Author: Your Eyes Between Mine
“I get that Gavin is out of touch with the rules since he’s been away for so long, but what’s your excuse?”

I looked up at Gavin Nolan.

Dressed in a white custom suit, Gavin took the seat at the head of the table and cradled the newborn with a tender smile.

I was supposed to be Sarah’s father. Yet, Tanya Cox put me in a corner, away from my child.

It was my cue to approach Tanya. I walked up behind her and asked, “We are here to celebrate our daughter. Why did you assign me to a seat furthest away from her? What’s the meaning of this?”

“Can you just stop, Callum?”

Tanya spoke in hushed tones, the weariness apparent in her eyes.

“Gavin has just gotten back, and he’s a big deal in capital venture. He is incredibly connected.

“He is Sarah’s godfather anyway. It’s not a bad thing for our daughter if he takes the seat of honor. The board is going to call us out on nepotism if they see you up there.

“Besides, your attire isn’t exactly appropriate for hosting the city’s elites here. Callum, I expected you to have better judgment.”

I chose comfort—a cotton tee and khakis—to better care for Sarah.

However, Tanya viewed my choice of apparel as unpresentable.

Staring at the sheer entitlement in Tanya’s face, I clenched my hands.

“I am Sarah’s father. If I don’t deserve to sit out front, what gives him the right?”

Tanya’s eyes flickered in annoyance. Before she could say anything more, Sarah burst into tears.

Gavin bounced the newborn on his lap with ease, his eyes nearly hiding the aggression.

“I should step aside, Tanya. I’d hate to be the reason you two fight.”

With that, he motioned to get up.

Tanya pressed him down on his seat by the shoulders before snapping an angry look at me.

“Sit back down. You have every right to sit here as Sarah’s godfather.

“Callum, are you really going to start when we are all trying to have a good time? Are you trying to make me look bad?

“If you have nothing better to do, you can check on catering. Don’t get in the way here.”

Several business associates approached, wine glasses in hand.

Among them, Nick Gordon eyed Gavin, then Tanya, before his gaze fell on me.

He asked with a smirk, “Ms. Cox, I don’t recognize this handsome young man. Is he with your firm too?”

Even though my marriage wasn’t known to the public, I ran the operations as VP.

Just last week, I closed a business deal with Nick.

There was no way I was a stranger to him.

Nick simply read the room. With Gavin getting the seat of honor and Tanya putting me down, Nick knew I wasn’t worth respecting.

I turned to Tanya, waiting for her response.

It wouldn’t be so bad if she introduced me as the VP or partner.

Nevertheless, all she did was give me a side glance.

“Oh, he’s Callum Hunter, the firm’s VP. He’s helping out with logistics and errands today since we’re short-staffed.

“You’re dismissed, Mr. Hunter. Can you bring my car around, so it’s ready for the guests when they leave?”

Her voice was indifferent and icy.

A server wheeled in a five-tiered cake.

“It’s time to cut the cake.

“Can we have the father cut the first slice?”

The judge studied the evidence, his brows furrowed. In a panic, Tanya pointed at me and yelled, “Callum, that’s dirty! I can’t believe you spied on me!” “I’m simply gathering evidence. Tanya, what goes around comes around.” I met her gaze with composure. In the end, the court granted the divorce and equal distribution of our assets. As Sarah was an infant, the court ruled in favor of the mother for custody. However, I was granted visitation rights. If Tanya were to display any neglect in caring for Sarah, I would be free to file for emergency custody. Walking out of the courthouse, Tanya narrowed her eyes dangerously at me. “This isn’t over, Callum! I’m going to make you pay!” “The feeling’s mutual.” Turning on my heel, I climbed into a black Maybach. The car window slid shut, shielding me from her malicious gaze. Things were far from over. Cox & Co was a ship with a captain without me behind the helm. The business associates, who came on board for my sake, ba

