Chapter 3

Autor: AlphaGo
When Rowan showed up with breakfast, I was taking the engagement photo off the wall.

He steadied the frame.

“You don’t need to bring that. I have one at my place.”

I turned the frame face down and put it in the box.

“Still mad?” He handed me a coffee. “Lily was scared you’d really cut her off. She kept asking me what to do last night.”

“Scared of what?”

“That you won’t talk to her.”

“She’s not the one whose fiancé got swapped out in public.”

Rowan sighed.

“She likes to mess around. It’s not like this is news to you. You’re not going to hold it against her forever, are you?”

I looked at him.

“Before the dinner, did you know what she was going to do?”

“I had some idea.”

“How much?”

He set the coffee down.

“She asked me how to get a reaction out of you. I said the wedding was your weak spot, so that was the surest way in.”

The corner of the frame dug into my palm.

“Because I spent a year planning it?”

“Yeah.”

He answered fast.

“What’s the point of joking about something you don’t care about?”

I looked down at the photo.

On the day of the shoot, he was two hours late. I was afraid he’d be tired, so I didn’t even mention the extra set of photos I wanted.

“Did you know about all those other jokes, too?”

Rowan didn’t answer. Then Lily’s voice came from the doorway.

“Of course. He’s the one who told me you were wearing that white dress last year.”

“Lily.”

Rowan’s voice dropped.

She leaned against the doorframe.

“What? She’s asking, isn’t she?”

That time we went to Rowan’s parents’ house for dinner, I wore a dress I’d saved up two months to buy.

Lily drew a heart on the back with lipstick.

No one told me until I was already at the table.

Later, I hid in the bathroom. Rowan coaxed me through the door, saying Lily was too immature and that he’d protect me next time.

“You even helped me wipe it off that day.”

I looked at him.

“You said you didn’t know who did it.”

He avoided my eyes.

“I just didn’t want you two to fight.”

“So you watched her do it, then came to comfort me?”

“Claire, do you have to make it sound so ugly?”

Lily cut in.

“See? I told you she’d bring up old stuff.”

I put the last photo in the box.

“I won’t bring it up anymore.”

Rowan let out a breath and reached out to hug me.

“That’s better. I’ll reshoot the wedding photos with you. And stop going after Lily all the time.”

I pushed his hand away and handed the coffee back.

“Take it with you. I need to pack.”

He glanced at the suitcase.

“Let me know before you move in tomorrow. I’ll save you a parking spot.”

After they left, I called the wedding planner.

“Cancel everything—the venue, the photography, and the reception.”

She confirmed it again.

“You’ll lose part of the deposit if you cancel. Are you sure?”

“I’m sure.”

I’d always managed the wedding planning account. Rowan had signed the authorization once at the beginning and then couldn’t even be bothered to remember the password.

I submitted the cancellation forms and removed our couple registration from the account.

The page said the orders would be verified in twenty-four hours and cancellation confirmations would be sent to both parties.

I signed.

Then I put his spare key, supplementary card, and engagement ring into a paper bag.

There was a necklace by the desk.

Lily had returned it at some point. The silver clasp was bent out of shape.

I put it in a jewelry box by itself and packed it in my suitcase.

Her voice came from outside the door.

“We’re having barbecue tonight. Mom bought your favorite beef ribs.”

“Okay.”

“And no going out tomorrow night. I’ve got a new thing planned.”

She ran downstairs without waiting for my answer.

I sealed the paper bag and wrote Rowan’s name on it.

My phone lit up with a ticket reminder.

Ten a.m. tomorrow. Departure.

When the research project ended, I received an offer to stay on with the team.It wasn't Noah's decision alone.I submitted an updated portfolio, did an interview, and renegotiated my role and salary. On the day I signed, I read the contract twice. The housing section said graduate dorms would no longer be provided.I rented a small apartment in town.Second floor, a kitchen big enough for a dining table, and a window where my old models fit perfectly. On moving day, Noah drove me over in two trips. The last box was heavy. He asked what was in it."Books.""You brought this many with you?""Two more boxes got mailed later."He laughed a little and set the box by the wall.By the time we finished assembling the bookshelf, it was past lunch. He asked if I wanted to grab something at the corner."I think I want to be alone today.""Okay."He tightened the last screw and put his tools away."See you Monday."No follow-up questions, no disappointment on display.I walked him downstairs, the

