Chapter 4

Autor: Wolf Cloud
The nurse came over just then.

"Sir, how are you feeling? Any better?"

Suspicion had already crept into Marissa's eyes.

"What happened to my husband?"

"Oh, so you're his wife? He was just—"

I cut in.

"I ran too fast earlier and felt sick. This nurse happened to help me out, that's all."

Marissa still didn't quite believe it.

She pointed at the report in my hand.

"Is that our baby's test?"

I crumpled it into a ball and tossed it into the trash can in the corner.

"No," I said softly. "I found it on the floor. Some people have no manners. They just litter."

"Oh. I see."

Marissa's eyes filled with guilt, and she hugged me tight again.

"I'm sorry, Gideon. I shouldn't have left you, and I definitely shouldn't have sent you out for some stupid coffee."

I tried to wriggle out of her arms.

"I'm fine now. You don't have to worry about me."

But Marissa only held on tighter.

"You're the person I love most. How could I not worry?"

The person she loved most?

I laughed coldly to myself. If she loved me so much, why was she cheating on me?

"Really, I'm fine. People are walking by, and everyone's staring. Let go."

Marissa rested her chin on top of my head and nuzzled it gently.

"Let them stare. Haven't they ever seen a happy couple?"

Not far away, the nurse looked completely lost.

Maybe she couldn't understand why, when my wife so obviously loved me and worried about me, I was cold as ice.

But there was no shortage of stories outside the maternity ward. She'd seen plenty, and she knew when to keep quiet.

I was afraid that if I stayed at the hospital much longer, I'd give myself away sooner or later, so I said I wanted to go home.

Marissa agreed at once.

On the way to the parking lot, her phone lit up.

"Looks like someone's trying to reach you," I said.

Marissa switched off the screen.

"Work stuff. Nothing important. I'm taking you home first."

On the drive, her phone rang.

The caller ID showed only a string of numbers, no name.

Marissa frowned and complained.

"These people are useless. They call me over every little thing."

I smiled.

"What if it's important? Pick up. I'll put it on speaker for you."

Marissa blocked my hand as I reached for her phone.

"No need, Gideon," she said softly. "It's nothing serious. If you're tired, rest. I'll wake you when we get home."

Then she turned her phone off completely.

When we got home, Marissa helped me to the bedroom, laid me down on the bed carefully, and tucked the blanket around me.

She bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead.

"Gideon, get some good sleep. I'm going to swing by the office. I'll be back by the time you wake up, and we'll have dinner together tonight, okay?"

I nodded.

She kissed me again.

"That's my guy."

After she left, I waited a while.

Once I saw her car pull away through the floor-to-ceiling window, I turned on the home computer.

Marissa had never been on guard around me. The home computer didn't even have a password. As soon as it booted up, her messaging app logged in automatically.

A familiar profile picture nearly stabbed me in the eyes.

A Wolverine avatar. Elliot's account.

And the name Marissa had saved him under was "Bad Dog."

[Bad Dog: Master, I'm aching for you...]

A photo came with it.

Elliot had pulled up the hem of his shirt to show off his eight-pack.

He'd even calculatingly worn low-rise pants, and the outline beneath them was impossible to miss.

Two minutes later, a voice message popped up.

I knew Marissa's voice better than anyone's. I recognized it instantly.

[Marissa: Didn't we already do it in the stairwell this afternoon? You want more?]

[Bad Dog: Next week you're going on that cruise with Gideon. That's at least two weeks without you. Master, who's going to take care of me while you're gone...]

[Marissa: Hahaha, fine. I'll come over right now and give you an advance on your compensation, hmm?]

[Bad Dog: Hehe, then you'd better make it two weeks' worth all at once~]

[Marissa, through gritted teeth: Just you wait!]

I exported every one of their chats and saved them to the cloud.

Texts, photos, voice messages. All of it.

When I was done, I made an appointment on my phone to go change my name the next day.

Elliot had gotten one thing right: a scumbag and a slut belonged together.

I had my own self-respect and pride, and I couldn't be bothered to tangle with them. A messy fight would only give gossiping onlookers a juicy, trashy drama to watch. It would do nothing for me.

What I needed to do was cut my losses and move on.

I took out my phone, opened the provincial services app, and booked an appointment for the next morning.

