Chapter 2

مؤلف: Peachy
Killian didn't come home that night.

Next morning. I was drinking coffee. The front door opened.

Same suit as yesterday. But something was different. A strange vanilla lotion smell on him.

Not my brand. We never had vanilla in this house. I'm allergic to those oils. Killian knew that better than anyone.

He walked over. Leaned in to kiss my forehead like always. He stopped when he saw my cold eyes. Panic flashed in his face. Guilt too. Then he rested his chin on my shoulder. His breath smelled sweet and sickening.

"Busy at the docks. Too late to come home." He sounded casual. "Don't work too hard. You look pale."

I just hummed. I didn't say a word.

"I need a shower." He stood up. Hiding his eyes. "I smell like work. Don't want to get it on you."

I took a napkin. Wiped the sick smell off my shoulder.

My phone buzzed. Red alert on the family channel. Underground clinic. VIP room. Emergency.

I grabbed my med kit and ran.

The clinic door was wide open. Sharp chemical smell hit me.

Marcus. A Rossi Capo. Dead on the floor. Purple face. Deep blue lips.

Brielle sat in the corner. Hugging her knees. Shaking. Crying like a wilted flower.

I crouched to check his pupils. Fast footsteps behind me.

"Brielle!"

Killian. Sounding so panicked. I never heard him like that.

He rushed in. Stepped right over the dead body. Pulled Brielle into his arms.

"It's okay. I'm here. Don't be scared." He stroked her hair. So gentle. Like she was glass.

Brielle's brother died for Killian last month. Took a dozen bullets. Turned to meat. Killian was chained by that debt. Protecting Brielle was his duty now. But the tender look in his eyes? It still cut me deep.

A guard noticed me. "Boss. Dr. Pierce is here too..."

Killian's arms loosened just a bit. He snapped his head toward me. Hidden panic.

But Brielle wailed louder. He held her tight again. He looked away, forcing his eyes to go cold.

I put my gloves on. Kept checking. My voice was flat. "Pinned pupils. Blue lips. Mixed drug overdose causing respiratory failure. Dead for under forty minutes."

"Change it to cardiac arrest. Nothing to do with drugs." Killian cut me off. An absolute order.

I looked up. "The Family cleaner handles the body. We don't just fake medical logs."

"Valerie." He growled. A naked warning.

I ignored him. Packed my kit and left.

Six hours later. The tox screen was on my desk. Succinylcholine and fentanyl mixed injection. Perfectly calculated dose. Lethal in forty minutes. No obvious track marks.

Administered by: Brielle Hayes.

I just stepped into our apartment. A hand slammed me against the wall.

"What are you trying to do?" Killian's face was inches from mine. Eyes bloodshot.

"Doing my job."

"She's a pro. Three years on the job. Zero mistakes!" He gritted his teeth. "Are you jealous of her? Did you fake the report to frame her?"

I stared right back. Word by word. "A perfect medic? Making a rookie mistake an intern wouldn't make? Think about it, Killian. Does that make sense?"

His pupils shrank. "What are you hinting at?"

"I'm not hinting. I'm stating medical facts."

"Shut up!" he roared. Agony and conflict in his eyes. He didn't want to doubt Brielle. He didn't want to believe I framed her either. He let go. Turned to his guards. Voice hoarse. "Take her to the clinic break room! Let her cool off! No one lets her out without my word!"

My heart dropped.

Two guards dragged me away. Down to the clinic. But we didn't stop at the break room. We stopped at the sterilization chamber.

Behind the glass, white gas started pouring in.

"Killian said the break room!" I banged on the door. "This concentration will kill me!"

The lead guard sneered. "Miss Hayes said the Boss wants you in here. To really 'cool off'."

They locked the door. Walked away.

The gas got thicker. My throat burned. Seconds later, my airway spasmed. I opened my mouth to scream. No sound came out.

I slid to the floor. Back against the cold glass. My vision blurred.

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

I couldn't tell. Was it the chemicals? Or was it just my breaking heart?

