Chapter 2

Author: Corn 88
Three days later, Adeline Shoeman moved into our apartment. Her reason was that the pipes in her rented apartment had burst, which flooded the floors. That was why she needed to stay over at our place for one week.

Glenn decided to bring her into our apartment without bothering to discuss anything with me.

"It's dangerous for a woman like her to live on her own. She's not used to staying in hotels, either. Besides, the guest bedroom in our apartment is vacant."

As Glenn spoke, he moved the pots of allergy-friendly ferns that I had placed on the guest bedroom's windowsill out of the bedroom. He needed them gone to make room for Adeline's massive suitcases.

I leaned against the doorframe while watching him hard at work.

"Adeline isn't used to staying in hotels, so she decided to crash in my place instead?"

"Don't be mean, Willow. Adeline's my childhood friend as well as the most important muse in my studio. We're all friends here; what's wrong with helping each other out?"

Muse, huh? He sure sounded righteous when he used that term to describe Adeline.

The next day, as soon as I reached home after work, I found myself sneezing instantly.

Clad in one of Glenn's oversized white buttoned shirts, Adeline walked around with bare legs.

A huge crystal vase was displayed in the middle of the dining table. Freshly trimmed flowers filled every inch of the vase.

I could see an array of lisianthus, tulips, and a few champagne roses dusted with pollen in the arrangement.

My throat instantly began to close in on its own.

"Oh! You're home, Willow!" Adeline turned around, a bright smile blooming on her face.

I didn't answer her. Instead, I walked over and dumped the vase's contents into the garbage disposal installed inside the kitchen sink.

"Why did you do that?" Adeline shrieked at the top of her lungs. Her eyes reddened rapidly as well.

The front door happened to swing open at that time. Glenn stepped into the apartment with a bag of groceries in his arms.

"What's the matter?" he asked immediately.

Adeline ducked behind him, looking like a frightened doe. Then, she pointed at the pile of flowers that were clogging up the sink.

"I just wanted to add some color to this home, Glennie. But Willow was quick to destroy all the flowers…"

Glenn's expression darkened instantly. He strode over to turn off the garbage disposal before wheeling around to glare at me.

"Are you done being a nutjob, Willow?"

"I'm allergic to pollen," I replied flatly.

"These are low-allergen flowers! I've specifically dealt with them beforehand! You didn't even touch them, so how the hell did your allergy act up?"

"This is my home! I refuse to let any pollen exist in my space!"

"Addy doesn't know anything about your allergy, Willow. She just wanted to do a good thing for everyone. Must you throw such a huge tantrum over something so trivial?"

The moment I noticed the way Glenn shielded Adeline from me, I found the whole thing absurdly tiring.

"Fine. I shall be gracious, then."

I walked into the bathroom afterward and washed my face with cold water.

Glenn was in charge of dinner. The three of us were seated at the dining table together, which made the atmosphere quite weird.

Glenn sliced a chunk of grilled bass. After taking out every piece of bone carefully, he slid it onto Adeline's plate tenderly.

"You tend to choke on bones whenever you eat fish. Be careful this time, okay?"

"Thank you, Glennie!" Adeline shot Glenn a sweet smile.

Then, she picked up some salad and placed it onto my plate. "Eat up, Willow!"

That particular portion had a lot of diced cilantro. The truth was, I was slightly allergic to cilantro. Whenever I had cilantro, I'd have red rashes breaking out on my body.

Glenn had been dating me for three years, and yet he never remembered that fact.

Ironically, he remembered Adeline choking on fish bones if she ever had fish. He remembered how much she loved chestnut cake, and that she had such delicate skin that she mustn't get pricked by rose thorns.

I just looked down at the cilantro bits on my plate. I didn't bother taking them out, nor did I take a bite out of the salad.

Instead, I just put down my cutlery and drew to my feet.

"I'm done eating. Enjoy your meal, you two."

"What's with the attitude this time?" Glenn hissed out warningly at me in a low tone.

I didn't bother looking back at him. I just walked back to the master bedroom and closed the door behind me.

I didn't pick a fight with Glenn because I knew it was useless. After all, Glenn was forever biased toward Adeline.

So, I turned on my computer. There, I began sorting out my work files so that I could get everything in order when it was time for me to process the handover.

