Chapter 3

Author: Petey Parkin
"Don't take Carson's behavior to heart," Rebecca said.

She poured a glass of warm water, pulled a box of painkillers from the first-aid kit, and handed them to me.

I accepted them and swallowed two pills. "Thank you."

She studied my pale face. "When I was sick, I used to lie awake all night too. Back then, the doctors told me I wouldn't last six months. Every night, it hurt so much I wanted to slam my head against the wall. Even breathing felt like torture.

"Everyone around me was just waiting for me to die, already planning how to divide my assets. They all thought I'd never pull through. But I refused to give up. I gritted my teeth and made it through chemo, then surgery. And look at me now—alive and well."

She turned away, looking out at the night sky. "Felix, no matter how other people treat you, your life belongs to you. Don't give up on it so easily."

For the first time since my rebirth, I felt genuine warmth from another human being.

I cupped the warm glass in my hands. "I understand."

The next few days passed in relative peace.

After Rebecca's warning, Carson stopped picking on me openly, though he still couldn't stand the sight of me.

Whenever we passed each other, he made a point of bumping his shoulder into mine, and at meals, he'd deliberately move the dishes I disliked in front of me.

Natalie watched it all coldly from the sidelines, neither joining in nor stopping him.

None of it bothered me.

…

One afternoon, I returned home from a follow-up appointment at the hospital. The doctor had told me the tumor was spreading faster than expected. I had two months left at most.

When I reached my room, I found Carson rummaging through my backpack.

Natalie leaned against the doorframe, watching him with a deep frown. "What are you even looking for? Hurry up and get out of there. You'll get chewed out again if Mom catches you."

Carson refused to back off. "Stay out of it. I just want to see what dirty secrets he's hiding in here."

He forcefully dumped out the contents of the bag. Out tumbled several empty bottles of strong painkillers, along with a photo of my late grandfather, worn at the edges.

When Carson looked up and saw me walking in, he seemed a little flustered, a bottle still clutched in his hand.

Whatever taunt he'd prepared died in his throat.

"Why… Why are you taking so many of these?" he stammered.

I walked over, calmly took Grandpa's photo from his hand, and carefully wiped away the fingerprints with my sleeve. Then, I swept the empty bottles into a drawer.

"Are you done looking?" My voice was as soft as a breeze. "If you are, please zip my bag back up."

Natalie stared at the painkiller bottles and the photo of my late grandpa, her expression conflicted.

She straightened up and tugged on Carson's arm, her tone stiff but sincere. "I'm sorry. Carson shouldn't have gone through your things."

I looked down at Grandpa's blurry face in the picture. "You don't need to apologize. Nothing lasts anyway."

My words made Natalie's heart clench. She stared into my lifeless eyes, then dragged Carson out of the room, her face tight with mixed emotions.

The room fell quiet again.

Before long, my phone began vibrating incessantly. Mom had sent over a dozen texts.

"That worthless bastard ran the lottery ticket through the wash and shredded it!"

"It's ruined! Everything's gone!"

"You knew all along, didn't you? Why didn't you warn me before you left?"

"We're fighting so bad now we're about to get a divorce!"

"Get out here right now!"

As the messages kept popping up on the screen, I could practically see her furious face.

In my past life, I'd fought desperately to rescue that winning lottery ticket from the washing machine. And what had I gotten in return? She'd abandoned me after she struck it rich.

I typed back three cold words, "I didn't know."

Then, I blocked her number, muted my phone, and tossed it onto the bed.

My head throbbed with another sharp wave of pain, so I pulled out the fresh bottle of painkillers I'd just bought and swallowed a few.

…

That evening, I went for a walk along the tree-lined road outside the gated community. The cool, fresh air helped ease my headache a little.

I'd just reached the corner when Mom stepped out and blocked my path.

When I woke up again, the room was full of doctors.Rebecca listened to their report with a grave expression, her brows deeply furrowed. The doctors shook their heads, packed up their things, and left.Dad sat beside my bed, holding my hand tightly, silent tears streaming down his face.I stared up at the ceiling. My body felt weightless, as if it didn't belong to me. "How long was I asleep?"Natalie stepped forward, her voice slightly hoarse. "Two days."I tried to sit up, but I had no strength in my body at all.Carson quickly pressed my shoulders back down. "Don't move. Just lie still."I looked at the worry in their eyes and felt very calm inside. "Let's go back."…After we returned to the Sutton residence, I spent most of my time asleep. Whenever I was awake, I watched the leaves outside the window slowly turn yellow and drift to the ground.Rebecca sat beside my bed, peeling an apple with a paring knife. "Is there anything else you want to do?"I looked at her, my tho

