Chapter 2

Author: Penguin Heat
Peter avoided my gaze. "Louise, if you don't sign the settlement agreement, I'll freeze all your bank cards. You won't have a single cent to spend."

My heart broke in two. Driven by despair, I struck my head against them repeatedly. When I couldn't reach, I kicked them fiercely in frustration.

"I, Louise Joplin, swear I'll uncover the truth for my daughter!"

I spent three grueling days visiting law firms all over Ardenfield. But each time, I was turned away.

Will did exactly as he said he would. His warning was enough to scare off anyone who might take my case.

Even beyond Ardenfield, not a single lawyer would agree to represent me.

Peter was equally ruthless, cutting off all my sources of income without a second thought. Left with no other choice, I began selling my jewelry and handbags just to scrape together enough for legal fees.

But to my dismay, no one dared to buy them.

As soon as they found out that I was the seller, they walked away. No discount could change their minds.

Crushed and disheartened, I went to apply for a loan, only to be turned away once again.

I used to have everything I ever wanted within my grasp. But now, I was nothing more than a desperate woman begging at the bank.

As the security guards led me outside, I spotted Will's car parked just beyond the door.

Soon, the window rolled down. With a smug gleam in her eyes, Violet looked over at me from the passenger seat.

Will threw the settlement agreement my way, treating me like a beggar.

"Louise, I'm sure it's clear to you now. Without us, you can't do a thing. I'm giving you one last chance. Sign the agreement, and I'll take you home."

I looked at Will as though he were a stranger.

No one but me ever sat in that passenger seat, and he never spoke to me so coldly before.

My glare cut straight into Violet.

A few years ago, Peter, Will, and Jeremy went hiking when a sudden storm trapped them high in the mountains.

When the rescue team found them the next day, they also discovered Violet's husband, Xavier Brookshire. Unfortunately, his body was already cold and lifeless.

Will said they slipped down a slope during their descent and lost consciousness. He was certain that Xavier saved their lives; without him, they would have perished.

Out of gratitude, I sent Violet two million dollars in cash and a banner honoring Xavier's heroic act. But to my surprise, she asked for one more favor.

She demanded that I remove every report related to Xavier as well as the storm incident.

Xavier saved my loved ones, and for that, I owed Violet my thanks. Still, I never thought their son would be the one to shove my daughter into the water years down the line.

Perhaps Violet was the one who pushed him to do it.

My face went pale at the thought.

I would never let Mia's death go unanswered—not even for the man who once saved Will's life.

Without another glance back at Will, I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Violet's sugary-sweet voice drifted over. "Will, don't hold me back. I want to apologize to Ms. Joplin. If I don't give up, she'll forgive me sooner or later."

Will spoke sharply, his voice trembling with fury. "We've spoiled Louise far too much! The only thing she's mastered is throwing tantrums. You don't owe her an apology. I'd honestly like to see how she manages to continue living her carefree life without us."

The wind swept past, stinging my eyes.

They once told me they hoped I would always remain this naive. But now, I understood just how oblivious I was all along. I thought I was the luckiest woman on earth, blindly holding onto my illusions about them.

From here on out, I was determined to seek justice for Mia on my own.

As I struggled to gather funds for a lawyer, Violet went live online.

She displayed the banner I once gave her.

The bodyguards moved in, showing no emotion. As soon as they grabbed Violet, she began trembling uncontrollably."I was wrong! I'll talk. I'll tell you everything!" she cried out."Xavier only followed the three of you because he thought you were wealthy. He planned to rob you and get some money for himself."When you all lost consciousness, he wanted to grab whatever valuables he could and make a quick escape. But unexpectedly, he was bitten by a snake."After he died, it was just Finn and me. We could barely hang on. I wanted more money, so I fabricated the story about Xavier coming to your rescue."As for Ms. Hilliker, I drove her to her death. I arranged for her to see the news that day and paid the nursing home's director to keep it hidden from you."Also, that so-called psychic was actually a hired actor. I was behind everything. I'll turn myself in and go to prison. Please, spare my life!"Violet confessed everything at once. Will, Jeremy, and Peter stood frozen, stunned

