Chapter 3

Author: Redleaves
That evening, footsteps echoed outside the door.

Cecilia came bounding into the hall first, leading a golden griffin by its reins.

"Lorne, look at my griffin! Isn't it amazing?"

Lorne rushed to meet her, his eyes gleaming. "A beauty with a top-tier war beast. A perfect match."

My father and brother followed behind, carrying domain deeds and enchanted cases.

My mother casually shoved a dusty cloth bundle into my hands.

"Elaia, this is the free cloak that came with our purchase. I saved it especially for you."

I unfolded the cloak. The edges were frayed, and the protective enchantments on the inside were faded and incomplete.

A defective thing like this couldn't block dragon breath, let alone keep me warm.

"Thank you." I folded it calmly.

My father nodded approvingly. "That's our sensible Elaia. You're not going to get ahead on your looks, so your clothes only need to be serviceable."

I looked away.

Was I undemanding, or had they simply never given me a choice?

Cecilia noticed my silence. Her eyes welled with tears at once.

"You don't like the cloak, do you?"

She wiped a tear, looking guilty, and pushed the griffin toward me.

"Here, take the griffin. Father already gave me the three dragon crystal mines on the east side, and our brother sent me two chests of gold coins, so I don't need one more gift."

The hall went silent.

My father's smile faded.

I had never heard of those three mines.

Before the investiture, they had told me that the lord's heavy taxes this year meant they could only give me a single low-grade copper mine.

My father frowned. "Lord Vale has his eye on Cecilia. She's representing the family at the banquet, so of course she needs a few mines to look the part."

My brother tilted his chin up. "Those two chests of gold are for Cecilia's jewelry. You're plain-looking, so jewelry would be wasted on you."

My mother quickly chimed in, "Right, Elaia, don't overthink it. We'll make it up to you later."

"Later." Always "later." I had been waiting since I was seven. "Later" never came.

"Don't bother."

My voice was calm in a way that sounded foreign to me.

Cecilia kept pushing the griffin toward me, but her gaze had settled on the pendant at my neck, the Heartscale.

She clutched the reins tight, voice catching.

"Please don't be angry. I'll trade you the griffin for your pendant, okay?

"I don't mean anything by it. It's just that Lord Vale mentioned the pendant was beautiful and would suit me."

I took half a step back, my hand instinctively closing around the pendant.

The Heartscale was made from my grandmother's own dragon scale. It was the only thing she had left me.

After the winter hunt when I was nine, it was my grandmother who stayed by my side while I lay critically injured, using the pendant to suppress the frost damage tearing through my body.

She had stroked my face gently and whispered, "My Elaia. Someone should be looking after you, too."

All these years, it had rested against my chest, a reminder that someone had once treasured me.

"No."

It was the first time I had ever outright refused Cecilia.

Cecilia cried harder.

My mother hurried to mediate. "It's not even worth much. Since your sister likes it, just give it to her."

"And don't take her griffin. I'll buy you a new enchanted necklace."

My brother stepped in front of Cecilia. "Stop being unreasonable. With your looks, do you even deserve a necklace like that?"

I backed away, clutching the pendant, until I bumped into someone.

Lorne.

He gave me a smile, and while I was off guard, unclasped the pendant and tossed it to Cecilia.

He pulled a playful face. "Relax. You're not giving it away. Just let Cecilia borrow it for a while."

Everyone assumed Lorne was just teasing me. No one stopped him.

I stared at Lorne's careless face, biting down hard on my lower lip.

The taste of iron filled my mouth.

He knew exactly what the pendant meant to me. He had once sworn he would protect me the way my grandmother had. Now it all seemed like a joke.

Cecilia put on the pendant and smiled through her tears. "Thank you, Lorne!"

Lorne gazed at her admiringly. "I knew it. This necklace suits you best."

Everyone gathered around Cecilia. No one saw my knuckles turning white.

I went back to my room and locked the door behind me.

I unclipped the Rayne family crest and threw it into the fireplace along with the ruined cloak.

I watched the flames swallow them both and burn them to ash.

