's life?" I said. "Now that you're the one begging for proof, you finally get what that feels like?"The hallway went dead quiet. Everyone stared at her."Mrs. Couser, now you're begging Annie?" Mrs. Nolan said with a laugh. "When you were calling her a thief, where was all this talk about proof?""Seriously. You even went to her job to stir up trouble. That's messed up.""Mrs. Tate was the actual thief, and you let her play you."The whispers kept building. Mrs. Couser's face went red, then drained white again.Sudd

A few seconds later, the girl from Unit 602, Demi, replied in the group chat:[It's mine!! My limited-edition Dior makeup set! It cost $200! I was literally about to go downstairs and grab it! How is it gone already?!]The chat instantly blew up again.[Another package missing??][@management are you guys seriously not doing anything about this?][Who keeps stealing people's stuff?]I messaged Demi privately and got straight to it.[I know who took your package. I have proof. If you want it back, do exactly what I say.]She was shocked and pissed. She agreed immediately. We didn't confront her ourselves.I told Demi to go straight to the management office, ask for the hallway surveillance footage, then call the police. This time, Mrs. Tate was going down in front of the cops. The officers showed up fast.Demi brought one of them straight to Unit 501.Mrs. Tate opened the door. The second she saw the officer standing there next to Demi's furious face, her expression stif

"Her company already knows too. With her character, she'll probably get fired soon."The rumors spread through the complex like a virus.Every time I walked by, people pointed behind my back and whispered loud enough for me to hear.Neighbors who used to smile and say hi either ignored me now or avoided looking at me completely. Then the petty harassment started.Sometimes I'd find ugly marker graffiti scribbled across my doorknob.Late at night, someone would slam on my door, then take off running. One time, somebody even dumped trash outside my apartment.None of it was dangerous. But it was enough to wreck my peace every single day.I knew exactly who was behind it. Mrs. Couser and Mrs. Tate were trying to pressure me into giving up, breaking down, and moving out.Too bad for them.I wasn't leaving. Not only was I staying, I was going to keep my head up—and fight back.I ordered security cameras that same day and installed them outside my door and at the pickup station

His shadow swallowed me whole. My chest tightened. One irrational woman was already a nightmare. Now she'd brought backup.Residents walked past us, clearly seeing what was happening, but every single one kept their distance.Nobody stepped in.Nobody even tried. For the first time, I felt completely alone.I forced down the fear and looked him straight in the eye."What do you mean you won't be nice? You gonna hit me? Or keep harassing my job? I'll say this one last time—I didn't take your necklace. If you have proof, call the cops and let them investigate. Blocking me here and threatening me? That's illegal.""Illegal?" Tony let out a harsh laugh. "Stealing my sister's three-thousand-dollar necklace is illegal. I'm telling you right now, if you don't hand it over today, you're not walking through that door."His giant fist waved right in front of my face.Mrs. Couser stood off to the side looking smug as hell.Just then, a police car pulled up outside the apartment buildi