Valerie's POVNo smell of gunpowder in the wind. No armored cars locking down three blocks. No suffocating mafia rules. The wind from the Alps carried the scent of grass and sweet wine over my bare back.I stood in front of the mirror. I let the dress designer tweak the neckline.I picked this dress myself. Simple cut. A large, delicate lace cutout on the back."Dr. Pierce, are you sure about this style?" The designer looked hesitantly at the scars on my back in the mirror. "We could add a lining to cover...""No need." I cut her off. Soft but firm. "Leave it."Three years ago, those scars were a secret I was terrified to show. The bumpy burns, the crisscrossing whip marks. They were the badge of shame the Rossi family carved into my flesh.Three years later, under Arthur's care, they had faded into uneven light lines. Like overlapping butterfly wings stretching across my shoulder blades.I didn't need to hide them anymore. They weren't shame. They were proof that I survived.A simple

Killian's POVThe wheelchair got caught on the rug. I yanked it hard and almost hit the floor."Boss, let me." Marco rushed over."Get lost!" I slapped his hand away. My voice echoed in the empty study.New York's winter was long and bitter. It had been over half a year since that night in Geneva. My spinal nerves were completely dead. The doctors said I'd spend the rest of my life wasting away in this chair. Surviving on the morphine in my pump. The study lights were off. I liked the dark. In the dark, nobody could see my useless body. The silver ring the old Don left was on the desk. I reached for it. Cold as ice."Boss," Marco spoke again, his tone careful and hesitant. "Something arrived for you. No sender."He placed a white envelope on my lap. Like setting down a bomb about to go off.I stared at the envelope for a long time."Get out," I said.Marco bowed his head and backed out fast. He closed the door softly.I used my good left hand to open it.No invitation. No letter.Just

Valerie's POV"Apply pressure to the wound!"The moment my voice burst out, my body moved ahead of my mind. Medics rushed out of the hotel lobby. The stretcher wheels rolled over the bloody pavement.Killian's eyelids were growing heavy. His lips faded to ash gray by the second."BP seventy-four, pulse weak!" A medic yelled over the ambulance sirens.I stood there. I watched him get loaded onto the stretcher. His blood-soaked suit clung to his skin. Four bullet holes like four silent mouths.Arthur's hand squeezed my shoulder. "Are you okay?"I couldn't speak. The Geneva General Hospital ER was lit up bright. The Director himself came out and recognized me immediately."Dr. Pierce! Our head of trauma surgery is abroad for a conference. You're the only one here qualified to operate on a penetrating trauma of this level!" He spoke incredibly fast, practically begging. "Please, the patient is critical!"I stood in the hallway outside the OR. The red light wasn't on yet. What flashed throu

Killian's POVI knelt there. I watched the door shut behind them. The lake wind hit my bare chest. Cold as a knife.I should get up. I should turn around and go back to my own darkness. Rot until I die, just like the old Don said. But my legs wouldn't listen.I followed them. Thirty meters behind. Like a stray dog.Outside the hotel's revolving doors was the empty driveway.Valerie held Arthur's arm. They walked to a car parked by the curb. Quick steps. No intention of stopping for me ever again.I stood in the shadows. My eyes scanned the area out of habit.Five years of tasting blood made my instincts sharper than any bodyguard.A black van at the corner. The window was cracked open just a sliver. In that sliver, a tiny red dot flashed by.A sniper's infrared laser. My blood froze. That wasn't a normal robber. That was a trained killer. The gun was aimed right at the center of the driveway. Right at Valerie.I recognized the van's plate prefix. Marcus's rats. The last squad hiding in

Valerie's POVThe night breeze blew the lake's chill over the terrace.I looked at Killian kneeling on the floor. My heart felt absolutely nothing. Those ripped-open wounds three years ago. Those fifteen suffocating hours. Now they felt like an old movie I watched a long time ago. I remembered the plot, but I couldn't feel the emotions anymore."Valerie, you're just mad at me." He suddenly looked up. His eyes were bloodshot. His voice carried desperate madness. "Mad that I whipped you. Mad that I burned you. Right?"He didn't wait for my answer. His hand moved to his belt. The metal buckle clicked open.He shoved the belt into my hand. He squeezed my fingers so hard they almost broke. "Pour that medicine on me. Whip me. Whatever makes you feel better."He ripped open his shirt. He showed the heartbeat line tattoo on his chest. He looked at me with red eyes, waiting for a late judgment.I looked down at the warm belt in my hand.Three years ago, this thing landed on my back fifty-seven

Killian's POVThe ballroom chandeliers were blinding. The light turned every gown into a museum piece. The world's top medical minds were all here. The clinking of champagne glasses set my teeth on edge.I stood on the edge of the crowd in a black bespoke suit. Blending in with these chatting elites like a stain on white canvas.Security didn't bat an eye at my face. They were looking for terrorists, not a mafia boss. I used a fake name and got in within ten minutes.I searched for her face for a whole hour.Until I saw her walk out the side door to the terrace. Alone.I followed her almost purely on instinct. The night wind blew through the hall. It washed away the smell of champagne and perfume. She was alone on the terrace. Leaning on the railing, looking at the lights on Lake Geneva.Three years hadn't aged her a day.She wore a dark green evening gown. Her profile was softer than I remembered. But also further away."Valerie."My voice shook pathetically. She turned around.I thou
