Chapter 4

Author: Jo Wren
July arrived before I knew it.

The ballroom on the top floor of the Bay Hotel was brilliantly lit.

Tonight was the annual memorial dinner honoring the old Don on the anniversary of his death. More than three hundred family members had turned out.

By family tradition, the first candle at the annual memorial dinner had to be lit by a member of the Vitale family.

It was more than a tribute to the old Don. It was a public declaration of who truly held power in the Vitale family.

I stood beside a marble pillar at the edge of the ballroom.

At the head of the long table, before the old Don's portrait, Isabella stood in an exquisitely tailored black velvet gown, her expression gentle and solemn.

Riccardo, in a well-cut suit, stood beside her. They looked like a match made in heaven.

My uncle had been invited too, but he was seated at a table farther from the stage.

He gazed up at Isabella on the stage, his face full of pride.

The ceremony began.

The emcee's voice rang out across the ballroom. “Please light the memorial candle!”

Isabella didn't even glance at me.

She walked straight to the candelabra, took a match from the attendant, and lit the thick candle herself.

Then she and Riccardo stood side by side before the candle and bowed deeply to the old Don's portrait.

The three hundred family members in the ballroom burst into applause.

“Ms. Conti, thank you for all your hard work these years!”

“Here's to another brilliant year for the Vitale family!”

Applause and cheers swept through the ballroom. No one noticed me standing alone in the corner.

I had become a nobody, not even worth a second glance.

When the ceremony ended, the crowd began to thin.

I turned to leave.

“Luca, wait a moment.”

Isabella's voice came from behind me.

She and Riccardo approached me side by side, their smiles still in place.

Riccardo pulled a white envelope from his inner jacket pocket and held it out to me.

“Luca, things have been so hectic tonight that I almost forgot the most important part.”

As the ballroom quieted, his voice carried across the room.

“At last week's Council meeting, the Council formally voted to freeze your dividend account because you failed to attend without an excuse.”

He looked at me with an expression of practiced concern.

“Luca, you're an adult now. It's time to learn to support yourself.”

“There's three thousand dollars in cash in here. From now on, the administration department will deposit that amount into your account every month.”

He slipped the envelope into my coat pocket, then straightened my collar as casually as if he were doing me a favor.

“Learn to manage your money. Stop wasting it like you used to.”

“This is how you'll learn to be independent sooner.”

Isabella stood beside him, took a sip from her glass, and nodded.

“That's right, Luca. Riccardo means well.”

“A wolf raised in a greenhouse will never learn to survive in the wild.”

“Once you learn to live on three thousand dollars a month, you'll understand why we did this.”

I glanced down at the envelope in my pocket and almost laughed.

Three million dollars a month in dividends, reduced to a three-thousand-dollar handout.

They dressed up outright theft in such lofty language that I almost wanted to applaud.

“You froze my dividends, took over my father's estate, and now you won't even let me light the first candle at his memorial.”

I looked at them calmly. I felt neither anger nor resentment.

“Isabella, do you think this family is now completely yours?”

Isabella frowned slightly, as if disappointed by my ingratitude.

“Luca, you're always so extreme.”

“This family belongs to those who have bled for it, not to someone who thinks his last name entitles him to everything.”

She glanced at her watch, clearly finished with the conversation.

“Enough. We have to get back to the building for a video conference with our overseas partners. Find your own way home.”

With that, she and Riccardo headed for the elevator and went down to the black armored Lincoln waiting outside.

I didn't stop them. I just stood there and watched the car pull out of the hotel and vanish into the night.

Half an hour later, on the top floor of the Vitale Building.

Isabella and Riccardo stepped out of the elevator, chatting and laughing as they approached her office.

Isabella pulled a black-and-gold access card with top-level clearance from her handbag and swiped it across the reader.

“Beep. Access denied.”