  • Three Years of Loving Her Leftovers   Chapter 10

Once I was done signing the contract, I wrapped the form-fitting wool coat around myself tightly before leaving Sterling Global's headquarters.Winter in Halvon City was bone-chilling, to say the least. Snowflakes began cascading from the sky, soon landing on the icy road.A man stood in the square outside Sterling Global. It was Glenn, wearing a thin, fraying coat.I heard he was saddled with astronomical debts after his studio went bankrupt. He ended up turning to the bottle just to drown out his pain and sorrows for a very long time, which ultimately led to his nervous system being severely damaged.Glenn's hands, which were once his pride and joy, kept trembling violently against his will. He couldn't even hold the lightest pair of pruning shears properly nowadays.Noticing me, Glenn jolted before stumbling into my way."W-Willow… I saw the news. C-Congratulations on… on securing the contract…"I stopped in my tracks to look at Glenn coldly. To me, he was just a stranger w

Something was definitely polluting the air.I dug out the high-filtration medical mask from my pocket and wore it immediately. That was when I spotted the camouflaged ragweed, hidden beneath a few broad-leafed plants. It was a crude yet underhanded tactic. But if I were to start sifting through the floral materials without noticing the ragweed, the pollen that permeated the air would've been enough to kill me on the spot. The judge panel decided to drop me a reminder via their microphone."Ms. Ashbury, you still have 30 minutes remaining in your presentation. You may build your diorama right now. Did you come across any problems?"Adeline, whose chamber was next to mine, kept staring at me through the transparent glass that divided us. A strong hint of anticipation danced in her eyes. She thought I'd panic, and that my allergy would get triggered. But I merely wheeled the entire cart of floral materials out of the display chamber, together with the ragweed. Then, I locked the doo

Two years later, global tech giant Sterling Global officially unveiled its new Armadean headquarters in Halvon City of Chevoria. As an industry leader, Sterling Global announced an open bidding process for the interior landscaping of its ground-floor lobby. The project was themed "Allergen-Free Ecological Atrium" and had a budget of 50 million dollars. It demanded not only exceptional design but also the highest standards of allergen safety. As the lead designer of one of Seldoria's top ecological design teams, I led my team back to Chevoria to compete for the contract. The bidding presentations were held in the panoramic conference center located on the top floor of Sterling Global's headquarters.Strict rules were in place. Every team had its own enclosed display chamber. Each designer had 30 minutes to create a miniature landscape using only their preapproved floral materials. Then, they'd have to present their ecological design concept to a panel of international judges, who'

Six months later, Zurlen welcomed the early summer with open arms. It was a bright and beautiful day here.I was in my research lab when I received an international package from Chevoria. It was a premium, temperature-controlled airfreight container, with shipping costs that could reach four figures per trip. Labels reading "expedited" and "extremely fragile" were plastered on the exterior. The courier carefully keyed in the passcode before opening the container. The icy vapor from the liquid nitrogen slowly dissipated, revealing a white rose lying in the container with its stem intact. Its petals were a shade of pure, untainted white. In fact, they harbored a jade-like quality that made them almost transparent. There were no signs of pollen anywhere. Even the thorns along the stem had been completely eliminated through an extraordinarily complex combination of physical and genetic engineering techniques.A letter was trapped in a slit between the layers of the container. A few

Life was smooth sailing for me throughout my half-year stay in Seldoria. The institute was equipped with the most advanced equipment in the world. I didn't have to deal with any exhausting socialization at all. If anything, I got to immerse myself in a world of academics and design. The research topic I led, which focused on the cultivation of allergen-friendly alpine plants, made rapid progress. I combined the genetic data of the alpine mosses and the pollenless ferns, which allowed me to cultivate a new type of interior-based decorative plants that had high survivability and were 100% allergen-friendly.In this institute, I no longer played a supporting role in someone else's life. Meanwhile, Glenn, who was all the way back in Chevoria, was starting to suffer in life. Without my expertise in color coordination and design, his floral arrangements began to reveal just how hollow and garish they truly were.In the past, Glenn was used to piling the expensive imported flowers

After enduring a flight of more than a dozen hours, I finally arrived at the studio apartment the institute had arranged for me. There, I took a hot bath before changing into a set of cotton-based loungewear. Using the new phone number that the institute had given me, I logged into my spare work email account so that I could receive the project documents that my mentor would be sending to me.As soon as I logged in, an email from Chevonia popped up on the screen. The sender was Glenn. There wasn't any small talk in the title. All I saw was a strongly worded command—"Pick up the phone".I stared at the title for a few moments before deleting it right away. Then, I continued sorting out my luggage.Five minutes later, my phone rang. It was a call initiated on WhatsApp by the one and only Adeline Shoeman.I answered and put the phone to my ear. But I didn't say anything at all."What's with the tantrum this time, Willow?" Glenn's voice drifted from the speaker. His hoarse voic
