Chapter 3

작가: Goodtale
The comments started flooding in.

[Can the streamer really talk to bears?]

[Be careful.]

[Where is this?]

The viewer count jumped from a few hundred to a few thousand, then broke 10,000. Petra glanced at the screen and let the corner of her mouth curve upward.

She turned the camera toward the car. The live stream had passed 30,000 viewers.

She tilted her head slightly, and the lens lingered on my face for two seconds. "So, what do you guys think? This one won't get out of the car. What do we do with him?"

Curt squeezed his face into the frame. "What do we do? Let the people weigh in! Petra has already confirmed it. The bear's harmless, and this guy flat-out refuses to get out. Are you telling me that's not cowardice?"

The comments poured in.

[Total coward.]

[Who even is this guy? Stop holding Petra up.]

[If you're too scared to get out, go home and cry to your mom.]

[He's literally the only wimp in the whole car.]

Travis held his phone up to his mouth and shouted into the live stream, "Everybody, type 'coward'! Let our boy here see what you guys think!"

The word filled the screen, one after another, like a wall closing in one brick at a time.

Curt threw his head back laughing. "See that? Thirty thousand people think you're a coward. Still gonna say you won't get out?"

I glanced at them and repeated myself. "Yeah. I'm a coward. A total coward."

The comments exploded.

[He actually admitted it LMAO.]

[This guy's hopeless.]

[Petra, forget him. Just go already.]

Petra pulled the phone back and smiled at the camera. "Whatever. To each their own."

She panned the camera over Curt, Travis, Danny, and Ray Sutter.

"We're going. The other guy can stay in the car and watch the live stream while we make history."

She reached for the door handle.

"Go ahead. I'm all for it."

Petra ignored me.

She climbed out with her phone raised and smoothed her hair for the camera. In the live stream, her figure moved toward the scrubland where the Greyridge bear lay not far ahead.

Curt followed, stuffing the cracker bag into his pocket. Travis was behind him. Danny bent down and picked up a stick. Ray went last, a slight limp from an old leg injury slowing his pace. He looked back at me once.

I mounted my phone on the dashboard holder, started recording, and opened Petra's live stream.

On the screen, the five of them were getting closer to the bear.

The Greyridge bear did not stand up right away. It lay there, its chest rising and falling in long, slow intervals. It looked like an animal that had gone days without food and no longer had the strength to move.

The comments erupted.

[It's so docile!]

[Petra really did communicate with it! It's not attacking!]

[What kind of superpower is this? She can even tame wild animals.]

[Like, follow, and share, people. We're witnessing history!]

Petra's voice came through the phone, pitched low as if she were approaching something sacred. "It told me it's hungry. It just wants something to eat. Don't be scared."

She took the crackers from Curt, crouched down, and set them on the gravel less than ten feet from the bear.

The comments flooded the screen.

[Petra is so brave.]

[This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.]

[The queen of animal rescue!]

Curt turned back to the camera and gave a thumbs-up. "When research papers come out of this, remember today. Our streamer took us face-to-face with a bear. Some people, though..."

He shot a glance toward the car. "They're only good for sitting inside and watching the stream."

Another wave of laughter filled the comments.

The Greyridge bear did not eat the crackers. Its head lifted slightly.

I stared at the screen.

Its eyes were moving, not toward the crackers but toward the people. Its pupils tracked left to right and back again like two black glass marbles, calculating something.

I typed two words into the comment box: [Run. Now.]

I hit send.

Curt looked down at his phone. He held the screen up to show Petra and burst out laughing.

"The coward's typing 'run now' in the comments. That's hilarious. With Petra here, what could possibly go wrong..."

The comments erupted. Not one at a time. All at once. The word 'run' crashed across the screen in waves.

[Get out of there!]

[Look at the bear's eyes!]

[It's going to attack! Run!]

The Greyridge bear stood up. Not slowly. Instantly. It rose to its full height and was half a body taller than the tallest person there. Its foot came down on the crackers and crushed them to dust.

Petra stumbled back a step. Her phone hit the ground, and the frame went sideways from the camera pointing at the sky.

Then came her scream, followed by the bear's roar. Next was the dull thud of something hitting the gravel.

I took my phone off the mount, closed the live stream, and dialed emergency services.

"Greyridge bear zone, Route 318 West. We need an ambulance and wildlife enforcement. Now."