As my headache flared up, I bit down on the corner of the blanket, trying hard not to make a sound. My forehead was covered in cold sweat.Dad gently pushed the door open and walked in with a warm towel. He sat on the edge of the bed and laid the towel across my forehead. "Does it hurt that bad?"I kept my eyes closed, not wanting him to see how weak I was. "It's not too bad."Dad's hands trembled slightly as he clumsily rubbed my temples. "I've never really taken care of you before, so I might not be very good at this. Bear with me."The warmth on my forehead helped ease my tense nerves. "You don't have to take care of me. Go back to sleep."Dad didn't stop, and his voice was choked with emotion. "I can't sleep. Just let me stay with you for a little while."I didn't refuse again. As he gently rubbed my temples, I slowly drifted off to sleep.…A few days later, we arrived at the southern coast. A damp, salty night breeze drifted off the sea, sweeping away the muggy heat of th

"I'd always lived with Grandpa before," I went on. "And when I lived with Mom in my past life, I never even left the state."Rebecca nodded and pulled out her phone to look up travel options. "Alright. Where do you want to go?"I thought for a moment and replied, "Snowy mountains, the coast, and a lively festival."…The next day, the mansion was bustling. Dad was in my room with several large suitcases, packing my clothes. He folded a heavy down jacket and tucked it into the corner of one suitcase. "It's cold up in the snowy mountains. This one's windproof, so you're bringing it."I sat on the edge of the bed, watching his back as he busied himself. "You don't need to pack so much. Just a couple of changes of clothes will do."Dad paused with his back to me. "No. If you catch a cold, your headaches will get worse."He turned around and slipped a box of pre-sorted pills into my carry-on bag. "I've divided your pills up by dose. I'll remind you when it's time to take them."I l

Rebecca's eyes were cold, without the slightest flicker of emotion. "I don't care what memories you have. I still haven't settled the score with you for harassing Felix outside last time."Mom swallowed and forced herself to look calm. "He's my son. I have every right to come looking for him. I heard he's so sick he's about to die. Keeping him around will only be a burden to you. Why not give me some money, and I'll take him away?"Rebecca stood up and looked down at her. "I warned you before that if you ever showed your face here again, I'd make sure you spent the rest of your life unable to even afford food."She turned to the security guards standing off to the side. "Break one of her legs and throw her out of the city. Don't let her set foot here again."The guards stepped forward and grabbed Mom by the arms, one on each side, hoisting her up."Ms. Sutton! Ms. Sutton, you can't do this! I was wrong! I don't want the money anymore!"Mom's pleas for mercy gradually faded outsid

Carson walked over, grabbed a dish towel from the counter, and wrapped it around both sides of the pot. "Don't you know you're supposed to wear oven mitts?"Dad froze, rooted to the spot, unsure of what to do. "I… I was in a hurry and forgot."Carson picked up the pot and headed toward the dining room. "Go grab a bowl. Felix is probably hungry by now."Dad's eyes stung with tears, and he quickly turned to get a bowl from the cabinet. They walked into my room one after the other. Carson set the pot on the small tray table. "Have it while it's hot. He simmered it all afternoon, and it's cooked just right."Dad handed me a bowl of broth, avoiding my eyes. "Careful. It's hot."I took the bowl and felt the warmth seep through the porcelain. "Thank you."Carson pulled up a chair and sat down. "From now on, don't carry anything this hot yourself," he told Dad. "It's not like we don't have maids."Dad wiped his hands awkwardly. "I just felt better making it myself."Carson didn't say

When I opened my eyes again, all I could see was a glaring, cold white.Rebecca sat on the couch beside my hospital bed, a stack of test results in her hands, her brows slightly furrowed as she read through them. When the door opened and the attending physician walked in, Rebecca closed the reports and handed them to the assistant behind her."From now on, I want the best pain management you have," she told the doctor. "Spare no expense."The doctor nodded. "Don't worry, Ms. Sutton. We'll do everything we can to ease his pain."Rebecca turned and met my gaze. "You're awake. Have some water."She picked up the thermos on the table, poured a cup of warm water, slipped a straw into it, and held it to my lips.I took a small sip through the straw, feeling the moisture ease my parched throat. "Thank you, Ms. Sutton."Rebecca set the cup back on the table, pulled out a tissue, and handed it to me. "The doctor said you need plenty of rest, so I arranged a leave of absence from school
