Chapter 3

Autor: Wolf Cloud
Then I smelled cigarette smoke drifting through the air.

Marissa had lit a cigarette. Pregnant or not, she was smoking.

She let out an amused little laugh.

"Your best friend's wife is supposed to be off-limits. Is the guilt what turns you on?"

Elliot's voice was husky.

"Your body's already changing for the baby. I like it."

Marissa laughed low, with a nasty edge.

"Gideon is a true gentleman, and you're the lowest kind of trash. Keeping you around like a pet dog is fun enough. Just one rule: this never reaches Gideon. Understand?"

Elliot scoffed.

"I won't let him find out about us."

Then Marissa sighed softly, and there was something sincere in her voice.

"If it were any other man, I'd know how to deal with him. But you're the friend Gideon cares about most. If I got rid of you, he'd be heartbroken..."

Maybe it was Marissa's so-called heartfelt confession, or maybe the smoke in the stairwell was too thick, but I turned my head and threw up.

For a moment, I honestly couldn't tell whether Marissa loved me or not.

If she didn't love me, why did every word she said protect me?

But if she did, how could she sleep with another man so easily?

And that man was my best friend...

A passing nurse caught me by the arm.

"Sir, are you okay?"

I waved her off.

"I'm fine. Thank you."

"But you look really unwell. Is there anything I can do for you?"

I thought for a moment.

"My wife just had an amniocentesis. Are the results back yet?"

"Not that fast. It'll be about another half hour."

"Could I add one more test?"

The nurse nodded.

"Sure. What would you like to add?"

"I want to know the baby's blood type. Whether it takes after me or my wife."

The nurse nodded again.

"Of course. Give me a moment."

The result came back soon after.

"Sir, the baby is type B."

I froze.

The world had a dark sense of humor.

Marissa was type A, and I was type O. How could we have a type-B baby?

And Elliot—he was type B.

I'd already known the answer in my heart.

But when the naked truth was laid out right in front of me, it still hit me like a bolt of lightning.

...

An hour later, I'd thrown up until there was nothing left but bile, and my mouth was bitter.

When I stepped out of the restroom, someone not far away shouted in relief.

"Mr. Whitaker! It's Mr. Whitaker! We found him! Go tell Ms. Langford!"

Before I could react, a small, warm body wrapped itself around me.

Marissa held me tight, her voice trembling.

"Gideon, where did you go? You scared me to death!"

I looked up and saw that the hospital, which should have been full of nurses and doctors in white, was now full of men in black suits.

They all stood behind Marissa with their heads respectfully bowed.

But when I looked around, Elliot was nowhere to be seen.

"Where is he?"

"Who?"

"Elliot."

Marissa was still frowning, checking me over from head to toe.

Only when she saw I was in one piece did she finally relax.

She let out a heavy breath and pulled me into her arms again.

"I had someone take him home first. What about you? Weren't you just going to buy water? I had people search every convenience store and café nearby, and nobody could find you."

I could still smell faint traces of smoke on her.

"Did you smoke?"

Marissa froze for a second, then denied it.

"Gideon, you know I never smoke."

"You smell like smoke."

"...Maybe I picked it up from someone who was smoking."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Marissa, you're still lying to me.

Suddenly she frowned. Her dry palm had found the cold sweat on my forehead.

The nurse had told me the vomiting was nervous, brought on by extreme emotional stress.

I'd been throwing up in the restroom for over an hour, and my clothes were soaked through with sweat.

I pushed away the small hand wiping my forehead and frowned.

"I'm fine. You like coconut lattes, and there's no coffee shop nearby, so I ran a bit to get you one and worked up a sweat."

Marissa's eyes filled with worry. She pulled the softest part of her shirt's inner lining out and gently dabbed the sweat from my forehead.

"You silly thing. You ran off that far without a word. Do you know how much you scared me?"

One of the men in black chimed in.

"That's right, Mr. Whitaker. Ms. Langford was afraid something had happened to you. She nearly turned the whole hospital upside down."

Another added, "Thank goodness you're okay, Mr. Whitaker. Ms. Langford almost called the police."

Just then, Marissa felt the report I'd been clutching in my hand the whole time.

She pried my fingers open, saw it was a prenatal test report, and instantly went on guard.

"Gideon, did you check the baby's blood type?"