One year later, the Northern Court held an investiture ceremony for its new Knight Commander. When I walked into the great hall in my silver-white wing armor, every Frost Dragon Knight rose to their feet.My name was first on the investiture roster hanging high in the center of the hall.[Northern Knight Commander: Elaia.][Independent Domain: Starfrost Territory.][Personal Guard: First Frost Dragon Knight Squadron.]Not someone's sister. Not someone's attendant.Severel placed the Knight Commander's token into my hands himself."You earned this through your own valor."I accepted the token and led my knights out of the hall. After the ceremony, Alden gave me the customary briefing on the territories. All of the Rayne family's mines had been auctioned. Every last coin of compensation had been deposited into my account. The auction list included the three dragon crystal mines my father had once said I "had no use for."After my father was stripped of his lordship, the family council el

I had barely made it down the steps of the Central Dragon Court when Lorne came running after me.His face was white. His right arm was still wrapped in thick bandages, and he carried a large mithril case against his chest."Elaia, wait."He blocked my path and fumbled the case open."This is the gilt-steel wing armor I had made for you. Everything I owe you, I'll make up for."Fire magic rippled across the armor's surface. Cecilia's favorite rose pattern was etched on the inside, and the armor had been made entirely to her measurements.I glanced at it once."This is Cecilia's."Lorne froze."That's impossible. The attendant must have grabbed the wrong one.""My core is frost-aligned. I hate the rose pattern. And my wingspan is an inch wider than Cecilia's."I looked up at him."You used to know all of this."Three years ago, he had remembered that I couldn't eat meat from fire-aligned beasts, that my core ached faintly every winter, and that he should save me the shaded spot on the t

On the day of the public hearing, the gallery of the Central Dragon Court was packed with lords and knights from across the realm. The moment I walked in, my father slammed the family warrant on the table."Elaia, you are my daughter! Your bloodline and your power were cultivated by the Rayne family. You have no right to defect!"My mother reached for me, eyes red."Come home with me. We raised you for eighteen years. Even if we played favorites sometimes, you can't treat your own parents like enemies."My brother scoffed."The Starfrost Tower, domain, and training resources you have now should be turned over to the family for redistribution."Cecilia clutched my Heartscale pendant, her voice faint."I've already forgiven you for running away during the investiture. Just come back, and we'll still be a family."Lorne stood with them."Elaia, stop making a scene. We're still bonding next year. I'll take care of you for the rest of your life."I looked at them and laughed."Since you all

Snow was falling across the Northern Territory when the Royal Vessel touched down.I descended the gangway, and the Frost Dragon Knights waiting in formation saluted in unison. The court's head steward, Alden Pierce, placed a silver token into my hands."Lady Elaia, Starfrost Tower Three has been prepared for you. Beginning today, you will receive the highest stipend, training resources, and personal guard allotment available."I held the token, warmth tingling at my fingertips. In the Rayne household, everyone had told me I wasn't pretty, didn't know how to please people, and couldn't transform, so I didn't deserve anything better. But here, no one asked whether I was sweet-tempered. No one told me to prove my worth first. They judged by bloodline and ability, nothing else.Alden led me through Starfrost Tower, introducing the library, training grounds, and guard quarters one by one."If anything is not to your liking, feel free to change it."I asked without thinking, "Don't I need t

[Lorne's Perspective]Lorne stared at his charred right arm, his face white as bone.He clenched his jaw and turned to look at Cecilia, unconscious on the other side of the altar. Her dragon form had collapsed. Frost covered her entire body. Her core was likely damaged.Lorne dragged himself forward, hoisted her onto his shoulder with his left arm, and staggered toward the exit.He hadn't taken two steps before Envoy Hart blocked his path."Move!" Lorne spat blood, his expression feral. "I'm taking her to the Grand Cathedral for a priest!""You enabled the unauthorized use of essence blood."Hart removed his Sworn Knight silver ring. "Your Sworn Knight status is revoked, your Black Dragon Knight authority suspended. You are under investigation."Lorne swayed. The last trace of color drained from his face."Then let Cecilia's parents, or her brother, take her to the Cathedral...""Cecilia's parents and brother are also under investigation."Hart cut him off. "Cecilia stays with me. You

As the vessel rose into the sky, the bells of the investiture ceremony rang in the distance.A public crystal in the cabin was broadcasting the Rayne family's ceremony live.I let out a cold laugh. They wouldn't spare me a single mine, yet they had spent a fortune broadcasting the investiture. On the crystal, Cecilia stood in pristine white ceremonial robes, receiving her title.Lorne stood at her side as Sworn Knight, a red silk ribbon wound around his black dragon lance, the mark of his oath to protect her.No one had noticed I was gone. The final stage of the ceremony would determine whether Cecilia could complete her full dragon transformation. One by one, the mages entered the array, but the stabilizer position assigned to me remained empty. The guests began to whisper."Isn't Miss Elaia supposed to be the stabilizer? Where is she?""Come to think of it, I haven't seen her all evening."My mother's expression froze.Dorian tried to reach me again and again. Every message went unan
