Chapter 5

Author: Flowering Tree
I thought I was done with the North District.

Then, at a family council meeting, Angela suddenly proposed keeping me in the North District to help her.

Someone objected at once. "Donna, have you forgotten how many men died in that fight? If Carina hadn't changed the plan on her own, we wouldn't have lost so many!"

"Exactly. You had to go in and clean up her mess yourself. Who would trust her anywhere near the North District again?"

Victor glanced at me instinctively, tension in his eyes.

But I kept my eyes lowered, showing no interest in defending myself.

He paused.

Angela smiled.

"Who said I was letting her handle any of that? The North District warehouse needs a clerk. Send her there."

The table fell silent for a second. Then several captains laughed out loud.

Angela slowly turned to look at me.

"We have to find her something to do. This family shouldn't be feeding someone who does nothing."

Then she turned to Victor. "Don, what do you think?"

She was certain he'd side with her, just as he always had.

But this time, Victor paused before sweeping a cold gaze around the table.

"We'll vote."

I kept my face blank, laughing at him on the inside.

He probably thought letting everyone else decide made him less cruel.

Even though he knew it would only humiliate me further.

Sure enough, hands went up around the table, one after another.

All in favor.

Only Simon Castellano, Victor's brother, kept his hand down.

Everyone paused, then dismissed it.

After all, everyone in the Castellano family knew Simon had spent years enjoying every chance to defy Victor.

After the meeting, one of the captains clapped me on the shoulder.

"Goodbye, warehouse clerk. Guess we won't be seeing you at council anymore."

Angela watched with satisfaction, but Simon's refusal still bothered her.

Once the others had gone, she walked over to him, clearly displeased.

"I know you like defying Victor, but opposing such a simple decision only makes you look childish."

Simon didn't so much as look at her.

"Who said I did it because of him?"

As he spoke, he turned to look at me.

"I just think Carina is good at what she does and deserves real responsibility."

Only then did he turn an expressionless gaze on Angela.

"Sticking her in a warehouse is the stupid decision here."

Angela's eyes reddened. Victor's expression turned icy. "Simon, do you think I won't punish you?"

Simon shrugged. "Go ahead."

He turned to leave.

As he passed, I caught his wrist and smiled up at him.

"Thank you for saving me from complete humiliation in there. Let me buy you a drink tonight."

Simon looked down at my hand, then up at me, and smiled.

"All right."

"Eight o'clock. The usual place. See you there."

There was a click beside us.

Victor had snapped his lighter shut. His knuckles were white around it.

I released Simon's wrist and walked out, with Victor's gaze on me the whole way.

That night, I'd just changed into a dress when someone pushed the door open.

Victor strode in and locked the door behind him. Before I could speak, he clamped a hand around the back of my neck and crushed his mouth against mine.

I kicked with everything I had and shoved at his chest with both hands. He didn't move an inch. He only pinned me more firmly in place.

Pain tore through my chest. I went pale and couldn't hold back a cry. "That hurts..."

Victor went still, then released me at once.

I doubled over, clutching my chest. Blood was soaking through the fresh gauze.

He reached to steady me, then noticed my dress and stopped.

He'd given it to me years ago.

Concern lingered in his eyes, but anger was already overtaking it.

"The usual place?

"How many times have the two of you met behind my back?"

His gaze traveled down my dress. He grabbed a handful of the skirt and pulled me against him.

"You're wearing a dress I gave you to go see him?"

I laughed and smoothed a hand over the skirt. "Why? Am I not allowed?" I asked, drawing out each word.

"Not only am I wearing it, but when the mood is right, he'll take it off me himself."

"Carina!"

Victor caught my wrists and shoved me back against the door.

"I know you still hate me, but you don't have to use Simon to hurt me!

"He's ruthless. He's never valued a woman in his life. If you think he'll treat you well, dream on!"

I snorted at that.

"Then I'll pick somebody else."

His grip tightened, as if he couldn't understand what I'd said.

"What did you say?"

"I said if Simon won't do, I'll find another man."

The words had barely left my mouth when he grabbed my chin and forced my face up.

"You wouldn't dare."

I winced, but he didn't ease his grip. With his other hand, he pulled the key from the lock and hurled it onto the table behind him.

"You're not leaving this room tonight without my permission.

"You can hate me, you can fight me, you can go your whole life without forgiving me..."

He held me in place, his voice hardening. "But finding another man? Don't even think about it."

I was angry enough to laugh.

"By what right?"

Victor leaned in until his nose touched mine and I could feel his breath on my lips.

"Because I'm Victor.

"In this family, nobody takes you away from me unless I say so."

His arm locked around my waist as if he meant to hold me against him forever.

"Carina, even if you're only ever my mistress, you'll still be mine."

Then he yanked the curtain open.

Before I could react, he'd pressed me against the cold glass.

He gripped my jaw and made me look down at Simon, who was waiting by his car below.

"Watch."

He pressed his mouth to my throat.

Then the cold tips of a pair of scissors pressed against his stomach.

"Let go."

Victor froze. He looked down in disbelief.

The room went silent. At last, he slowly let me go, his eyes turning cold.

