Chapter 1

After the email went out, Lily turned her phone sideways and aimed it at me again.

“That last part doesn’t count. Let’s get a better ending.”

She pointed at the ring on the table.

“Put it back on and give Rowan a hug. Otherwise, when people see the video, they’ll think you two actually broke up.”

“Then don’t post it.”

Lily’s smile froze for a second.

“I spent all afternoon setting this up.”

Mom adjusted her shoulder strap for her.

“Everyone knows it was a joke. You’re the only one taking it seriously. It’s embarrassing.”

I picked up my napkin and wiped a bit of cream off the back of my hand. There were still nail marks where Mom had held me down.

Rowan pulled out the chair beside him.

“All right, no more filming.”

I looked up at him.

“She’s pissed right now. It won’t look good on camera,” he went on. “We’ll shoot it again at home.”

Lily finally put her phone down.

“Then you’re in charge of calming her down.”

“Got it.”

Rowan picked up the ring and held it out by my left hand.

I pulled my hand back into my lap.

“Put it away for now.”

He let out a laugh, put the ring back in its box, and shoved it into my purse.

“There. I’ll hold on to it for you. Stop throwing a fit.”

The waiter brought dessert.

On top of the almond cake were chocolate nameplates with our names.

Lily reached over and snapped off my name.

“This one’s too long. It’s blocking my picture.”

She popped the half piece of chocolate into her mouth and raised her phone.

“Rowan, move a little closer.”

He got up and went over.

The cake in front of me was left with only his name.

As the dinner broke up, Dad handed the car keys to Rowan.

“You take Lily. She can’t walk well in heels.”

Mom handed me a few gift bags.

“Come back with us and carry these.”

I was wearing heels tonight, too.

To match the dress Rowan had picked, they were half a size smaller than my usual.

I set the bags back on the table and changed into the spare flats in my purse.

Rowan saw and frowned.

“The party isn’t over yet.”

“My feet hurt.”

“Can’t you hold out for ten more minutes?”

I stopped a waiter and asked him to call me a car.

Mom lowered her voice.

“We have a car. Why are you making a fuss?”

“I want to go back first.”

She was about to say more when Lily called her over to look at photos by the door.

Mom let go of my arm and went.

In the car, Noah replied to my email.

“Glad to have your confirmation. The on-site residency prep starts in three days, and you’ll need to arrive that day. Does that work for you?”

I stared at the last line, then typed, “Yes.”

Back in my room, I took the document pouch down from the top shelf of my closet.

My passport was tucked next to my School of Architecture diploma.

After the engagement, I’d put all that away and cleared off my desk for wedding sample books.

There was still a half-edited menu on the desk.

Rowan didn’t like fish, Lily didn’t eat mushrooms, and Dad wanted the soup changed.

I’d filled the margins with revision notes.

I closed the menu, put it in a drawer, and made room to go over the project materials.

A little before eleven, Mom pushed the door open.

“Dress fitting tomorrow. Meet at the house at eleven. Don’t make everyone wait.”

She saw the passport on the desk.

“What are you looking for that for?”

“I need it.”

“The honeymoon isn’t for a while. Focus on the wedding first.”

After the door closed, I sent my ID photos to the project assistant and filled out the housing application.

The last question asked whether any family members would be accompanying me.

I checked “No.”

Then I opened the transit page and looked up the northbound train for three days from now.

When the research project ended, I received an offer to stay on with the team.It wasn't Noah's decision alone.I submitted an updated portfolio, did an interview, and renegotiated my role and salary. On the day I signed, I read the contract twice. The housing section said graduate dorms would no longer be provided.I rented a small apartment in town.Second floor, a kitchen big enough for a dining table, and a window where my old models fit perfectly. On moving day, Noah drove me over in two trips. The last box was heavy. He asked what was in it."Books.""You brought this many with you?""Two more boxes got mailed later."He laughed a little and set the box by the wall.By the time we finished assembling the bookshelf, it was past lunch. He asked if I wanted to grab something at the corner."I think I want to be alone today.""Okay."He tightened the last screw and put his tools away."See you Monday."No follow-up questions, no disappointment on display.I walked him downstairs, the