A month before the project ended, Mom asked if she could come visit. She wrote through Dad's email. She didn't buy tickets on her own, and she didn't ask me to pick them up at the station."If you'd rather not, we won't come."I left the email for two days. Then I replied with a time.Saturday afternoon, two to three.A café near the station. They arrived before I did.Mom draped her coat over the back of her chair, both hands around her cup. A paper bag sat in front of Dad. When he saw me, he stood up first, then sat back down.I took the seat across from them.Mom looked at me, and her eyes went red almost immediately."Is it hard here?""Sometimes.""You've lost weight.""My weight hasn't changed."She blinked, then looked down and touched the rim of her cup.In the past, when she said I'd lost weight, I'd go along with it—talk about being busy, not having time to eat—give her a chance to pile food on my plate and steer around the unpleasantness. This time, I didn't.Dad pushed the

In spring, we started on the renovation plan for the old community center. The original entrance had four steps. Water pooled there when it rained, and elderly people had to hold the railing and walk slowly. We proposed three options. At the first residents' meeting, a woman in a wheelchair pointed at my drawing and asked me:"How much farther is it if you go around by the ramp?"I gave her the distance. She shook her head."Have you ever tried going through it in a wheelchair?"The next day, I borrowed a wheelchair and went along the route with a colleague. The corner was too narrow. The door was too heavy. When we got back, we redrew it.Around that time, I was so busy I didn't have time to check my blocked messages every day.Occasionally I'd think of Rowan—when I saw a similar car on the street, or when a café played a song I'd heard before.I still felt the ache.Once, I dreamed I was back at the engagement dinner. Everyone was laughing, and I couldn't stand up no matter how hard

After winter set in, Dad sent me an email. He wrote very formally.Everything at home was fine, and Mom was in good health. My things hadn't been touched. My room was still kept as it was.Below that was a photo. The closet was full of new clothes, and there was a new computer on the desk."If you need anything, just say so."I didn't reply. Two days later, he sent another."Is it because we've always favored Lily?"I stared at that line, closed my laptop, and went to the surveying room.I didn't open it again until evening. He'd added a long paragraph.About what happened when I was nine—he'd asked Mom.That day, they'd thought I was at a friend's house. When they got home and found me sitting on the steps, he'd gotten angry first, asking why I hadn't gone to a neighbor's.Mom said I'd been wearing a coat, with a gift box on my knees. It was a birthday present I'd prepared for Lily.Dad wrote in the email:"That's something I've always remembered differently from you."I read it twice

Rowan found the college where the project was based. My name was on the website, but not the site address. He called the office and asked if they could pass along a message. The assistant checked with me first."He says he's your fiancé.""Not anymore.""Do you want me to reply for you?""No need."She nodded and closed the door. That afternoon, I got an email from Rowan at a new address. The subject line was: I'm coming to find you.The body was long.He said he'd gone back to my room and seen what I'd left behind. He said he hadn't known before how much I'd done for the wedding. At the end, he said that if I'd just see him, the wedding could be postponed. I could choose the location and the format.I replied with three lines."The engagement is over. Not postponed.Don't come to the site. Don't contact my colleagues. From now on, only outstanding payments go through this email."After I sent it, I made a folder and moved his email into it.At the end of the month, I transferred the l

In my second week, I made a mistake.I entered a set of window measurements backward and only caught it during review.Noah put the drawing on my desk and pointed it out."This needs to be remeasured.""I'm sorry.""Can you finish it this afternoon?""Yes."I took the equipment and headed out. At the top of the stairs, I turned back."Will this affect the schedule?""It'll delay some of the drafting, so we'll fix it today."His tone was even.No laugh, no sigh.I nodded and went downstairs to measure it again. When I got back, Noah had already organized everyone else's records. He took my data, checked it, and signed off on the form."Done."Just that one word.I sat back down at my desk, still gripping my pencil. In the past, whenever I made a mistake, I'd first have to guess how many people knew, whether it would get brought up, whether Lily would mimic me at the next dinner. This time, no one mentioned it again. That night, I got a call from an unknown number. It was Mom."Don't han
