Chapter 2

Author: Bright Lights
I had almost forgotten that Quentin had gone abroad for some once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity when he and Teresa were at the height of their relationship.

Teresa, crushed by heartbreak and desperate for comfort, accepted my confession only because of that.

Quentin, her darling first love, had returned, yet I was still foolish enough to think I had a place in her heart.

I felt a bitter ache in my chest as I asked her, "Does this count as one of the requests I'm fulfilling for you, Teresa?"

Teresa furrowed her brow, clearly not understanding the question. She originally intended to ask what I was talking about, but seeing how pale Quentin looked, she could only brush off her confusion and answer hastily, "Yes."

I nodded with a wry smile. "I'll do it, then."

I thought my life was ruined back when I was kicked out of my house without a single cent to my name.

That was until I met Teresa, who acted like my guardian angel. She helped me get in touch with a company and arranged for me to join their best team. That gave me the chance to make a name for myself and have my talent recognized.

I finally worked up the courage to propose to her on the day of the award ceremony.

Teresa remained silent, her gaze lingering on my face for a long while.

I sensed the profound gloom in her eyes and asked, "What will it take for you to marry me, Teresa?"

Teresa sighed. She then avoided my gaze and continued offhandedly, "Why don't we make a deal? Fulfill 99 requests for me unconditionally, with each one counting as a step toward me. We'll hopefully have a happily ever after once you've fulfilled all 99 requests."

It turned out Teresa had forgotten our deal.

But it didn't really matter. I would be able to leave without any regrets once I completed this 97th request, along with the two that remained after it.

Just as I had completed the design drafts, a torrential downpour hit, and my car tires got stuck in the mud, spinning helplessly. I ran as hard as I could, but when I stepped into the hospital ward, all I saw was the malicious grin on Quentin's face.

I was still trying to figure out what was happening when I suddenly lost my footing. I pitched forward and knocked over the bucket of dirty water the cleaning lady had been using. The design drafts were soaked through, and my elbow slammed hard against the floor, sending a wave of intense pain through my arm.

The cleaning lady let out a gasp of surprise.

Quentin, still in his hospital bed, rubbed his temple and said in an aggrieved tone, "You could've just said so if you didn't want to help me with the design drafts. You didn't have to trip and ruin them deliberately, Mr. Lister."

Teresa had intended to help me up when I slipped, but after hearing what Quentin said, she shot me a cold look. "You should just head home. Your clothes are all wet."

Quentin held onto her hand and said, "It's alright. I'm not in a hurry with those design drafts anyway. You shouldn't let this ruin your mood, Teresa."

Teresa was about to speak, but seeing that I had already stood up, she stopped herself.

I picked up the design drafts and walked unsteadily toward the exit.

Teresa noticed how stiff my arm was, a flicker of worry in her eyes. "What's wrong with your arm, Aaron?"

Quentin's mocking voice rang out behind me. "Is this your way of imitating me? I mean, my hand is injured, and now yours is too, Mr. Lister.

"Oh, I know what you're doing! Now that your hand's hurt, you don't have to finish the design drafts, and you even get Teresa's sympathy on top of it, Mr. Lister!"

Teresa's eyes widened in disbelief. She wanted to yell at me, but after glancing at the other patients in the hospital ward, she lowered her voice and snapped, "You could've just said so if you didn't want to help out! You don't need to play these petty games! I honestly don't even know who you are anymore, Aaron!"

I smiled wryly, knowing that nobody would care about what a failure had to say—not that I'd ever bragged about my success, even when I was at the top. Quentin had the upper hand now, especially with Teresa's blatant favoritism.

I knew that nothing I said would matter, as she was never going to believe me over him.

