The call cut off, and the hospital hallway fell deathly silent.No one knew how much time had passed before the morgue doors swung open.Adam walked out unsteadily, holding a small black ceramic urn. His eyes were red, and his voice was thick with emotion."Esther, Hugo's really gone. Depression tormented him for so many years. He chose to leave while we weren't home. I think he was trying to let us be together."He stepped closer and rested a hand on Esther's shoulder."He knew we'd been torturing each other for three years, so he chose this way to bow out. Esther practically stumbled into the hospital.Her eyes were bloodshot. Grabbing a police officer in the corridor, she demanded in a hoarse voice, "I'm Hugo Abernathy's family. I need to see him. Take me to him!"The officer sighed, a complicated look crossing his face."Ms. Mabry, I'm afraid you can't see him. Mr. Abernathy left a will stating that once his body was found, no family or friends were to be notified. He requested immediate cremation by the funeral home. The cremation was completed 30 minutes ago.