"I don't know you, but I know him. Stay away from him!"After lashing out, Marissa turned to Gideon and started sweet-talking him. But all she got in return was cold distance. He wouldn't even look at her.Margot saw clearly where Gideon stood. She carefully set his easel aside, then shoved Marissa back as she tried to get close to him.The two of them grappled. Margot was strong from years of working out, and she won easily.Marissa's body had long since been hollowed out by the alcohol she'd been drowning herself in. She stumbled and fell to the ground. She couldn't fight back. She didn't even have the strength to get up.Seeing that, Margot didn't bother kicking her while she was down. She simply stood protectively beside the man she loved and warned Marissa from above."His name is Michael Davis. He's my fiancé, and we're getting married soon. If you come after him again, I won't hesitate to call the police. Or to teach you a lesson you won't forget!"She walked away without

So they really had met before, more than once. He just didn't remember.Margot had been a year behind him at university, and she'd had a crush on him even back then. But at the time, he'd been head over heels for Marissa and had eyes for no one else."I thought we just weren't meant to be," she said with a bittersweet smile. "I never imagined I'd run into you on the beach."I'm on vacation, but I've stayed in touch with my friends back home, and they told me some big news. You and Marissa are over. So if that's the case, would you give me a chance to be your girlfriend?"Gideon never imagined that such sincere feelings had been waiting for him in the shadows all these years. It would be a lie to say he wasn't moved. But he'd only just been through something devastating, and jumping straight into a new relationship was asking too much.Fortunately, Margot had never planned to push him. She just asked, as eager as ever, "Could we have dinner together?"Gideon's mind was in turmoil

Seeing Gideon puzzling over the decorations, Margot explained in a soft voice."It's my grandmother's birthday today. We're throwing her a big birthday party, so a lot of family and friends are here."It suddenly made sense to Gideon."So having me paint your grandmother's portrait is your birthday gift for her? That's... actually pretty unique."His earlier doubts vanished.Margot seemed like the type who warmed up to people fast. Even though they'd only just met, she talked to him as if they were old friends."It's part of the gift. I'd like to ask you a favor. Would you come meet my grandmother with me first?"Gideon agreed without a second thought. Naturally, if he was going to paint her portrait, he needed to meet her. But it was obviously not going to be that simple.Instead of taking him to the living room or somewhere like that, Margot led him deeper into the estate. She opened a door to what was clearly a private suite and introduced him with great enthusiasm to her gr

The woman quickly reached out to steady the easel and explained with a smile."Don't worry, I'm not here to accuse you of anything. This is a public place. You're free to draw whatever you like. You just seemed so approachable, so I got curious whether that was me."Up close, Gideon couldn't help noticing her great figure, and his face started to burn. He answered honestly."It is."The woman studied the unfinished drawing carefully for a while, nodded in appreciation, then made a request."Your figure work is really polished. Would you be willing to paint a portrait of my grandmother? I know it's forward to ask when we've only just met, but you can think it over before you decide. Here's my card. I'm Margot Leclair, and I'm staying at a resort estate nearby."Before she'd even finished, she pulled a business card from the pocket of the jacket draped over her shoulders and handed it to him. Besides her name, it listed her title and her company. They were strangers who had only j

The driver ahead, forced to slam on the brakes, rolled down the window and yelled at her furiously."Do you even know how to drive? The light's red! Nice car, but there's nothing upstairs. One of these days your luck's going to run out!"Marissa had never been even-tempered, not since she was a kid. If anyone dared badmouth her behind her back and she found out, they'd regret it. But this time she was clearly in the wrong, and she was so drained she had nothing left. All she could do was sit there in a daze and wait for him to finish. But after a couple more insults, the man suddenly sounded surprised."Hey, aren't you the Langford Group CEO? Marissa Langford?"Marissa was caught off guard. She rarely appeared on business shows and barely had any public profile. How could some random stranger recognize her?"You know who I am?"The man chuckled."Who doesn't know the famous Marissa Langford? Sneaking around with her husband's best friend behind his back, sweet-talking him with

To be fair, Naomi had a lot going for her. If she'd ever been single and dating, she'd have had no shortage of interest. On top of that, she was completely devoted. She'd never gotten too close to any man other than Elliot.Marissa never imagined Elliot had come after her for such a ridiculous reason. She stood frozen in place, struck speechless. So all that irresistible charm she thought she had was fake. The reason he'd chosen her had nothing to do with her. It was all about getting back at Gideon. Now that Gideon had walked away on his own, nothing he'd done meant anything anymore, so naturally he stopped pretending.Elliot unleashed all his spite toward Gideon right in front of her, without a shred of restraint."Every time I thought about how I was stuck living a lonely life while he got to be happily in love, I went crazy with jealousy. So I made up my mind to take the thing he cared about most. And now it looks like I won!"He'd proven to himself that he was more "irresi
