Chapter 5

Author: Binky Babe
When the call finally connected, Bianca surprisingly didn't lose her temper. She answered every single question from the doctor with genuine care.

Hanging up, she said, "They’ll land tomorrow night at eight."

The tight knot in my chest finally loosened.

"Thank you."

She looked a bit unnatural, rubbing her nose awkwardly.

"If you really want to thank me, sign the divorce papers and let Connor and I be together."

I looked at her. "I'll say it again. When the real Bianca comes back, if she wants a divorce, I'll sign."

As I walked toward the door, I heard Connor lower his voice.

"Why didn't you set terms just now? He’s desperate. If you forced him to sign first, he would've done it."

"A life is on the line! You expect me to blackmail him with that?" Bianca’s tone turned ice-cold instantly. "Do you really think I’m that heartless?"

"I didn't mean it like that. I was just worried you’d get taken advantage of."

"Even so, you don't kick someone when they’re down."

I didn't turn back.

At the very least, eighteen-year-old Bianca wasn't entirely rotten.

Around noon the next day, right as I was about to call Bianca to ask her to visit Grandma before the surgery, Connor arrived at the hospital first.

He handed me the divorce papers.

Once again, it demanded I walk away with nothing.

“Bianca said the visiting surgical team will only arrive on schedule if you sign this."

I looked up at him. "That's impossible."

He let out a quiet chuckle. "Feel free to call and ask her. But right now, she listens to everything I say.

"Elliot, I don't need her to threaten you in person. All I need is a way to make sure that team never shows up, and that's enough."

He glanced toward the emergency room. "Are you willing to gamble your grandmother's life on this?"

The warmth drained from my fingers, inch by inch.

Bianca hadn't had this attitude last night. Yet Connor clearly knew how to pull her strings.

I couldn't afford to gamble.

"I’ll sign."

I took the pen.

"On one condition. Tell Bianca to come to the hospital today and see my grandmother before surgery."

Connor agreed without hesitation.

I glanced at the date. Past midnight tonight, the real Bianca would be back.

The surgery was scheduled for eight tomorrow morning. There was still time.

I put my name on the page.

I waited all the way until nine at night, but Bianca never showed up.

There was no word from the surgical team scheduled to arrive at eight, either.

I dialed her number repeatedly, but nobody picked up.

The text feed flashed into view:

[The teen version and the main guy are popping champagne at the villa right now to celebrate the divorce!]

[Are they finally sealing the deal tonight? OMG!]

Over by the operating room, a doctor ran out with hurried steps.

"Where’s Dr. Carter? The patient's condition is deteriorating rapidly! We can't wait any longer!"

I called Bianca one more time.

Still no answer.

Left with no choice, I scrambled to contact hospitals and transferred departments myself to locate Dr. Carter.

Finally, the voice on the line said, "Dr. Carter's team canceled their trip earlier today around one in the afternoon."

One in the afternoon.

Shortly after I had signed the papers.

My hand shook so violently the phone nearly slipped from my grip.

The doctor looked at me. "Mr. Morgan, we can't wait."

My voice trembled uncontrollably. "Then please perform the surgery yourselves."

When the consent form was handed over, my signature was a crooked, jagged mess.

After Grandma was wheeled inside, my legs buckled, and I slid down the wall onto the cold floor.

This time, the floating text went silent for a very long time.

Only a single line slowly drifted past:

[I suddenly feel kind of sorry for the side character.]

The electronic clock on the hallway wall ticked past midnight.

The operating room door swung open. The surgeon pulled off his mask and gave me a slow shake of his head.

In that fraction of a second, the world went completely silent.

I tried to stand up, but my legs had no strength left.

The text feed in front of my eyes suddenly went wild:

[Holy crap! The real female lead?!]

[How did she come back inside her eighteen-year-old body?!]

[It really is her!]

I turned my head stiffly.

At the far end of the hallway, a young girl was running frantically toward me.

It was Bianca’s eighteen-year-old body.

Yet the look in her eyes as she stared at me was terrifyingly familiar.

Bianca threw herself in front of me, her eyes bloodshot, her breath ragged.

"Hubby!"

