Chapter 4

Autor: Cup Culprit
My heart ached so sharply it went almost numb.

However, I did not look back.

“Fine. Yara, from today on, you no longer have a father anymore.”

She froze in place. Lily caught up from behind. Her brows were tightly furrowed.

“Melvin, Yara is just a child. She doesn’t know what she’s saying. She’s your daughter. Why are you picking a fight with her?

“Is it really such a big deal just letting Carson accompany Yara for a while? Do you have to be so dramatic? What are you even trying to pull?”

Click.

I opened the door. The winter wind rushed in, lifting my collar.

I stepped forward.

The day Lily found out she was pregnant with Yara had also been Christmas.

I had the chance to go to New York.

However, her pregnancy reactions were severe. She suffered from nonstop morning sickness, night after night, and was always at risk of miscarriage.

After much hesitation, I gave up the opportunity and stayed to take care of her.

When she found out, she brought home a red scarf.

She squeezed herself between me and the window, wrapping it around us again and again, with the other end tied around her own neck.

Snow fell behind her.

Back then, she leaned close to my ear. A soft plume of white breath escaped her lips as she spoke with certainty, “Honey, this is our red thread of fate.

“Every loop represents a sacrifice you made for me. I’m sorry my health made you give up your dream.

“I’ll make a lot of money after I give birth. I’ll take you anywhere you want to go. You’ll never have to suffer again.

“Just wait for me, okay?”

I smiled and said yes.

Now, her life had indeed become better.

However, she thought I was not presentable enough next to Carson, and embarrassing to be seen with in public.

“Close the door already. The child and Carson are going to catch the cold — can you take responsibility for that?”

I ignored her shouting and stepped forward, the wind roaring in my ears.

“Melvin! Fine, you’ve got guts! If you walk out today, don’t ever come back begging even if you die outside!

“Yara, let’s go. We’re taking Uncle Jones out for a big meal!”

Behind me, Carson’s pretentious voice rang out in mock concern.

“Lily, don’t be mad. Melvin is just acting on impulse.

“He doesn’t have a job anyway. Once he runs out of money in a couple of days, he’ll come crawling back. Don’t worry.”

The door slammed shut behind me.

I straightened my back and kept walking, step by step into the distance.

Goodbye, my ten years.

Three days after Melvin left.

The coffee table was piled with takeout boxes, and the floor was littered with toys and dirty clothes Yara had thrown around.

The house constantly smelled of greasy fried chicken.

“Mom! Where’s my school uniform? I can’t find it!”

Yara shouted from her room.

“Find it yourself! Don’t bother me!”

Lily rubbed her temples in frustration as she searched through scattered documents.

Then she looked toward Carson, who was sitting on the sofa playing games.

“Can you at least clean up a bit? The house is turning into a pigsty!”

Carson pouted.

“Lily, I’m a grown man. I don’t do housework. I can help you with business, though.”

Today was the day investors were visiting the company.

Lily remembered Carson’s earlier claim that he could help her out, so she forced down her rising irritation.

“Fine. Come with me to the company. Today, you absolutely have to keep the investors satisfied.”

In the office, Lily was in a state of chaos, scrambling to manage the reception arrangements.

Meanwhile, Carson sat in her office playing on his phone, completely unbothered.

“Carson, go wash the ashtray in the reception room. We’ll need it later.”

He frowned in disgust.

“That’s filthy. Call the cleaning staff.

“The cleaners are busy in the conference room! Can’t you even handle something this small?”

Lily finally snapped.

Carson flinched, but still did not move.

She rubbed her temples in frustration.

“…Forget it. I shouldn’t have expected anything from you.”

Annoyed, she grabbed the ashtray herself and headed to the restroom.

However, the moment she reached the doorway, she stopped.

A familiar figure stood at the sink.

He was wearing a tailored suit, with his head slightly lowered as he washed his hands.

On his wrist was Melvin’s old-fashioned watch.

That restless, irritated heart of hers strangely settled a little.

“So you still came to help me after all. You’re more sensible than Carson.

“All right, hurry up and wash the ashtray. The Golden Age Group representative is arriving soon.”

She patted his shoulder casually, just as she had done countless times with Melvin.

However, when the man turned around, she was momentarily stunned.

What greeted her was a completely unfamiliar face, brows tightly furrowed, eyes sharp as blades, staring directly at her.

“Wash the ashtray?

“Ms. Quinn, Is this how you treat a representative of the Golden Age Group?”

