Chapter 3

Author: TJ
Dominic looked taken aback.

He studied my face, his brow furrowing, as though he expected tears or an accusation to follow.

I had no more explanations to give him.

After a moment, he gave a quiet scoff.

“You’d better mean it.”

He walked past me toward his bedroom.

I waited until his door closed before picking up my phone again.

Of course I meant it.

My flight left in three days.

After that, Dominic would never have to worry about me coming between him and Angela again.

The next morning, there was a woman on the living room sofa.

Angela sat with Dominic’s jacket draped over her shoulders, her face tilted toward him. He stood beside her, listening as she spoke.

There was a faint smile at the corner of his mouth.

Once, I would have spent the rest of the morning wondering when he had last smiled at me like that.

Now I noticed the security guard outside the elevator and the overnight bag beside the sofa.

She was staying.

Dominic straightened when he saw me and stepped in front of Angela, as though she needed protection from me.

“Angela’s had a rough few days. Her doctor wants her resting somewhere she can get proper care. I brought her here for now.”

Behind him, Angela pulled his jacket closer.

“I’m sorry to impose, Emilia. I haven’t been managing very well on my own. Dominic insisted.”

Her skin was pale, her voice soft. A prescription bag sat on the coffee table beside a glass of water.

I nodded.

“Then you should stay and get some rest.”

Dominic frowned, he was confused.

Angela’s eyes filled.

“I understand if you’re still upset with me.”

She lowered her gaze, rubbing a fingertip along the seam of his jacket.

“Is this about the necklace? I should never have told Dominic to give you that blue diamond after I turned it down.”

For a moment, I could only stand there.

That necklace was the only gift Dominic had given me in five years of marriage.

Then she looked up.

“I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. If that’s why you don’t want me here, I’m sorry.”

She started to rise.

Dominic immediately reached for her shoulder.

“Stay seated.”

I looked at him.

The blue diamond necklace.

I remembered the evening he gave it to me.

My birthday.

His mother had insisted on hosting dinner at the Moretti estate. By then, Dominic had already missed two fittings and canceled three dinners with me, but I still dressed for him.

I chose the dark green gown he had once said he liked.

I kept checking the door.

An hour later, Dominic arrived with rain on his coat and an expression that made the conversation at the table falter.

I knew he had been called back from the hospital.

I knew he hadn’t wanted to come.

Still, I went to him.

I took his wet coat and asked a housekeeper for a towel.

“You’re soaked,” I said. “Let me get you something dry.”

He glanced past me at the flowers, the candles, the cake waiting on the sideboard.

Then he looked at my dress.

For a moment, he seemed almost ashamed.

“Your birthday.”

He reached into his coat pocket and took out a jewelry box.

“Happy birthday, Emilia.”

Inside was a blue diamond pendant surrounded by smaller white stones.

I had stared at it for so long that he finally asked whether I liked it.

I told him I loved it.

That night, I asked him to fasten it for me. His fingers brushed the back of my neck, and for the rest of dinner, I could barely stop touching it.

In my last life, I kept it through five years of marriage.

I thought it meant that somewhere beneath his resentment, he still wanted me as his wife.

Now I knew the necklace had never been meant for me. Neither had the happiness I’d imagined it promised.

“Emilia.”

Dominic was watching me.

Something uncertain crossed his face. His hand fell from Angela’s shoulder.

In my last life, hearing that would have left me in tears, asking Dominic why he’d let me treasure something he’d bought for another woman.

And he would have told me I was making too much of it.

But now, seeing a rare flicker of panic in Dominic’s eyes, I simply shook my head.

“If you’d like it back, Angela, it’s upstairs. I can have someone bring it down.”

Her lips parted.

“You don’t have to—”

“It’s fine.”

The necklace. The penthouse. The man standing between us.

I wasn’t going to fight her for any of them.

Dominic stared at me, his jaw tightening.

Angela raised an eyebrow. Clearly, that wasn’t the reaction she’d been hoping for.

“Well, if you’re sure you don’t mind me being here…” She slipped her hand around Dominic’s arm. “Could I borrow your fiancé for a little while? I’d love some fresh air.”

She leaned into Dominic, looking straight at me, openly daring me to object.

I had no reason to.

“Of course.” I said.

Dominic froze. Then his hand closed around my wrist.

“Emilia.”

He searched my face, his grip firm but not painful.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

Behind him, Angela had gone quiet.