"I used to think that loving someone meant giving them the absolute best of everything," Bianca said."Handling all their problems, shielding them from trouble, paving their path smoothly for them."It took me until now to realize that some things can't be done for someone else."I remained silent."Elliot.""Yeah?""In the future, if you want my help, just tell me. If you don't say anything, I won't make decisions for you anymore."I stared out the window at the streetlights sweeping past us into the distance."Hold yourself to what you said today.""I will."…Six months later, Vivian asked me out for dinner.Halfway through the meal, she slid a set of keys across the table toward me."Bianca wanted me to give these to you."I glanced down at them. "What are they?""For the villa.""Why didn't she give them to me herself?"Vivian scoffed softly. "She said if she gave them to you, you wouldn't take them."I couldn't help but laugh. She was right.Vivian continued,

In the past, as long as I opened my mouth, Bianca would have had all the relevant files delivered to my hands within half an hour, even making a neat list of exactly who I needed to contact.I picked up my phone, then set it back down. The next day, I reached out to three former colleagues myself and took them out for dinner. The problem was solved all the same. Not as fast as it would have been with Bianca's help. However, it wasn't nearly as hard as I had imagined either. After that, the thought of reaching out to Bianca crossed my mind less and less.It wasn't that I didn't need her.It was just that I finally remembered I used to solve my own problems, too. When the deal for the Westside Project was officially closed, Gavin gave me a call."Sir, they ended up giving us a two percent concession at the end," he said.I let out a soft laugh. "Don't call me Sir anymore.""Habit of a lifetime." Gavin chuckled. "Miss Bennett said that since you did the initial risk assessment f

"I used to think that was great," I continued, "You handled everything for me, so all I had to do was focus on living my life."I raised my head to look at Bianca."But the day that lock wouldn't open, I realized something terrifying. The second you're not around, I don't even know where I stand."Bianca's throat worked as she swallowed hard. "It was my...""It wasn't your fault," I cut in."It's not wrong that you treated me well. I was the one who handed over too much of myself."I zipped my suitcase shut."So now, I want to take it back."Bianca searched my face for a long time."Does that include our marriage?"My hands froze on the handle. That was probably the first time since she returned that she had asked me something so direct.I didn't answer right away."That agreement doesn't count," she said softly, "If you genuinely want a divorce, we can sit down and negotiate properly."We'll divide the joint property according to the law, and you won't lose out on a sing

"There are also multiple clauses in this agreement that attempt to divide joint marital property," the lawyer said, "We'll be taking care of those shortly."Bianca nodded. "Recover everything that needs to be recovered."After a beat, she added, "And don't you dare touch anything under Elliot's name or his premarital assets."The lawyer blinked, caught off guard. "Of course."Bianca's expression remained dark. "I was reminding myself."Gavin lowered his head, trying hard to hide a smile.I almost laughed out loud, but figuring it wasn't the right time, I quickly turned my head away.Bianca saw me. Her tense expression finally softened just a bit.The last item left to handle was the pink diamond.Connor refused to give it back. Yet the very next day, Bianca invited me out again."The third time, I was the one who wanted to see him," Bianca continued, "The fourth time too. And every single time after that."She locked eyes with Connor."Don't flatter yourself into thinking someone else's six years revolved around your face."The glowing livestream commentary floating in front of me froze, dead in its tracks.[Wait... So who were we even rooting for this whole time?][Hold on, who was actually the rebound here?]I didn't feel any surge of victory. I just felt bone-weary."Bianca."Her head snapped toward me instantly."Stop causing a scene in the hospital."She paused, taking a breath. "Okay."Connor opened his mouth to say something, but eighteen-year-old Bianca yanked her arm out of his grasp before he could get a word out."I told you yesterday, you don't get to use people's lives to blackmail him," she said. For the first time, that wild, reckless spark in the teenage girl's eyes was completel

Another message sat right below it.[Miss Bennett, since the family changed their treatment plan, we’ll cancel this trip for now. Let us know if you need anything else.]The notification showed it had already been read.Eighteen-year-old Bianca stared down at the screen."I never opened that," Connor stammered. His face went completely pale.Bianca handed the phone back to her."He was your choice," she said, her voice eerily calm, "Look at it yourself."Eighteen-year-old Bianca stared at Connor as if seeing a total stranger for the first time in her life."Why?"Tears instantly spilled down Connor's cheeks. "What was I supposed to do? You're already married, and I had nothing. Elliot got the spot as your family's son-in-law, your house, your company, and your mom even gave him the heirloom watch."I waited for you for so many years.
