Chapter 4 She's Here

Autor: Glutinous Yellow
It was ten minutes to six. I was leaning on the wall, going through my phone. Claire had sent me screenshots of that group chat's messages, and the messages were still pouring in.

Harold texted, "It's nearly six. Where's Elephant? My hand's getting sore."

Girl B answered, "I bet she's having cold feet. She's just going to embarrass herself in front of Jonathan with that size."

Guy C added, "Wasted half an hour for nothing. My legs are numb, and the mosquitoes are having a feast."

…

Down in the park, Wendy stood beside the pavilion, visibly irritated. She chewed her lip in frustration and blasted my phone with calls. I switched my phone to silent mode and ignored every call.

Eventually, she gave up and sent a voice message to the group chat instead. "Give it some time." Her voice reached everyone, and I heard it clearly. "I've been encouraging her all I can. Even bought her some clothes at the mall yesterday."

Her voice was filled with resignation and regret. "Still, she's not brave enough to face her own feelings. I'm disappointed with her."

Even now, she was still putting on an act.

"Doing it for her own good? That's what you call exposing photos of her old self?" Jonathan suddenly spoke, and he looked at Wendy coldly.

Wendy tightened her grip on her phone. Then, almost immediately, tears welled in her eyes.

"You got it all wrong, Jonathan." She stepped forward, already sobbing. "I've taken care of her for three years. Went to the hospital with her, had my meals with her, and even defended her when people bullied her because of her weight.

"That photo's just a joke. I want her to get over it and be a happier girl. Why do you insist on making me the villain?" She wiped her tears as if she was the victim here.

Jonathan tossed the fallen leaf in his hand away. "Did you get her permission before you posted that?" He stood up and approached Wendy. The guy towered over her, and the pressure was overwhelming as he stared at her.

"You use the past she never wanted anyone to see just to get some laughs out of the guys at school. You call that taking care of her?"

Wendy's performance faltered. Her face went white, and she stepped back, feeling nervous. Wendy wanted to retort, but Jonathan's intimidating aura kept her quiet.

It was almost six. She clenched her teeth and looked at the empty entrance. She took a deep breath and gestured at the fake mountain. "Guess she's too chicken to show up." She raised her voice so everyone could hear her. "Let's start the countdown, guys! We'll end this fiasco for her!"

Excited murmurs came from every hiding place. They sounded almost thrilled that the show was about to begin.

"Ten."

"Nine."

"Eight."

I opened up the rusty door and descended the stairs.

"Three."

Harold turned on the speaker just to hype things up. Sounds of elephants stomping and trumpeting echoed in the air, reverberating around the park. Bursts of laughter echoed around the trees.

"Two."

"One."

The countdown was over. I stepped into the park, my light, crisp footsteps covering the amusing sound effects.

The laughter stopped completely. Everyone held their phones up, aiming at the entrance.

I walked out from beneath the shadows of the wisteria and into the setting sunlight. There was no neon-pink tutu. No exaggerated costume. No double chin.

I was in a simple white tee and fitting jeans, and a canvas bag was slung over my back. The shape of my toned waist and defined shoulders was just visible beneath the fabric.

Every face behind those cameras went blank with shock.

I stopped before Jonathan and smiled at him. "Good evening, Jonathan. Sorry to keep you waiting."

The moment I approached, Wendy forced tears into her eyes for the camera. "Emilia, I want to beg for your forgiveness right in front of the whole campus." She stepped toward me and reached for my hand. I moved aside."I confess, I'm jealous of you, but the days we've gone through aren't fake." She cried like she meant it, and the comments started defending her. Of course, they were those who had no idea of the whole story."She's already apologized. Show some mercy.""Yeah. Emilia's heartless."I stood three feet away, watching her coldly. "You made up rumors with my medical history, hinting that I took illegal drugs and went through liposuction. And you did all of that to attract attention to this livestream." I pointed at the phone that was standing on a tripod. "You call this an apology?"Her expression shifted, but she quickly resumed her victim act. "Why do you keep seeing me as the villain?" She suddenly stepped forward again and grabbed my wrist. "I just don't want to los

The students who did not know the full story exchanged uncertain looks."Yeah. Wendy used to be nice to Emilia. I saw them together all the time.""I know. This joke might be overboard, but she doesn't have to go so far."I watched Wendy cry, and all I felt was disgust. "Did you ever really care about me?" I interrupted her coldly. "If you were really my friend, why didn't you apologize after posting that photo on the confession wall?"Wendy's eyes flickered, but she still refused to give up. "That was just a joke! One photo couldn't have hurt you if you weren't so insecure!""You call that a joke?" Claire stepped out of the shadows. Her phone screen glowed in her hand. She looked directly at Wendy. "A joke, huh?"Then, she opened an audio recording and turned the volume all the way up. Wendy's own voice rang across Bamboo Park."And bring your power banks, people. Also, hold your phone firmly when you record anything.""Make sure you get the part where she cries her heart ou

"What do you mean, you've been waiting for a whole year?" Harold nearly stuck his whole body out from behind the fake mountain. He was still holding the speaker, and he was in disbelief. "You've known her for a year?"Wendy snapped out of it and screamed out loud as if she had found her lifeline. "Impossible! She was fatter than a swine a year ago! She didn't even dare to step out of her room. You couldn't have known her!"She was pointing at me, her finger shivering from jealousy. Jonathan glanced at her coldly, as if he was looking at a piece of trash. He then turned around and faced the hiding crowd who were listening intently. His voice echoed across Bamboo Park. "It was at Southlake Park, last year's fall."Last year's fall. The time when I weighed 200 pounds thanks to my treatment, and it was my darkest hour. I started extreme dieting to slim down and went on insane night runs at the park during midnight. One night, everything went black around me, and I fainted on a track w

I turned away from Wendy and looked at the stunned crowd around us. Then I walked over to the stone table, unzipped my canvas bag, and took out a pale blue envelope. Then I turned around and presented it to Jonathan. "For you, Jonathan."Jonathan looked at the envelope. Just when he was about to take it, someone's hand appeared from the side and smacked my wrist away. "No!"Wendy jumped in like a bristling cat, standing between Jonathan and me. Her chest was heaving, and her nails dug deeply into her palms. "Don't take it, Jonathan! This is just a punishment game between us girls!"She turned and stared at me, trying to salvage this situation with what was left of her bravado. "Drop the act. You don't even like Jonathan. This doesn't count!"I watched her struggle, my eyes cold. "You made that post, you started the challenge, and you gathered all these people here to watch." My voice remained calm, but every word seemed to cut deeper. "You don't have the right to call it quits now

Dappled sunlight shone through the cracks between the wisteria vines and landed on my face. A breeze swept through the park, lifting my ponytail and revealing the sharp line of my jaw. The wind pushed my shirt closer to my skin, accentuating my slim waistline.Dead silence fell into Bamboo Park. The voice effects were still playing, but Harold was frozen behind the fake mountain, forgetting to stop the footage.Someone lost their grip on their phones, and it fell into the grass. That thud broke a silent spell that was cast over the park, and the people in the shadows gasped sharply.Whispers drifted from behind the artificial hill."Who's that hottie?""I thought Emilia was coming for a confession? What's this angel doing here?""Maybe she's just passing by! Someone ask for her number!"Wendy stared at my face, her pupils shaking. She stepped forth, and her heel scratched against the stony ground. "You…"The familiar outline of my eyes told her it was me, but her mind was refus
