Chapter 4 Taking Back My Life

Author: Clementine Hart
I kicked the door open in a burst of anger.

When Ian saw the fury on my face, he froze for a moment. "What's wrong with you now? Weren't you running a fever? You've still got the strength to stand. Don't tell me you were faking it."

"Ian, you took my admission letter back then, didn't you? And my songs… You gave every single one of them to Evie, didn't you? And now you're even planning to use my money to pay off her debt? Have you no shame at all?"

Ian's gaze flickered, and for a moment, he didn't know what to say. Then Evie's voice came through from the other end of the call.

"Oh, come on, why are you making it sound like yours and mine? Lexi, we're family. Ian's going to marry you sooner or later anyway. Letting him use your admission letter to study wouldn't have hurt you, and besides, he didn't even end up going. And I'm your sister—I'm just borrowing your money to get through this. I'll pay you back, I promise."

I let out a cold laugh. "When you need me, I'm your sister. When you don't, I'm just some stranger named Lexi Collins. In all these seven years, have you ever once reached out to me?"

"Lexi, we're blood. Why does any of that matter? Family is family."

"Family?" My voice trembled with anger. "Do you know what I've been through out there? Do you know what it's like to be looked down on? To be so broke you can't even afford a meal? You don't know anything. All you know is how to play princess at home, using my money to go to college. And me? I should've been there too. I should've been studying composition properly. But look at me now."

Ian hung up before Evie could say another word. "What's gotten into you? Stop making a scene and go back to your room."

His expression was already full of impatience as he looked down at his phone.

Then, all of a sudden, mine vibrated. It was a bank notification. Three hundred eighty thousand had been transferred out of my account.

I rushed forward, grabbing his collar, my eyes burning red with rage. "You already set up the transfer on your way back, didn't you? Do you have any idea how long it took me to save that money? Seven years and eight months! I never took a single day off—what right do you have to touch my money?"

I was weak from the fever to begin with, and Ian shoved me down effortlessly.

"I never realized you were this unreasonable. Wasn't that money supposed to be our shared savings anyway? What's wrong with using part of it for your sister? It's disgusting that you're this cold to your own family."

As if that wasn't enough, he kicked me hard in the stomach. Tears sprang to my eyes instantly, my body reacting before my mind even could.

Ian turned and walked away without so much as a backward glance. Before leaving, he threw one last warning over his shoulder. "Stay away from your sister. I already married you here. What more do you want?"

I lay on the cold, filthy floor for half an hour before I finally managed to crawl back to my feet. The moment I stood up, nausea surged through me. I stumbled into the bathroom and retched until my vision blurred.

Only then did I finally understand what kind of people I had spent all these years loving. Letting out a bitter, self-mocking laugh, I went back to my room, grabbed the little cash I still had left and my phone, and rushed out the door.

I booked the earliest flight back home. On the way, I passed a pharmacy and gritted my teeth as I bought over a hundred dollars' worth of strong medicine. Only after swallowing it did my body finally begin to feel a little better.

I turned and looked once in the direction of the apartment. It was only five hundred yards away. And yet, last night, not one of them had been willing to walk that distance to buy medicine for me.

I called the landlord and told her I was terminating the lease. I wouldn't be renewing it. There was still a man in the apartment, and she could throw him out directly.

"Oh, sweetheart, are you sick? Your voice sounds terrible. You need to get proper rest. And don't worry about the man in your apartment. I'll throw him out for you. Is he your ex-boyfriend? I always thought there was something off about him."

I gave a faint, bitter chuckle, acknowledged softly, and after saying goodbye to the landlady, boarded the plane.

When I landed, I saw that Ian had called me seven times and sent 18 messages—every single one demanding to know when I was going back.

"What's going on? Why did the landlord kick me out?"

I ignored him. Just as I was about to leave the airport, my eyes caught the massive screen overhead.

'Rising musical genius Evie Collins releases new single Goddess, earning widespread acclaim.'

I froze in place.

If the ad hadn't lingered for five full seconds, I wouldn't have believed it. Ian had already handed the song I had finished just three days earlier… to Evie.

For the past 22 years of my life, it seemed like everything I did had been paving the way for Evie.

Now, it was time to make them pay for everything they had done to me.