"So it's you, bitch! Louise, why do you always ruin everything for me? How dare you hire someone to hit me?"Did you really think sending a few men to kidnap me would scare me? Let's see how fast Will, Peter, and Jeremy turn against you. They definitely won't let this go unpunished."Without saying a word, I slapped Violet hard. Her face twisted with fury as she glared at me. "Keep dreaming! You couldn't beat me in a million years. Listen carefully, Louise. Will and the others will always be on my side!" she snapped.Talking felt pointless. Every time Violet opened her mouth, I slapped her again."When they eventually come to rescue me, I'll make sure you pay back tenfold for every humiliation I've endured today!" she exclaimed.Just as I raised my hand to strike again, the door swung open abruptly. Will, Jeremy, and Peter stood there, their breaths coming in heavy gasps.Violet broke down, her tears streaming uncontrollably. "Will! Jeremy! Peter! Help me!" she called out.Jere

Will instinctively withdrew his hand from Violet's."Violet, I'm already married. Please be respectful. I don't appreciate you being so forward. Besides, Xavier's grave has been moved. Of the three promises we made to you, only one remains. What's the last one?"Violet's smile wavered."Ms. McGrath, only the final task is left," Peter pressed. "Please tell us what you want. Once it's done, we'll need to return and talk to Louise. After that, we expect you to stay away from her."A flash of irritation crossed Violet's face, but she quickly masked it with a tearful look."I know I've been a burden to all of you lately. To be honest, I can't help but envy Ms. Joplin for having three men who dote on her so much."This brings me to my third wish. For one month, I want you to shower me with the same attention you give Ms. Joplin. After that, I will leave on my own and never trouble you again."Seeing the three men hesitate, Violet's voice grew bitter."Am I asking too much? If that's

Peter's face darkened. Without a word, he strode up to me and slapped me across the face."Louise, you've been spoiled rotten! Who gave you the right to speak like that? If it weren't for Xavier, we wouldn't even be standing here today!"Will's expression mirrored Peter's fury. "Louise, you'd better apologize to Violet and Finn right now!"Fueled by anger, I shoved Violet, who was still kneeling on the ground. "I did nothing wrong. She's the one who should be apologizing!"Jeremy was quick to react. He stepped in, shielding Violet with one hand while pushing me back with the other.I crashed heavily to the ground. Amid the chaos, the urns beside me toppled over.My eyes grew hollow as I stared at the spilled ashes. With shaking hands, I tried to scoop them back up.Jeremy shifted his gaze, clearly uncomfortable. Will's frown deepened as he looked down at the three urns scattered on the floor. "Louise, why have you come here today? And why are there three urns?"Ignoring the pa

The moment I heard the man's voice, the tears came without warning. Between sobs, I managed to ask, "Who are you?"After a long pause, he let out a sigh."You're Louise, aren't you? If you've reached out to me, then… she's passed away, hasn't she? My name is Joshua Joplin—I'm your grandfather's youngest son. By blood, I'm your uncle."The revelation of his identity caught me off guard.Joshua was a legendary name in the business world, rumored to hold sway in both legitimate and underground realms. Even those in politics approached him with caution, wary of his reach and power.Joshua told me he was the product of an unexpected affair between my grandfather and his mother. Essentially, he was an illegitimate son.Having received kindness from my grandmother, he vowed to stand by her and help without hesitation whenever she called on him. After patiently listening to my ordeal, he asked what my next move would be.I gripped the handkerchief in my hand, my voice trembling with ha

When we arrived at the nearest hospital, the ambulance was stopped at the gate."Sorry, we're not accepting patients today," the security guard said. The doctor's expression grew tense. "The patient in the back is pregnant and suffering from severe hemorrhage. If we don't get her inside now, the baby won't survive! What kind of hospital refuses to treat someone in critical condition?"Still, the guard refused to budge."Sorry, but this is Joplin Group's private hospital. Mr. Joplin's child has just been admitted with a medical emergency. He's made it clear that no other patients are to be accepted. There's nothing we can do."My face drained of color, and pain surged through my head. Despite it all, I gritted my teeth and spoke to the guard. "My name is Louise Joplin, the rightful heiress of the Joplin family. Let us through!"The guard shifted uneasily, hesitation written all over his face. "I'm sorry, miss. Unless Mr. Joplin gives his approval, I can't let anyone in. Please d
