Chapter 3

Aвтор: Vitamin
I spoke with hope in my voice, but when I saw who it was, my expression quickly turned cold.

Justin stood over me, looking down as if from a throne. "Who did you think it would be?"

I was done with his endless games. Exhausted, I waved him off. "Just let me go. I'll stay out of your and Clara's lives for good."

When I had first come back to life, my heart burned with hatred—I wanted nothing more than to drag Justin down with me.

However, three years had passed, and I had built a life of my own. Now, all I wanted was distance from him, from all of it.

Justin wouldn't relent. He gripped my wrist tightly, his eyes filled with a complicated emotion I couldn't read.

"Maxine, do you even have a heart? Do you have any idea how I've been looking for you for three years?"

I stared at him blankly, numb.

Three years ago, I had been reborn right at the moment of my wedding. Justin, once again, had thrown me into the hands of his enemies to save Clara.

I now knew the truth that those "enemies" weren't real. They were part of a scam, a setup to steal my fortune.

In my previous life, after I'd transferred my assets to those people, they released me almost immediately.

When I returned to the Garner residence, they forced me to consume a pill to get rid of my child.

"The Garner family cannot have a child born in disgrace."

It didn't matter how much I begged or how much I explained. No one listened.

So when I learned the entire thing had been a conspiracy from the start, I stopped fighting.

After boarding the enemy's boat, I threw myself into the deep ocean, and somehow, I was saved by that man.

"Wasn't it you who handed me over to those people? Oh, wait, were they really enemies? Or were they…?"

I stared straight at Justin, my gaze sharp like a blade.

"Enough!"

Justin's eyes flickered, but he quickly masked it with cold indifference. God help me, but I saw hatred in his eyes.

How ironic. Wasn't I the one who was supposed to be filled with hatred?

Taking advantage of Justin's moment of distraction, I shoved him away.

That man hadn't arrived yet, so I needed to get out of here first.

The moment I stepped into the banquet hall, Clara spotted me.

"Maxine, don't you know that there's an important guest coming tonight? How could you make such a scene? If you ruin Justin's deal, can you even afford the consequences?"

Her voice dripped with contempt. There was none of the fake sweetness she put on for Justin.

"So you're done pretending now?"

The way I looked at her, like she was nothing more than a performing monkey, clearly set her off.

Clara stepped closer, lowering her voice to a cold whisper. "So what if you came back? Justin is still mine. If you don't want to keep playing the mistress, then get out of our lives. Of course, I'll give you some money, you must need it, right? After all, the Prestons lost everything."

When I disappeared three years ago, all my assets went straight to Justin, as my fiance.

I wasn't in the mood for petty arguments. I grabbed her wrist, my voice sharp. "What did you mean by what you said earlier? What do you know about my parents' deaths?"

Clara only smiled in silence, her lips curling into a grin that made my skin crawl.

Rage surged through me, followed by a cold chill that seeped from my feet to my chest. It felt like everything I had once believed, my entire past, was nothing but a lie.

"Justin! I'm scared! Maxine's trying to hurt me!"

Clara's eyes brimmed with tears as she glanced behind me, slipping right back into her usual act.

I turned my head, and there was Justin, storming toward us.

"Maxine! Still unrepentant, I see. Looks like I went too easy on you last time. You still don't know your place."

Justin's hand hit my face, the slap landing with full force.

My ears rang, and the world spun violently around me.

"Take her to the basement of the Garner residence and lock her up!" Justin barked at his assistant, Alvin Potter, his tone as cold as steel.

I fought against their grip with everything I had.

Just as Alvin started dragging me out of the banquet hall, a deep, magnetic voice echoed across the room, "Who dares lay a hand on my wife?"

I felt no pity.Because in that video, it was Clara, just 15 years old.Her eyes weren't innocent. They were filled with venom. The footage clearly showed Clara shoving Justin's parents—tied up and helpless—off the 10th floor of an abandoned factory."Why? Why was it you?"Justin had lost his mind. He even broke free from the officers holding him and grabbed Clara by the collar, shaking her as he screamed. The moment Clara saw the video, she knew she was finished, and yet, she laughed."Why? Justin, do you even need to ask? Of course, it was because those two old bastards wouldn't let me love you."Her laugh was twisted and unhinged."Justin, you took me out of that orphanage. You were supposed to love me, only me."Anyone who stood in the way of her and Justin being together, Clara eliminated them.Even after I disappeared, Clara couldn't understand why he still didn't love her. When Justin's parents discovered Clara's obsession, they made plans to send her out of the coun

Ever since being thrown out of that banquet, Justin had been choking on his own rage. When Alvin finally uncovered my current identity, Justin fell silent."Honestly, Maxine is unbelievable. If she managed to escape back then, why didn't she come back sooner?" Clara said at just the right moment, her tone laced with blame."Enough."Justin didn't echo her this time. His voice came out cold and cutting, shutting her up immediately. He regretted everything. Back then, he never should've listened to Clara.Having people pose as enemies was to make me trade away my fortune for my safety. It had been the perfect way to get every last cent of the Preston family. However, he hadn't expected me to jump into the ocean. He'd searched for me for three years, and now that he'd finally found me, I was married to someone else.Justin locked himself inside the villa's storage room, clutching the wedding photo we'd taken three years ago.In the picture, I was smiling softly, leaning against h

Samson's lips curved upward slightly, the icy aura he'd carried moments ago melting into something warm and bright. The security guards strode over, then turned to Justin and Clara with a cold, curt command. "You two. Out."Everyone in the room gasped, eyes widening in shock. No one had expected Terence to take the side of two people long cast out of Regentia's elite circle over Justin, the city's newest golden boy.Who the hell were they? The room was full of sharks, and it didn't take long for every gaze to shift—calculating, wary, and full of questions. However, in the middle of the storm, Justin and Clara were the only ones who couldn't accept reality.Justin's face was as dark as thunder. "Mr. Kinsman, what is the meaning of this?"Terence didn't even blink. "Mr. Barlow and Ms. Preston are my distinguished guests. Anyone who disrespects them is disrespecting me."His eyes swept over the crowd, his voice like steel. "Anyone who disrespects me stands against the Regentia Bu

In that moment, my eyes stung, and all my strength crumbled into raw hurt.A tall figure strode quickly out of the shadows by the doorway. I instinctively looked up. A broad-shouldered man in a perfectly tailored suit came into view. His frame was commanding under the warm glow of the lights."Sorry, I'm late, honey."Samson Barlow's deep voice rumbled as his strong arms wrapped around me, shielding me from the world. His gaze swept across the room—cold, sharp, and merciless—as though he were staring at a room full of corpses."Maxine, really? Bringing some random guy here to make a scene? You're being ridiculous."Clara's voice oozed fake concern, though her eyes glimmered with barely contained delight at the unfolding spectacle."You'd better send him away. If Justin gets angry, you won't be able to handle the consequences.""Who are you to talk to my wife? Justin, it's been years, and wow, your taste has gone downhill," Samson said. The casual contempt in his tone cut dee

"This… The doctor said my pregnancy was unstable, so Justin gave me this bracelet to keep me safe. If you don't like it, Maxine, I'll give it back to you," Clara said softly, fingers already moving to take off the bracelet."Enough!" Justin barked, immediately stopping her, his voice full of distress."It's just a bracelet, Maxine.