"I don't know you, but I know him. Stay away from him!"After lashing out, Marissa turned to Gideon and started sweet-talking him. But all she got in return was cold distance. He wouldn't even look at her.Margot saw clearly where Gideon stood. She carefully set his easel aside, then shoved Marissa back as she tried to get close to him.The two of them grappled. Margot was strong from years of working out, and she won easily.Marissa's body had long since been hollowed out by the alcohol she'd been drowning herself in. She stumbled and fell to the ground. She couldn't fight back. She didn't even have the strength to get up.Seeing that, Margot didn't bother kicking her while she was down. She simply stood protectively beside the man she loved and warned Marissa from above."His name is Michael Davis. He's my fiancé, and we're getting married soon. If you come after him again, I won't hesitate to call the police. Or to teach you a lesson you won't forget!"She walked away without

So they really had met before, more than once. He just didn't remember.Margot had been a year behind him at university, and she'd had a crush on him even back then. But at the time, he'd been head over heels for Marissa and had eyes for no one else."I thought we just weren't meant to be," she said with a bittersweet smile. "I never imagined I'd run into you on the beach."I'm on vacation, but I've stayed in touch with my friends back home, and they told me some big news. You and Marissa are over. So if that's the case, would you give me a chance to be your girlfriend?"Gideon never imagined that such sincere feelings had been waiting for him in the shadows all these years. It would be a lie to say he wasn't moved. But he'd only just been through something devastating, and jumping straight into a new relationship was asking too much.Fortunately, Margot had never planned to push him. She just asked, as eager as ever, "Could we have dinner together?"Gideon's mind was in turmoil

Seeing Gideon puzzling over the decorations, Margot explained in a soft voice."It's my grandmother's birthday today. We're throwing her a big birthday party, so a lot of family and friends are here."It suddenly made sense to Gideon."So having me paint your grandmother's portrait is your birthday gift for her? That's... actually pretty unique."His earlier doubts vanished.Margot seemed like the type who warmed up to people fast. Even though they'd only just met, she talked to him as if they were old friends."It's part of the gift. I'd like to ask you a favor. Would you come meet my grandmother with me first?"Gideon agreed without a second thought. Naturally, if he was going to paint her portrait, he needed to meet her. But it was obviously not going to be that simple.Instead of taking him to the living room or somewhere like that, Margot led him deeper into the estate. She opened a door to what was clearly a private suite and introduced him with great enthusiasm to her gr

The woman quickly reached out to steady the easel and explained with a smile."Don't worry, I'm not here to accuse you of anything. This is a public place. You're free to draw whatever you like. You just seemed so approachable, so I got curious whether that was me."Up close, Gideon couldn't help noticing her great figure, and his face started to burn. He answered honestly."It is."The woman studied the unfinished drawing carefully for a while, nodded in appreciation, then made a request."Your figure work is really polished. Would you be willing to paint a portrait of my grandmother? I know it's forward to ask when we've only just met, but you can think it over before you decide. Here's my card. I'm Margot Leclair, and I'm staying at a resort estate nearby."Before she'd even finished, she pulled a business card from the pocket of the jacket draped over her shoulders and handed it to him. Besides her name, it listed her title and her company. They were strangers who had only j

The driver ahead, forced to slam on the brakes, rolled down the window and yelled at her furiously."Do you even know how to drive? The light's red! Nice car, but there's nothing upstairs. One of these days your luck's going to run out!"Marissa had never been even-tempered, not since she was a kid. If anyone dared badmouth her behind her back and she found out, they'd regret it. But this time she was clearly in the wrong, and she was so drained she had nothing left. All she could do was sit there in a daze and wait for him to finish. But after a couple more insults, the man suddenly sounded surprised."Hey, aren't you the Langford Group CEO? Marissa Langford?"Marissa was caught off guard. She rarely appeared on business shows and barely had any public profile. How could some random stranger recognize her?"You know who I am?"The man chuckled."Who doesn't know the famous Marissa Langford? Sneaking around with her husband's best friend behind his back, sweet-talking him with

To be fair, Naomi had a lot going for her. If she'd ever been single and dating, she'd have had no shortage of interest. On top of that, she was completely devoted. She'd never gotten too close to any man other than Elliot.Marissa never imagined Elliot had come after her for such a ridiculous reason. She stood frozen in place, struck speechless. So all that irresistible charm she thought she had was fake. The reason he'd chosen her had nothing to do with her. It was all about getting back at Gideon. Now that Gideon had walked away on his own, nothing he'd done meant anything anymore, so naturally he stopped pretending.Elliot unleashed all his spite toward Gideon right in front of her, without a shred of restraint."Every time I thought about how I was stuck living a lonely life while he got to be happily in love, I went crazy with jealousy. So I made up my mind to take the thing he cared about most. And now it looks like I won!"He'd proven to himself that he was more "irresi