I looked down at his hand, then back at him.

“She’s weak, Dominic. She asked you to go with her.”

He didn’t let go.

I kept my voice calm.

“If I said no, wouldn’t you just accuse me of making a scene?”

“Live it, Dominic.”He looked at me as though there had to be more.I adjusted the coat over my arm.“Make your own choices. Find something you want to do. You don’t need me to tell you how.”“And us?”“There is no us anymore.”His eyes filled, but this time, he didn’t argue. My grandfather was waiting by the car.I went to him.In the beginning, Dominic flew to London every week.I found out because I recognized his car across the street from my studio one Friday evening. The following week, it was there again.Sometimes he stood beside it, still wearing the suit he had traveled in. Sometimes I saw only his silhouette behind the window. He never crossed the street. One evening, I stopped before getting into my car.“You can’t keep doing this.”“I’m not asking you for anything.”“I know. But I’m not going to change my mind because you keep showing up.”He looked down at the flowers in his hand. After a moment, he nodded. The next Friday, the space across the street was empty.I noticed

For a moment, I couldn’t move. There was only one way he could know about those five years. But even after everything that had happened to me, I couldn’t make myself believe it.“When it all came back, I thought losing you was the worst part.”Dominic’s eyes stayed on mine.“Then I remembered how many times you tried to tell me you were hurting. How many chances I had to listen.”Snow settled on his shoulders.“And I finally understood why you stopped asking.”My fingers tightened around the edge of the door.“You remember?”“All of it.” His voice caught. “Do you?”“From the moment I woke up.”He closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were wet.“So every time I told you to stop making a scene…”I said nothing. He looked down, pressing his lips together until they lost their color.“I’m sorry, Emilia. For all of it.”I had imagined hearing those words so often that I thought they would hurt more.Instead, I waited.“You never tried to force the wedding. You asked them to give me mor

My grandfather had Dominic escorted out.But when the gates of the Bellini estate closed behind him, he stayed.“Tell him I’m not leaving until he tells me where Emilia is.”That night, it rained.By midnight, water was streaming from his hair and soaking through his suit. His driver pulled up beside him twice.Twice, Dominic sent him away. When the butler reported he was still outside, my grandfather sat silently for a long time. Then he closed the book in his lap.“Leave him.”Dominic had been told I was gone. He had been told the engagement was over.He still wouldn’t listen. At five in the morning, shortly after the rain stopped, his knees buckled. His father’s men took him to the hospital.Dominic ran a fever for three days. And that he kept calling my name.Angela sat beside his bed, holding a damp cloth she no longer bothered pressing to his forehead.“Emilia.”She leaned closer.“Dominic, it’s me.”His fingers moved against the sheets.“Please.”Angela’s hand went still. Then h

Grandfather called just after I landed in London. My driver was taking my luggage toward the waiting car when he said, “Dominic says you’re the only woman he’ll ever marry.”I stopped walking.I hadn’t expected him to say it so easily. Not after everything. In my last life, he had made me a similar promise before Angela returned to New York.We were discussing the wedding when his father called with another list of obligations. Dominic silenced his phone, leaned back beside me, and closed his eyes.“Whatever our families expect from this, Emilia, I want us to be happy.”He looked tired when he turned to me. But sincere.“I’m marrying you because I want to. You know that, right?”I had almost believed that promise could protect us from anything. Then Angela came back. And somehow, the marriage he had wanted became something I had forced on him.“Emilia?”I watched my driver place the last suitcase in the trunk.I didn’t know what Dominic wanted now.I no longer needed to find out.“Coul

While I was leaving New York, Dominic was still waiting for my reply. After my grandfather told him the wedding was canceled, he didn’t believe it.Not when I’d spent so long waiting to marry him.Across the hospital room, Angela adjusted the blanket over her knees.“Is everything okay?”Dominic didn’t answer.Watching him dial my number again, she blinked back tears.“This is my fault. Emilia must be upset that I’ve kept you here with me. I never meant to come between you.” Her voice trembled. “Let me talk to her. I’ll apologize.”Usually, he would have been at her bedside before she finished. This time, he kept staring at his phone, as though he hadn’t heard a word.“Dominic. Outside.”His father’s voice came through the open doorway.Dominic lowered his phone.“If this is about Emilia, I’m handling it.”His father looked at the phone in his hand.“Are you?”Dominic stepped into the hall.
