Chapter 2

Author: Jo Wren
Isabella moved faster than I expected.

The next morning, I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my top-floor office in the Vitale Building, soaking up the sun.

It was the one place in this building that still belonged to me.

The intercom on my desk buzzed. The receptionist was patching through a video call.

The screen lit up, and my uncle Vincenzo's face appeared.

Behind him were the olive groves of our old home in Sicily, green trees stretching all the way up the hillside.

“Luca, have you eaten breakfast?”

My uncle's voice was gentle, his Sicilian accent thick.

“I have, Uncle.”

I looked at his graying hair and felt a pang in my chest.

After my father died, my uncle was the only blood relative I had left.

He was my father's younger brother, and the current chairman of the Family Council.

Back then, he had been the one to persuade the Council to appoint Isabella as the family's acting head.

He had never married, and he had loved me like his own son since I was little.

But his health had been poor in recent years, so he had been staying at the family's old estate in Sicily, leaving Isabella in charge of the family's affairs.

“Good, good.”

He rubbed his hands together, looking a little awkward.

“Isabella called me this morning. She said the family is doing some sort of… structural upgrade.”

He didn't understand financial jargon, so he did his best to repeat what Isabella had told him.

“Luca, I know you might be upset.”

“But I've known Isabella since she was young. She worked alongside your father for years. She wouldn't hurt us.”

My uncle sighed and patiently tried to persuade me.

“She and Riccardo just got married. Riccardo is a well-educated young man. He could have stayed on Wall Street and made a fortune, but instead he came back to help us run the family business.”

“We owe them some gratitude.”

I listened quietly and didn't interrupt.

Isabella really was clever. She knew my uncle was the person I trusted most, so she'd sent him to talk me into signing.

“Uncle, do you know how they plan to 'upgrade' things?” I asked calmly.

He paused, then waved a hand.

“I think they're just giving some shares to the people who actually do the work.”

“Luca, there's always more money to be made.”

“Our family has deep pockets. We won't miss a little here or there.”

“Listen to your uncle. Don't fight with them. Just sign.”

“After that, you can live in peace. If anything happens, Isabella will take care of it.”

I looked into my uncle's trusting eyes but said nothing.

Isabella had kept him so far removed from the family's affairs that he had no idea what was really going on.

“I understand, Uncle.”

“Take care of your health.”

I ended the call.

The moment the call ended, the office door swung open.

Riccardo walked in carrying a glass of freshly squeezed blood orange juice.

He set it on my desk, that calm smile still on his face.

“Fresh-squeezed blood orange. A little vitamin C.”

He glanced at the blank screen.

“Finished talking to your uncle? The old man is reasonable.”

I didn't touch the juice. I looked at his face.

“Was there something else?”

He pulled out the chair across from me and sat, graceful as ever.

“It's nothing serious.”

He took a sheet of paper from his pocket and slid it over to me.

“Since you won't sign the equity agreement, I'll have to take matters into my own hands as the family's CFO.”

“Keeping this top-floor office for you is too expensive.”

“You hardly come in anyway. There's no point in keeping an office this big.”

“I've already told the administration department to convert it into a VIP reception room tomorrow.”

He looked at me, his eyes cold and unprovocative.

“Also, the family pays for your armored car and full-time driver.”

“The family is cutting unnecessary expenses, so as of today, your car and driver are suspended.”

Riccardo pulled the black card out of my pen holder and twirled it between his fingers.

“The family has always covered the charges on this black card. That ends today.”

“Luca, you're not a kid anymore. You can't be supported by the family forever.”

He slipped the card into his wallet.

“Learning to stand on your own will do you good.”

Watching him, I could only find it laughable.

He made everything sound reasonable, even as he stripped me of everything he could.

He had a tidy justification for every decision, making it difficult to argue with him.

“So, as of today, I have no place in this building.”

I stood and straightened my suit jacket.

Riccardo stood as well, his confident smile never wavering.

“You can request a desk in the general staff area at one of the family's companies.”

“I checked your attendance, too. You come in fewer than three days a month.”

“Under company policy, that counts as absenteeism.”

“Riccardo, do you think that controlling the family's books means controlling everything?”

I asked him calmly.

Riccardo chuckled and reached out to smooth a wrinkle in my jacket.

“Luca, times have changed.”

“A will written twenty years ago can't determine who's qualified to lead this family.”

“What matters is ability, what you can do for the family.”

He turned toward the door.

“I'll have your personal belongings packed up and delivered to you.”