"Lexi, can I come back to you? I've already cleared out everyone who wanted to harm you. No one from Skyward Entertainment will bother you again."Ian blocked my path on my way home, his face filled with desperation. He looked disheveled, a far cry from the confident, spirited man I once remembered."I trusted the wrong person back then. I know I treated you badly too. Can you let me stay by your side and make it up to you? We're husband and wife, after all."I let out a cold laugh, feeling nothing but disgust. "What were you thinking when you took my admission letter? What were you thinking when you cheated on me with Evie behind my back? What were you thinking when you transferred my money to her without my permission?"With each question, Ian lowered his head further until he didn't even dare look at me.Just as I turned to leave, he spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper. "I went to the hospital before… I have an STD. Evie gave it to me."Hearing that, I felt a quiet s

Evie instantly became the center of public backlash.'I told you from the start that Evie was never a good person. But none of you believed it. See now?''Honestly, the signs were there all along. As a so-called original artist, she lip-synced all her previous performances. It's obvious she crammed at the last minute, but couldn't handle a random pick on the spot.'Under normal circumstances, something like this might not have drawn so much attention. But this whole situation was simply too dramatic—two sisters publicly tearing each other apart for so long. And I had already submitted a huge amount of evidence before finally reclaiming the copyrights to my songs.Evie was fined and penalized, officially branded as a disgraced artist. The very next day, another scandal broke, this time involving the boss of Skyward Entertainment. Rumors spread everywhere that he had lured female artists into illegal dealings and had even assaulted some of them.I was scrolling through social media

I barely glanced at it before turning away and going back to preparing my performance.Seeing that I ignored him, Ian grew anxious. "Evie went out of her way to borrow this dress for you. Can you stop targeting her all the time? No matter how badly you treat her, she still cares about you."Hearing that, I finally snapped. "Are you still pretending not to see the truth? You two destroyed my life, and you still have the nerve to say I'm targeting her? Everything she has now was mine to begin with."Ian opened his mouth to argue, but I cut him off. "Why don't you take a closer look at that dress? The shoulder strap is hanging by a thread. The moment I step on stage, it'll probably snap, and I'll be stuck performing while clutching my shoulder. Why don't you go take care of your sweet little princess instead?"He actually reached over and touched the strap. When it snapped almost instantly, his expression turned complicated."You really think you're her fiance?" I let out a cold laug

"I had no idea my sister knew someone so powerful. You can even pull strings with Skyward Entertainment's boss?"Evie nodded as if it were nothing, then looked at me the way someone might look at an ant. "Now that you know, stop trying to play games with me.""If you're that capable, how did you end up owing 380 thousand, and even wanted to use my money to pay it off? Do you really think everyone's as stupid as you are?"Ultimately, Skyward Entertainment's boss was a businessman. A relationship built on selling herself like that wasn't going to last.Ian frowned, confused. "Why are you bringing that up? Evie was just scammed, that's all."I idly played with my phone, glanced at Evie—who was looking more and more uneasy on the sofa—and couldn't help finding the whole thing funny. "Who exactly got scammed… that's still up in the air."Almost immediately, Evie hurriedly dragged Ian away. Before leaving, she warned me not to try anything, but the 200 thousand was still sitting on the

The paparazzi I had hired the day I arrived had already sent me news the night before. Skyward Entertainment's boss had spent the night with Evie, and not long after, that aggressive 'clarification' was released. The moment netizens saw the lawyer's letter, they immediately flipped sides. Paid commenters flooded in, calling me a fraud—a wolf in sheep's clothing who had tricked everyone into thinking I was honest, only to end up cheating even my own sister.Of course, there were also a few voices telling people to stay rational, saying defamation wasn't something to take lightly and that everyone should wait for the truth before jumping to conclusions. But after that, I disappeared for a while. On the songwriting platform, haters took the opportunity to swarm in, filling the comment sections under my songs with insults.About a month passed. Everyone, including Evie, seemed to think I had given up. That was when I released a new song.I had never received formal training, and I had

"Evie Collins is seriously impressive. She's only written four or five songs so far, and every single one's been a hit.""Yeah, but I heard from some paparazzi that her private life isn't exactly clean.""Oh, come on. Paparazzi will say anything for money. She looks that sweet—there's no way she'd do something like that."A few people passed by, pointing and chatting about the face on the billboard.I had spent so many years overseas that I was out of touch with what was happening back home. Of course, that was partly because Ian had made sure to keep me in the dark.My phone buzzed. It was a call from my parents. I didn't answer. A moment later, a message came through.'If you dare come back and harm your sister, we'll drag you to prison ourselves, even if it kills us!'Then more messages followed, one after another, all saying the same thing—that I was not worthy of being a daughter of the Collins family.I didn't bother responding. Instead, I went straight to a phone shop, g