With the whole office watching, Ellys slammed the divorce papers down on Tanya’s desk. “Ms. Cox, I have been retained by Mr. Hunter to draft this divorce petition for your perusal.” Tanya glanced at the document, her mind going blank. “A d-divorce? Is he honestly asking for a divorce?” “Yes. Mr. Hunter is claiming his right to half the assets. He is looking to seek the child’s custody as well.” Ellys grinned. “Over my dead body!” Tanya ripped the papers with a hysterical shriek. “He’s delusional to think he can take my company and my child! I built the business from the ground up and gave birth to Sarah! He’s getting nothing!” “Ms. Cox, ripping up the papers won’t change the facts. We have evidence of your affair with Mr. Nolan. If you won’t agree to our terms, we will proceed with legal action.” Tanya slumped back onto her seat, her face pale. She thought that I was sulking in a corner, waiting for her to throw me a bone or a shred of attention. Reality finally san

Grabbing the pen, I scribbled my name on the papers. Ellys collected the document and took off. Darren looked at me and sighed. “Callum, what’s the plan for Sarah?” The mention of Sarah shot a pain right through my heart. She was my flesh and blood, the only tie I had left in this world. “I want to fight for custody,” I uttered firmly. “It’s going to be hard.” Darren shook his head. “Sarah is still breastfeeding. In most cases, the court will grant custody to the mother. Tanya is the CEO of a company, so she presents a more compelling financial position than you on paper. “Unless…” “What is it?” “Unless you can prove that she’s an unfit mother.” Darren’s eyes flickered, sharp with calculation.I fell silent. Though Tanya pushed me around like I was trash, she wouldn’t do the same to Sarah. Then again, Sarah was nothing but an accessory to be passed around at the sip-and-see, just to stay in Gavin’s good graces. Tanya handed Sarah over in her so-called atte

Beth threw her arms around me and wailed shakily. I cuddled her tight as if she were the only good thing I had in my life. “I’m sorry, Mom… “I’m sorry for selling the locket you made me… “I’m sorry for being so stubborn and hurting you so much… “I really am, Mom. I’m so, so sorry.” Three years of quiet suffering and restraint broke loose all at once. Beth ran her fingers along my hair, her tears soaking up my shoulder. “Silly child… I can never be angry at you. “The locket was meant to be your safety net. As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters. I don’t care if you had to sell it.“My primary concern is whether you were hurting on your own, hungry, or cold…” Darren stood there, his eyes welling up. Still, he kept a straight face and scoffed. “Come on. We’re going home. Get in. Save the talk until we’re home.” Sitting in the back seat, I couldn’t shake off a dizzy spell. I must be running a fever. Strangely, I didn’t feel sick. It felt like my im

My voice was flat. Tanya handed Sarah off to a guest before giving me a shove. “That’s enough, Callum. Haven’t you caused enough trouble?“I know you’re jealous of Gavin, but can you just stop with the lies?” She pointed at the front door and shouted, “You’re drunk. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear about the divorce. Go home and sleep it off right now. Get out before you humiliate me further.” Tanya believed I was an embarrassment. Just two years ago, things were different when she launched the business with barely anything in our bank accounts. To secure investments, I went behind her back to attend a party hosted by young elites. These people used to worship the ground I walked on. Yet in the private lounge, they looked down their noses at me.Lounging back with his legs crossed, Danny poured a bottle of liquor all over my head. “Oh, if it isn’t Callum. How’s life with the girl? Are you honestly simping over her?The city’s winter was brutal. The alcohol ran down my nec

“Out of the marriage?” With Tanya going stiff, the perceptive crowd fed on the shift of her expression and murmured among themselves. “What’s going on? Is Ms. Cox married to Mr. Hunter? I thought he was just the chauffeur?” “He should check himself. He’s a nobody, hardly in her league. If I were Ms. Cox, I would keep my marriage a secret, too.” Tanya turned ashen. Nevertheless, it didn’t take her long to get her act together. She turned to the whispering crowd and let out an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry about that. Mr. Hunter has been under a lot of stress lately. He clearly had one too many drinks. He’s just joking. “Please, carry on and have a good time.” After assuring the crowd, Tanya cocked her head back, the smile disappearing from her face. She hissed through clenched teeth, “What’s going on with you, Callum? It’s Sarah’s sip-and-see. Must you embarrass me right now? “Do you know how much damage you’re causing?” She grabbed my arm and shoved the ring into