  • They Took My Birthright, I Took Their Power   Chapter 10

A week later, the midsummer sun filtered through the branches of the century-old olive tree in the yard, casting dappled light and shadow. The Vitale Building had been reclaimed by the trust, and a new team of professional managers was carrying out a sweeping overhaul.Isabella had been tried before the Family Council for betraying the family. The verdict was unanimous: every position and all authority stripped, her name struck from the family rolls, and she was banished from the East Coast for good.Without the Vitale family's protection and power, the gentle mask she was so proud of shattered completely.I heard she went around begging for help, but even those who once bowed and scraped before her now avoided her.Riccardo had tried to flee to Europe overnight, but the Family Council had already frozen the assets under his control. At the airport, his cards were declined at the check-in counter, and the debt collectors, with several debts now come due, caught up with him there. Now h

“What did you do wrong?”My uncle's lips trembled violently, and the color drained from his face.He looked as if he no longer recognized the woman in front of him, the woman he had watched grow up and loved like a daughter.“You took Luca's lifeline money to plug your holes. You hollowed out everything his father left him, and you still ask me what you did wrong?”My uncle suddenly raised his hand as if to slap her.But his hand stopped in midair and turned into a wrenching fit of coughing.“Cough… cough, cough…”He bent over violently, as if he were trying to cough up his very organs.Giacomo rushed forward to support him and rubbed his back.Isabella stood where she was, watching my uncle suffer. A complicated emotion flickered through her eyes, but it was quickly covered by indifference.“Uncle, it's too late for this now. Saying any of this won't help.”She even spoke in a tone so rational it bordered on cruel.“The business world is a battlefield. I just made one wrong move.”“Bu

“Return it?”I looked at Isabella's tear-streaked face. I didn't step back, and I didn't flinch.“What will you return it with?”I took another document from Orsini and flipped straight to the last page.“To cover the hole left by the money you siphoned into overseas shell companies, you drained the family's working capital and took out a fifty-million-dollar loan from private lenders, pledging the estate's land and other family assets as collateral without authorization.”My voice echoed down the corridor.“Now Beacon Capital has put its investment on hold. Your cash flow is drying up.”“With interest and default fees piling up on a fifty-million-dollar loan, even if you sold every asset you have left, you might not clear it.”Isabella froze where she stood. She had thought her hidden books were well concealed. I had torn them open to the bone.Riccardo could no longer maintain his polished act.He shoved Isabella aside and jabbed a finger at my nose, his voice hoarse and cracking.“L

The moment Isabella finished speaking, the atmosphere in the corridor dropped to freezing.Riccardo seemed to grab at a lifeline and immediately chimed in.He forced a slightly twisted smile and straightened his suit.“Luca, Isabella is right.”“Business isn't a game.”“Do you think locking a door means you win?”“The new company we just established has already secured a thirty-million-dollar investment commitment from Beacon Capital. The first tranche is due to arrive soon.”He lifted his chin, regaining some of his polished arrogance.“With that money and Isabella's connections, within three months we'll build a new brand that can go toe-to-toe with the Vitale family.”“By then, your few rundown warehouses will rot in your hands. You won't even be able to pay the dockworkers.”Listening to his confident grand vision, I didn't get angry. If anything, I felt a little sad for him.I supposed this was what it looked like to have no idea how small you were in the grand scheme of things.I

The air in the corridor seemed to freeze. The only sound was the faint hum from the air conditioning vent.Riccardo drew a deep breath and tugged at his tie.His movements still held their poise, but his fingertips trembled slightly.“Luca, do you really have to go this far?”He looked at me in that pained, heartbroken tone, as if I were a hopeless sinner.“Isabella has stayed up countless nights for this family. Do you see none of the effort she's put in?”“You're using a dead rule to erase more than a decade of her work. That's not fair.”He was trying to pin me down with the moral high ground, as he always did.I looked at his face, so full of grievance, and couldn't help laughing.“Fair?”I turned to Isabella, who had been silent all this time.“Isabella, why don't you tell him what you were really doing on all those sleepless nights?”Isabella's throat moved. She said nothing.I pulled another stack of documents from my bag and flung them straight at her chest. The papers scattere

A cold electronic chime echoed down the corridor.Isabella's smile stiffened.Thinking the card hadn't registered, she pressed it against the reader again, harder this time.“Beep. Access denied. This account's access privileges have been revoked.”The corridor fell dead silent.Riccardo's expression changed too. He tried his own card. The same chime sounded again. While they stared at the reader in disbelief, footsteps sounded behind them, leather soles on carpet.I walked out of the lounge at the far end of the corridor, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee.“That access card isn't working so well, is it?”I blew on the rim of my cup and spoke.Isabella turned around. When she saw it was me, her brow creased before she could stop it.But she quickly composed herself and put her gentle mask back in place.“Luca, what are you doing here?”“Didn't I tell you to find your own way home?”She glanced down at the black-and-gold card in her hand and explained in a mild voice.“The administ