She held up a worn scarf, trying to wrap it around my neck. Her tone was soft and ingratiating.“Are you hungry? Cold? Do you want to grab something to eat? I booked your favorite restaurant…”Yara timidly tugged at the corner of my coat. Her eyes were red.“Daddy…”I took a step back, avoiding their touch.“Say what you came to say.”The smile on Lily’s face faltered, then turned bitter.“Melvin, I know I was wrong.“That liar Carson has already been arrested. Yara and I both see him for what he really is now.“I was blind before, completely out of my mind. This family can’t survive without you. Yara can’t be without her father…“She had a fever yesterday and kept calling your name. She really misses you.”She nudged Yara forward.Immediately, the girl looked up at me with tear-filled eyes.“Daddy, I was wrong… I shouldn’t have said those things to hurt you…“Uncle Jones is a liar. He tricked Mom and me. He didn’t treat us well at all. He wouldn’t cook for me, and he did

When Carson saw that he had been exposed, he stopped pretending altogether and shouted, “Enough talking! Pay up already! If not, they’re going to beat me to death!”“He’s not even my husband. Deal with your own mess!” Lily shouted in fury.“I can’t pay it back…”“You can’t? If you can’t pay, we’ll send you overseas, or to Myanmar. Either way, you’ll find a way to repay it!”As the men loomed closer, grinning viciously, Carson jabbed a finger at the antique vase in the living room and shouted in panic:“Wait, wait! There are plenty of valuable things in this house! Take them! As long as it clears my debt, take whatever you want!“Take it all! Move everything out!”The leader waved his hand, and the others rushed in. They ransacked the villa, hauling everything out in a frenzy.Antiques, luxury watches, even the keys to Lily’s newly purchased car were all taken.“Stop! This is my house! This is robbery!“Get out of the way!”Lily tried to stop them, but one of the men shoved h

Beep, beep, beep. The call disconnected.Yara froze.A few seconds later, she suddenly burst into heart-wrenching sobs.“Mommy… wasn’t I Daddy’s favorite? Why would he say something like that… I want Daddy…”Lily hurriedly tried to comfort her.“Don’t cry, don’t cry. Daddy’s just upset right now. Mommy will bring him back…”Carson, irritated by the noise, could not help but roll his eyes.“What are you crying for? Your dad already said he doesn’t want you anymore. What’s the point of crying? It’s annoying.”His words only made Yara cry harder. Her breath hitched between sobs.Lily whipped her head around and shouted,“Carson! What are you saying to a child? Aren’t things bad enough already?!”Just then, rapid knocking sounded at the door.Yara’s crying faltered. She lifted her head in a daze“Mommy… who is it? Is it… is it Daddy? Did Daddy come back?”Something stirred in Lily’s heart, and a flicker of hope lit her eyes.Had Melvin softened after all? Had he come back f

He guiltily shifted the shopping bag behind his back.“I… I noticed that there was still time, so I stopped by the computer mall…“Yara’s already grown up. She should be able to get home on her own…”“Shopping?!”Lily was shaking with rage, pointing straight at him as she exploded.“Yara was in the infirmary with stomach pain, and it’s raining heavily outside, yet you went shopping?!“What kind of person are you?!”“I’m not her father!” Carson, stung by the scolding, jabbed a finger at Lily and snapped.“You’re her actual mother. If you didn’t go pick her up, why should I be at your beck and call?”He glanced at Yara, who was burning up and half-conscious, then actually took a step back, covering his nose and mouth in disgust.“Don’t tell me she’s got the flu or something. Don’t let her infect me. I’m a guy. I don’t take care of people.”As Lily looked at this man, who once made her feel proud to be seen with him. She now felt nothing but disgust. She ignored him, picked up

They really had not changed at all.I smiled bitterly and shook my head as another message from Axel came through.[By the way, Mr. Lane, I took a closer look just now. Lily’s company really isn’t competitive anymore.][There’s a rising tech company that wants to partner with us. Their technology is better, and their pricing is good too.][What do you think… should we replace Lily?]My fingers hovered over the screen for a long time. All these years, to protect Lily’s pride, I had quietly funneled her more than enough resources.Even for the Golden Age Group’s partnership, I had pulled strings from old connections just to secure it for her.I had done more than enough.[Replace her.]After typing those three words, I let out a long sigh of relief.[Handle it by the book. Don’t take me into consideration.]…After finally seeing off Axel, Lily barely had a moment to catch her breath before her phone rang.“Ms. Quinn? I’m Yara’s homeroom teacher. She’s been complaining of s

“If you’re not Melvin… then why are you wearing his watch?”Lily’s mind couldn’t quite process what was happening as she looked at that unfamiliar yet handsome face. The watch design was identical to the one Melvin had been wearing when he left home. The man in front of her frowned and laughed coldly, brushing her hand away.“I’m Axel Young, the representative sent by the Golden Age Group.“I bought this watch online. What about it, Ms. Quinn? Does your family own the shopping app? Do people need your permission just to buy something?“Or do you think anyone wearing this watch is your husband?”Lily was rendered speechless. Her face turned a deep shade of red.She never expected that this man, who bore such a similar side profile to Melvin, would actually be the Golden Age Group’s representative.“Mr. Young, it’s a misunderstanding… all of it is a misunderstanding…”“Asking me to wash your ashtray was also a misunderstanding?”Axel crossed his arms and looked at her coldly.