One month later, the sky was overcast on the day the verdict came down, and the gallery was full of colleagues from the institute, Curt's relatives, and a handful of reporters who had traveled in from the Greyridge region.Petra stood at the defendant's bench. The scar on her face had faded to a pale pink. She was not wearing the plain-colored dress from before. She had replaced it with a dark blue jacket. The judge read the ruling. The charge of involuntary manslaughter was upheld. The sentence was three years in prison, with civil damages totaling $420,000, to be paid within 30 days of the ruling taking effect.Petra's final statement was a single sentence. Her voice was quiet, but the courtroom was silent, so everyone heard it."I really can understand what animals are saying. I'm certain the bear told me it wouldn't hurt anyone. I don't know how it turned out this way, but I didn't lie to Curt."The gallery was dead silent, and the judge did not respond. When the bailiff led h

In that moment, every pair of eyes in the hallway held the same thing—self-preservation.Every one of them wanted to cut themselves loose before Petra was torn apart completely. She turned and walked toward the HR office. She took fewer than ten steps. The door to the main lab on the third floor was cracked open. I stood inside, watching the entire scene through the gap.Ray had appeared beside me at some point. His left arm was in a sling, and his right shoulder leaned against the door frame. He was not looking in. He was looking out.At the far end of the hallway, Petra's figure turned the corner and disappeared behind the frosted glass door of the HR office."She dragged everyone into the water with her. Now, the tide's gone out, and she's the only one left standing in the mud."Ray finished speaking, pushed the door open with his shoulder, and walked out. He went in the opposite direction from Petra. The onlookers in the hallway began to disperse in twos and threes with the

The judge struck the gavel."The defendant knowingly provided a false assurance of safety and used a personal, unscientific method to induce multiple individuals to enter a dangerous area. The conduct of the defendant, Petra Winslow, exceeds the threshold of mere negligence."The court will consider the full circumstances of the case and issue its ruling on a date to be announced."News of the trial reached the institute faster than the summons had. That afternoon, one of the colleagues who had been sitting in the back of the gallery posted a screenshot from the footage into the institute group chat. There was no caption, just the image. Petra's hands were pressed flat against Curt's back, and the bear's paw was suspended less than two feet above Curt's head. The chat went dead for a full four hours. Not a single one of the people who had lined up to cheer for Petra before made a sound. Then, people started deleting their old comments.Under Petra's post, 'Animals Do Not Attack

Someone in the gallery lowered their folded arms. The colleagues from the institute sitting in the back rows were hearing the complete conversation from inside the car for the first time, not the version Petra had told after the fact. The second set of evidence was Curt's voluntary statement before exiting the vehicle, spoken directly into the phone camera before the incident."I, Curt Brennan, am voluntarily getting out of this car to feed a wild Greyridge bear. The bear won't bite. Petra confirmed it. If anything happens, it's on me. Got that? Want me to do another take for backup?"Curt's mother lowered her head. She was not crying. She just buried her eyes in her palms.Petra's lawyer stood. "This recording only proves that Mr. Brennan voluntarily exited the vehicle. It does not prove that the defendant coerced or misled him."The judge raised her hand and motioned for him to sit down. The third set of evidence was footage from the day of the incident, shot with my camera thr

The first thing Petra did after her suspension was not call a lawyer. She posted online, hitting every platform she had. After 30,000 people watched her live stream on the day of the incident, her account jumped from 8,000 followers to 50,000 overnight. The top comments were all variations of [We believe you, Petra], [Bear whisperer, stay strong], and [The guy who wouldn't get out of the car is the one who should be investigated.]Just after 11:00 pm, she published a piece close to 5,000 words long and posted it simultaneously to the institute's group chat and her public feed. The title was 'What I Haven't Said About the Greyridge Incident.' She never mentioned me by name, but every word pointed in my direction. The argument had three layers.Someone had entered the interaction with the assumption that the bear would attack, and that fear disrupted the entire dynamic. The real cause of the accident was the bear's deceptive behavior. It played weak and starving, fooling everyone.

The last sound of chairs shifting died out in the conference room. Someone uncrossed their legs. The director took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose.Petra's lips moved. "When I said it wouldn't hurt anyone, that was just my instinct at the time. I closed my eyes to feel its energy field..."She stopped. The sentence broke off halfway as she could not find the next word. Her cadence was nothing like the steady, measured tone of a public lecture anymore.I did not respond. I pressed play on the second clip. The sound of Curt yanking my collar exploded from the speaker, followed by a chair groaning under someone's weight and the scrape of fabric during the struggle. Then came Curt's voice."I, Curt Brennan, am voluntarily getting out of this car to feed a wild Greyridge bear. The bear won't bite. Petra confirmed it. If anything happens, it's on me. Got that? Want me to do another take for backup?"Curt's mother pressed her hand over her mouth. Her shoulders did no