A month before the project ended, Mom asked if she could come visit. She wrote through Dad's email. She didn't buy tickets on her own, and she didn't ask me to pick them up at the station."If you'd rather not, we won't come."I left the email for two days. Then I replied with a time.Saturday afternoon, two to three.A café near the station. They arrived before I did.Mom draped her coat over the back of her chair, both hands around her cup. A paper bag sat in front of Dad. When he saw me, he stood up first, then sat back down.I took the seat across from them.Mom looked at me, and her eyes went red almost immediately."Is it hard here?""Sometimes.""You've lost weight.""My weight hasn't changed."She blinked, then looked down and touched the rim of her cup.In the past, when she said I'd lost weight, I'd go along with it—talk about being busy, not having time to eat—give her a chance to pile food on my plate and steer around the unpleasantness. This time, I didn't.Dad pushed the

In spring, we started on the renovation plan for the old community center. The original entrance had four steps. Water pooled there when it rained, and elderly people had to hold the railing and walk slowly. We proposed three options. At the first residents' meeting, a woman in a wheelchair pointed at my drawing and asked me:"How much farther is it if you go around by the ramp?"I gave her the distance. She shook her head."Have you ever tried going through it in a wheelchair?"The next day, I borrowed a wheelchair and went along the route with a colleague. The corner was too narrow. The door was too heavy. When we got back, we redrew it.Around that time, I was so busy I didn't have time to check my blocked messages every day.Occasionally I'd think of Rowan—when I saw a similar car on the street, or when a café played a song I'd heard before.I still felt the ache.Once, I dreamed I was back at the engagement dinner. Everyone was laughing, and I couldn't stand up no matter how hard

After winter set in, Dad sent me an email. He wrote very formally.Everything at home was fine, and Mom was in good health. My things hadn't been touched. My room was still kept as it was.Below that was a photo. The closet was full of new clothes, and there was a new computer on the desk."If you need anything, just say so."I didn't reply. Two days later, he sent another."Is it because we've always favored Lily?"I stared at that line, closed my laptop, and went to the surveying room.I didn't open it again until evening. He'd added a long paragraph.About what happened when I was nine—he'd asked Mom.That day, they'd thought I was at a friend's house. When they got home and found me sitting on the steps, he'd gotten angry first, asking why I hadn't gone to a neighbor's.Mom said I'd been wearing a coat, with a gift box on my knees. It was a birthday present I'd prepared for Lily.Dad wrote in the email:"That's something I've always remembered differently from you."I read it twice

Rowan found the college where the project was based. My name was on the website, but not the site address. He called the office and asked if they could pass along a message. The assistant checked with me first."He says he's your fiancé.""Not anymore.""Do you want me to reply for you?""No need."She nodded and closed the door. That afternoon, I got an email from Rowan at a new address. The subject line was: I'm coming to find you.The body was long.He said he'd gone back to my room and seen what I'd left behind. He said he hadn't known before how much I'd done for the wedding. At the end, he said that if I'd just see him, the wedding could be postponed. I could choose the location and the format.I replied with three lines."The engagement is over. Not postponed.Don't come to the site. Don't contact my colleagues. From now on, only outstanding payments go through this email."After I sent it, I made a folder and moved his email into it.At the end of the month, I transferred the l

In my second week, I made a mistake.I entered a set of window measurements backward and only caught it during review.Noah put the drawing on my desk and pointed it out."This needs to be remeasured.""I'm sorry.""Can you finish it this afternoon?""Yes."I took the equipment and headed out. At the top of the stairs, I turned back."Will this affect the schedule?""It'll delay some of the drafting, so we'll fix it today."His tone was even.No laugh, no sigh.I nodded and went downstairs to measure it again. When I got back, Noah had already organized everyone else's records. He took my data, checked it, and signed off on the form."Done."Just that one word.I sat back down at my desk, still gripping my pencil. In the past, whenever I made a mistake, I'd first have to guess how many people knew, whether it would get brought up, whether Lily would mimic me at the next dinner. This time, no one mentioned it again. That night, I got a call from an unknown number. It was Mom."Don't han
