POV: Odalys

The fuel problem had not gone away, and neither had the man who knew where our cameras were.

We held a council that night around the long steel table. Ingrid had been admitted to the adult conversation by general consent, and Pim had admitted herself by sitting under the table. Thaddeus laid out the figures. Ilsabet laid out the ledger. Ferran laid out, with great reluctance, his opinion that we should pack up and move.

"Move where?" said Greta, practically.

"I don't know. Anywhere

POV: Odalys Nobody liked the plan, which was how I knew it was the right one."We go to the depot," I said, with a map spread across the long table and a mug of Ferran's dreadful chicory going cold at my elbow. "Not all of us. Three of us, in Thaddeus's truck, in daylight. We fill drums. We come home.""Three," Ferran said flatly."Me, Thaddeus, and Sergeant Cross."The quiet that followed had a texture to it, the thick gray weight of a very large number of objections waiting their turn. Ilsabet was staring at the ledger. Greta had put down her fork. Even Pim, sitting cross-legged on a chair with a chunk of bread and jam, had stopped chewing to follow the conversation."You," said Ferran. "Going out. Into that.""Yes.""You are the one person in this building we cannot lose.""And I'm the one who can carry forty drums of diesel home without a truck." I laid my palm flat on the map. "Ferran. I can't ask Thaddeus to fill a hundred barrels and roll them one at a time through an escape t

POV: OdalysI did not wake Ferran.I stood in the corridor outside the quarantine ward until the voice in the rucksack went quiet, and the little green light stopped blinking, and the man on the bed let his hand uncurl. Then I walked back to the control room and sat down in the dark with my arms wrapped around my knees. I sat there until the shaft above the vault turned from black to charcoal to the thin gray of morning. What I wanted to do was simple. I wanted to go back down the corridor, take the rucksack, and throw it through the airlock into the rain. I wanted to wake the soldier with a rifle at his throat. I wanted to ask him, in a very quiet voice, who had been calling. But I had done one thing in my first life that I had never been able to forgive myself for, and it was acting on a certainty. I had been so sure of Lorcan. I had been so sure of Pia. Certainty had walked me into a stairwell with my back to the people who would lock the door.So I waited. And at seven, when Ferra

Anywhere that isn't being watched.""Every place is being watched," I said. "That's the point. A man who sat on our hill for days without a single camera catching his face doesn't need us to hold still. He's already seen how this place works. If we run, we lose the walls and the well and the garden. And we still don't know what he wants.""He wants you," Ferran said bluntly."Maybe. But he hasn't tried to take me.""Yet."I rubbed my forehead. "Then we stay. And we get ready."Nobody said anything. Pim h

POV: Odalys The solar panels failed three days after Ambrose came.It happened with no drama at all. At six in the morning, the power gauge in the control room dropped from green to amber, and Thaddeus, who had been studying it with the expression of a man watching a pot refuse to boil, set down his coffee and said, "That's not right."An hour later, he had pulled the schematic, and an hour after that, he was sitting at the long table with his enormous hands wrapped around a mug, shaking his head."The rain did it," he said. "Or the tremor. Maybe both. Three of the eight panels have cracked glass, and two more have chewed cables. We're running on the generators for everything now, and that's a problem, because we're burning diesel at a rate I do not like.""How bad?" I asked."Nineteen days of fuel. Maybe twenty-two if everyone stops taking showers."Pim, who was drawing on the back of a ration box at the end of the table, looked up with alarm. "I like showers.""I know, sweet pea."

POV: OdalysThe chime came on the ninth night, just after midnight.I was in the control room, because I was always in the control room by then. The others had gone to bed. Ferran had taken to dozing in a chair by the radio with a blanket over his knees, and he was snoring when the sound rang out, a clear, polite note, the north hatch lever being pulled. He woke up with a snort and nearly fell off the chair."Cameras," I said.On the north wall monitor, crouched against the third boulder in a thin gray rain, was a man I recognized. It took me a moment. He had changed a great deal in nine days. His expensive coat was ripped from collar to hem and black with mud. One shoe was missing. A long scratch ran down his cheek, crusted with dried blood, and his tall, stooped frame had folded in on itself like a collapsed tent. But there was no mistaking those slow, tired, intelligent eyes."Ambrose Whitlock," I said."The husband?" Ferran came up behind me, rubbing his face. "The one from the w

POV: Odalys We buried him at dawn, in the rain, on the north side of the hill.It was not a large grave. Thaddeus dug it himself with a borrowed shovel, in a patch of soft earth behind the third boulder, while Ferran and I stood a few yards off, watching the treeline with a rifle apiece. Greta wrapped her brother in the quilt from his own bed, and the two of them lowered him down together. Nobody said very much. When the earth had covered him, Thaddeus set his hard hat on the mound, took it off again, and put it on his own head."He would have laughed at the hat," Greta said."He would," said Thaddeus. And for a moment, in the rain, the two of them almost smiled. We went back inside, one at a time, through the airlock. I held the inner door for last, and when the bolts slid home I felt, unexpectedly, the familiar, steady comfort of being sealed away from the world. It was not a comfort I wanted. But I had it, and I took it.I had expected the next few days to be silent. They weren't.