"Carina, I've spoiled you.

"Anyone else would have died 100 times over by now."

He slammed the door on his way out.

The scissors fell to the floor. I scrubbed at the marks on my neck in disgust, as if his kisses had left me filthy.

The final battle was over the main port in Palermo.Nearly half the Castellano family's shipping passed through it. If Victor lost it, Simon would finally have enough leverage to face him as an equal."I can't give up the main port."Victor pressed his hand flat against the agreement."The moment I sign, every captain loyal to me will go over to Simon. I won't just lose my position as Don. I'll lose my right to sit at this table. He looked up at me."If I lose everything, how am I supposed to compete with him for you?"Victor tore the agreement apart."So this time, I won't give it up."I looked at the scraps of paper on the floor and laughed."I haven't threatened you, and I'm not forcing you."I'm only reminding you that you still have a promise to keep, Don."Victor froze."Now I want you to keep that promise."I watched the pen hover without touching the paper and laughed again.Victor looked up."What are you laughing at?""The fact that I once believed you'd keep it."I pulled th

Three days later, Simon announced a celebration. That night, I entered the ballroom on Simon's arm and immediately spotted Victor in the crowd. He clearly wasn't enjoying himself. The drink in front of him hadn't been touched. Then he saw me, and his casual expression froze.I wore a long gold dress and a gold feathered mask, my chin held high. The gold of my dress caught the light, making me glow. The room fell quiet for a moment. Then someone laughed."Simon, am I seeing this right?"The man stepped closer, a glass in his hand, and openly looked me up and down."I've known you for years, and I've never seen you so protective of a woman. Has someone finally got you wrapped around her finger?"Laughter spread through the room."That's not all. I watched them come in. Simon never let go of her once.""Well, that's a first.""Don't just stand there laughing," someone else called. "Let's see the woman who's got Simon acting like this."The others joined in at once."Take the mask off!""C

The next day, every captain in the Castellano family gathered in the room again. After what had happened, they were all waiting for Victor's answer.Victor sat at the head of the table. His first words were, "As of today, Angela is stripped of her title as Donna."The room erupted. Angela's father jumped to his feet and struck the floor with his cane."Victor! This is your answer to the family? Simon brings in a few worthless pieces of paper, and you strip my daughter of her title?"Victor didn't argue. He simply raised a hand.A second later, Angela's voice rang out clearly from the recording. The maid's statement followed, detailing every time Angela had framed Carina over the years. The room gradually fell silent. The anger froze on Angela's father's face.Only then did Victor look up at him coldly."You wanted an answer. Is that enough?""Enough! More than enough!"Simon stood up and gave two slow claps."The Don's evidence is certainly more thorough this time. Carina was convicted

At another estate.A faint medicinal smell lingered in the air. An IV stand stood beside the bed.Carina lay weakly in bed, her chest still heavy. The door opened, and Simon came in."I didn't think Angela would go that far. Drowning you at sea? A few minutes later, and you really would have died. Our plan nearly got you killed."He held out a medical file."Your old wounds never healed. After this, you'll have permanent damage."Carina didn't take the file. Exhausted, she rubbed the space between her brows."It doesn't matter.""It matters to me."Simon sat beside her, a hint of a smile on his face."Because if Victor finds out you died at my estate, he'll probably kill me on the spot."My people say Victor had Angela locked up as soon as he heard you were dead. Then he fell ill himself. If I'd known you mattered so much to him..."Simon's eyes narrowed."I should have gone after you a long time ago, instead of waiting for you to come to me with a deal."A week earlier, Carina had onl

That night, Victor canceled an important meeting and flew back to Sicily on a private plane. He reached the estate just as the convoy that had taken Carina away returned through the gates.Car doors opened one after another. The men who'd accompanied her looked relaxed, as if they'd just finished a difficult job.Angela heard Victor was back and came out of the main building to meet him. She'd barely opened the door when Victor lunged at her, before she could say a word.He clamped a hand around her throat and slammed her against the wall."Who gave you permission to have Carina killed without my order?"Angela's chin tilted up, her feet nearly leaving the ground. Her face flushed as her struggles weakened.Everyone around them fell silent. His second-in-command's expression changed. He forced himself to step forward."Don, Carina defected and then tried to kill the Donna. Under family law, that's enough to convict her."He paused, glancing at Angela's face. It had turned purple."And

The next morning, Victor wasn't at the table. I was told he'd gone abroad for negotiations. There were several times as many guards watching me as before.Angela looked at the guards around me with satisfaction. "The Don goes to such lengths to protect me."I laughed at her.Her smile froze. "What are you laughing at?""You flatter yourself."I undid the top buttons of my shirt, showing her the marks Victor had left the night before."They're here to keep me from falling for another man. And you thought this was about you.""That's not possible!"Angela stared at the marks, the color draining from her face.I slowly buttoned my shirt and raised my chin in deliberate defiance."Why so surprised?"He's always loved me most. Marrying you was just a way to secure an alliance."Angela exploded."Carina!" she screamed, lunging at me with her hand raised.I dodged, and her hand swept past my ear."You cheap little bitch!"You think you've beaten me because he kissed you a couple of times?
