Chapter 4

Author: Choco Crisp
In all the years since I'd moved back, when had anything ever been equal?

Alistair dropped to his knees with a thud.

"Bennett... I know you've never liked me... but I really need this opportunity... Please..."

I let out a cold laugh.

"Fine. You can have it. But first, you have to get down on all fours and crawl around the room like a dog. Do that, and it's yours."

"You—"

Dad's face changed.

"That's ridiculous! Bennett! How can you treat your brother like that?"

I didn't back down.

"Why so worked up? That's exactly what Alistair told me back when he wouldn't let me into the house. So why the double standard?"

My parents went silent.

Back then, they had both tried to talk me down, saying Alistair was "a little mischievous, but he doesn't mean any harm." They said he was "just stubborn" and told me to do whatever he said.

I sighed and decided to let out every grievance I'd swallowed over the years.

"Dad, when you took us hiking, Alistair complained that he was being left out, so you just left me alone on the mountain. I walked for three hours with wolves howling around me before I made it home.

"How can anyone play favorites that badly?

"If you wanted me dead, you should've just said so. I'm worthless to you anyway.

"Mom, you never came to a single one of my parent-teacher conferences because you didn't want Alistair to feel left out. You only ever went to his. Kids in my class whispered that nobody wanted me. But I had a mother...

"I'm your biological son. What did I ever do to deserve being treated like this?"

By the time I finished, my cheeks were wet and cold. I'd thought they couldn't hurt me anymore.

Both of them looked shaken.

Tears still streaming down my face, I forced a smile.

"Fine. Let Alistair have what he wants. Give him the opportunity."

My parents looked up quickly, but before they could thank me, I added, "Consider it payback for bringing me into the world. After this, we're even."

Dad froze.

"What do you mean?"

I spelled it out for him.

"I mean you never raised me, so I don't owe you anything for that, and from now on, we have nothing to do with each other."

Mom panicked.

"No... no... I carried you for nine months. You're my own flesh and blood. How can you—"

I shrugged.

"Then Alistair doesn't get the opportunity."

My parents fell silent, and I watched the hesitation pass between them.

A moment later, Dad clenched his jaw.

"Deal!"

The moment he said it, Alistair flashed me a victorious smile.

My vision slowly blurred.

Once again, forced to choose between me and Alistair, my biological parents had chosen him.

Using my bloodstained sweater as proof, Alistair landed interview after interview with the media.

His agency seized the moment and lined up several TV roles for him.

My parents assumed what I'd said that night was just anger talking, and they kept trying to make it up to me, in ways big and small.

They deleted every post they'd made after the earthquake that same night.

They edited me into the family photo of the three of them that they'd been using as their profile picture.

On top of that, they dragged me to take a bunch of new family portraits, which they had enlarged and hung on their bedroom wall.

That night, for once, I turned on the TV.On the screen, both of my parents had gone noticeably gray. They looked worn down by everything they'd been through."Bennett, your mom and I aren't asking for your forgiveness. We just want you to take good care of yourself from now on."Everything that happened before was our fault. Don't let our mistakes make you doubt yourself. You're a good kid, such a good kid. You're lovable, honest, smart, and brave. Take all of that with you and go explore the world."Bennett, we won't bother you anymore. We hope you get to live the life you want."It suddenly all made sense.Because of everything I'd been through growing up, I'd gotten used to making myself small.I thought Darlene didn't love me because something was wrong with me. I thought my parents didn't love me because something was wrong with me too.So I got stuck in a cycle of self-doubt. Whenever I ran into something hard, I was always the first to give up on myself. But some thing

But nobody paid her any attention.Mom was so furious that she kicked her several times. On the way home, my parents finally understood how badly they had misjudged me.They wanted to apologize, but the words stuck in their throats. They had hurt me too much. No apology could ever make up for it.When Alistair learned we'd gone to see Darlene, he didn't seem to care at all that his own birth mother had been sent to prison.Instead, he looked nervous."Dad... what did she tell you? That woman's out of her mind. Don't believe a word she says!"He was terrified she'd let slip what my life had really been like.Dad was so angry he laughed, clapping loudly."Wonderful! You really are that woman's son! Even now, all you care about is saving your own skin!"I must've been blind to hurt my own son over and over again for you!"Get out! Get the hell out!"Alistair looked to Mom for help."Mom... what's Dad talking about? I don't understand..."He thought Mom would fight with Dad

She spat at Dad viciously."I'll hit him however I want. What's it to you?"Then she lifted her chin, looking rather pleased with herself."What, you feel sorry for him? I've been beating him since he was a kid. There's not one inch of him I haven't bruised. You going to feel sorry for all of it?"She had always been like this, using me as a punching bag to prove she was in charge. It was nothing like the story Alistair had told my parents. My parents narrowed their eyes, their gazes moving back and forth between Darlene and me.I knew they suspected I'd staged the whole thing. They always took Alistair's side.Darlene assumed I had no standing in my new family, so she didn't show me the slightest bit of respect. She kept spewing insults until even my parents started to frown.Just then, our neighbor, Mrs. Gibbs, rushed into the house and pulled me behind her."You poor, foolish boy! Why on earth did you come back? Go! You finally got away from them. Don't ever come back her

The missing-person appeals ran on TV for an entire month. The others on the team couldn't stand it anymore, so they just turned the TV off and tried to cheer me up.I thought this peaceful life could last forever, until my parents tracked me down six months later. They showed up loaded with bags, and they started crying the second they saw me."Bennett... you've gotten so thin..."Come home with us, okay?"Are you staying warm out here? Are you eating? You changed your number, and we had no way to reach you."We asked dozens of friends for help, and it took us more than half a year to find out where you were. Please, come home with us..."I took two steps back to put some distance between us."Mr. Holloway, Mrs. Holloway, we've already cut ties."Do I need to remind you that Alistair is a big star now? You two should keep your end of the deal."My parents' eyes reddened, and they stammered, trying to say something.Just then, Professor Everard spotted me. He came hurrying o