A week later, the midsummer sun filtered through the branches of the century-old olive tree in the yard, casting dappled light and shadow. The Vitale Building had been reclaimed by the trust, and a new team of professional managers was carrying out a sweeping overhaul.Isabella had been tried before the Family Council for betraying the family. The verdict was unanimous: every position and all authority stripped, her name struck from the family rolls, and she was banished from the East Coast for good.Without the Vitale family's protection and power, the gentle mask she was so proud of shattered completely.I heard she went around begging for help, but even those who once bowed and scraped before her now avoided her.Riccardo had tried to flee to Europe overnight, but the Family Council had already frozen the assets under his control. At the airport, his cards were declined at the check-in counter, and the debt collectors, with several debts now come due, caught up with him there. Now h

“What did you do wrong?”My uncle's lips trembled violently, and the color drained from his face.He looked as if he no longer recognized the woman in front of him, the woman he had watched grow up and loved like a daughter.“You took Luca's lifeline money to plug your holes. You hollowed out everything his father left him, and you still ask me what you did wrong?”My uncle suddenly raised his hand as if to slap her.But his hand stopped in midair and turned into a wrenching fit of coughing.“Cough… cough, cough…”He bent over violently, as if he were trying to cough up his very organs.Giacomo rushed forward to support him and rubbed his back.Isabella stood where she was, watching my uncle suffer. A complicated emotion flickered through her eyes, but it was quickly covered by indifference.“Uncle, it's too late for this now. Saying any of this won't help.”She even spoke in a tone so rational it bordered on cruel.“The business world is a battlefield. I just made one wrong move.”“Bu

“Return it?”I looked at Isabella's tear-streaked face. I didn't step back, and I didn't flinch.“What will you return it with?”I took another document from Orsini and flipped straight to the last page.“To cover the hole left by the money you siphoned into overseas shell companies, you drained the family's working capital and took out a fifty-million-dollar loan from private lenders, pledging the estate's land and other family assets as collateral without authorization.”My voice echoed down the corridor.“Now Beacon Capital has put its investment on hold. Your cash flow is drying up.”“With interest and default fees piling up on a fifty-million-dollar loan, even if you sold every asset you have left, you might not clear it.”Isabella froze where she stood. She had thought her hidden books were well concealed. I had torn them open to the bone.Riccardo could no longer maintain his polished act.He shoved Isabella aside and jabbed a finger at my nose, his voice hoarse and cracking.“L

The moment Isabella finished speaking, the atmosphere in the corridor dropped to freezing.Riccardo seemed to grab at a lifeline and immediately chimed in.He forced a slightly twisted smile and straightened his suit.“Luca, Isabella is right.”“Business isn't a game.”“Do you think locking a door means you win?”“The new company we just established has already secured a thirty-million-dollar investment commitment from Beacon Capital. The first tranche is due to arrive soon.”He lifted his chin, regaining some of his polished arrogance.“With that money and Isabella's connections, within three months we'll build a new brand that can go toe-to-toe with the Vitale family.”“By then, your few rundown warehouses will rot in your hands. You won't even be able to pay the dockworkers.”Listening to his confident grand vision, I didn't get angry. If anything, I felt a little sad for him.I supposed this was what it looked like to have no idea how small you were in the grand scheme of things.I

The air in the corridor seemed to freeze. The only sound was the faint hum from the air conditioning vent.Riccardo drew a deep breath and tugged at his tie.His movements still held their poise, but his fingertips trembled slightly.“Luca, do you really have to go this far?”He looked at me in that pained, heartbroken tone, as if I were a hopeless sinner.“Isabella has stayed up countless nights for this family. Do you see none of the effort she's put in?”“You're using a dead rule to erase more than a decade of her work. That's not fair.”He was trying to pin me down with the moral high ground, as he always did.I looked at his face, so full of grievance, and couldn't help laughing.“Fair?”I turned to Isabella, who had been silent all this time.“Isabella, why don't you tell him what you were really doing on all those sleepless nights?”Isabella's throat moved. She said nothing.I pulled another stack of documents from my bag and flung them straight at her chest. The papers scattere

A cold electronic chime echoed down the corridor.Isabella's smile stiffened.Thinking the card hadn't registered, she pressed it against the reader again, harder this time.“Beep. Access denied. This account's access privileges have been revoked.”The corridor fell dead silent.Riccardo's expression changed too. He tried his own card. The same chime sounded again. While they stared at the reader in disbelief, footsteps sounded behind them, leather soles on carpet.I walked out of the lounge at the far end of the corridor, holding a cup of freshly brewed coffee.“That access card isn't working so well, is it?”I blew on the rim of my cup and spoke.Isabella turned around. When she saw it was me, her brow creased before she could stop it.But she quickly composed herself and put her gentle mask back in place.“Luca, what are you doing here?”“Didn't I tell you to find your own way home?”She glanced down at the black-and-gold card in her hand and explained in a mild voice.“The administ