Aaron's and Quentin's voices rang out from the voice recorder. "What do you mean by that?""You're the one who broke your promise first, so today I'm going to teach you a lesson, Aaron.""Teresa won't let you off the hook for this!""Do you actually think she'll believe you?"Teresa remembered this was recorded the day Aaron got hurt. Why would Quentin say something like that? Had she misheard? She couldn't help but widen her eyes in surprise as she continued listening. She could never mistake this voice—it was definitely Quentin."Where should I begin? How about this hand of yours—the one you use to draw your designs?""How long do you think you can keep your scheme under wraps? You won't get off the hook so easily if anything happens to me, Quentin!""No one's ever going to find out. Who gives a damn about a mere plagiarist anyway? Teresa won't even give you the time of day once you're crippled, Aaron!"Hold him down and keep hitting him—don't stop!"Hadn't Quentin sai

On several occasions, Aaron had looked at Teresa with intense longing and expectation. She, however, had never paid it any attention. These gifts were all the things she had left of him at this moment. She noticed a line of small, delicate handwriting on the bottom of the ring box Aaron had left her. She soon realized that every gift box had the same wish written on the bottom.Teresa looked at the same wish repeated on every gift, feeling a pang in her chest. Aaron had given her so many gifts and asked for nothing but the chance to stay with her forever. On the other hand, she had hurt him repeatedly for Quentin's sake. She had gone back on their promise to travel to Jarevon together, taken his design drafts, and forced him to ghostwrite for Quentin. She felt an agonizing pain in her chest whenever she remembered Aaron covered in blood and lying in the dirt, waiting for her for who knows how long. She never realized just how much her coldness had hurt him. She was consumed by

Teresa had brushed it off as a joke back then and even teased Aaron with a smile, "You're being so secretive, huh? You've got me really curious now! I really want to know what you prepared for me now, Aaron!"Yet in that moment, everything had become a thing of the past, with only the weighty sketchbook left behind. Teresa finally understood how she really felt, but it was already too late. Aaron had already vanished from her life before he could ever reveal his secret. She still had no idea what the numbers meant, though. She stood by the desk and pondered for a long time until the cleaner's voice suddenly came from the doorway. "I can't get one of the cabinets to open, Ms. Gardner."It was a cabinet located in the storage room, a place packed with clutter year-round that nobody usually went into.Teresa got up to take a look and found a new lock on the cabinet, which was impossible to open without the passcode. She called the best locksmith, but cracking it would still take t

The HR manager replied, "He was here just five minutes ago. He was wearing a black coat and a black hat when he came by to handle Aaron's resignation."Teresa ran out without another word, ignoring the HR manager's surprised look. She had just stepped out of the company when she spotted a young man in black, wearing a black hat and covering himself completely. She chased him down three blocks before finally stopping him at the entrance to an alley. "Where exactly is Aaron? You'd better not make me ask you a second time."Harrison finally turned around and revealed himself. Teresa's attitude clearly angered him as he snapped, "Aaron has already let go of you! You'll never be able to find him again, Teresa!"With that, he angrily shook off her hand and strode away.Teresa didn't chase after him this time. She recalled what Aaron had said to her that day. "Teresa, this is the last time. I think it's time for me to let go."She had assumed he was just speaking out of anger, never

Though the handwriting was crooked and uneven, the words were clearly legible.Teresa could hardly believe what she read. She stared at that line repeatedly before realizing it was Aaron's farewell note to her. She instantly panicked and dialed the number that had sent her the message. "Where is he now? What's going on here? Tell me!"Harrison brushed off her anxiety with a sneer. "Does the truth even matter to you? Where were you when Aaron was injured? You're actually acting concerned now, huh? You'd better not forget that you chose Quentin over Aaron and left him behind."He ended the call after saying that, leaving only the busy tone.Teresa stood rooted to the spot, unable to come back to her senses. That day, Quentin had been badly injured and had begged her to stay with him.She stayed with him until he was taken care of, then returned to find the place completely empty. She had assumed he had received proper medical treatment and would be all right. If she had known he

Having said that, Quentin spat out a mouthful of blood.Terese panicked. She abandoned me without a second thought after being faced with a choice between us. "Your injuries need attention right away! I'll take you to the hospital first. Aaron is tough, so nothing will happen to him, Quentin."She turned to look at me before leaving, saying, "I'm sorry, but Quentin means too much to me. I'll come back for you in a bit, Aaron."There were times when no amount of explaining mattered as much as one word from the person you loved.I didn't care to find out whether Teresa truly believed Quentin's lies, nor did I want to defend myself anymore. "Teresa, this is the last time. I think it's time for me to let go."Teresa looked at my pale lips, feeling a sudden emptiness in her heart as an inexplicable sorrow washed over her. She wanted to say something more, but Quentin's sharp coughing broke the silence. She brushed aside those strange feelings, supported Quentin, and walked away.T
