“Let go of her, right now!”
That was Noelle’s voice, and it was what brought me back to reality. Everyone present at the club was now looking at us, and Mark’s hand still held onto my wrist possessively…and painfully.
“Let her go, Mark,” Noelle ordered again when it seemed as though Mark was deaf to her orders.
“Stay out of this,” Mark eventually said, glaring at Noelle. His voice was throaty and husky, and I wondered if it was as a result of what happened between the two of us; if he felt it too, or if it was as a result of his anger.
“Why should I?” Noelle asked, facing Mark fearlessly and boldly.
She had never liked him, and knowing Noelle the way I did, I knew that she would definitely use this opportunity to get at Mark for what he made me go through. She hardly ever saw him, because she could not stand his presence.
“Last time I checked, she was your ex-wife, Mark,” Noelle added.
Mark smirked. “You are mistaken, Noelle,” he simply said, leaving Noelle’s eyes to budge out in shock and confusion, and she turned to me quickly.
“Alexa?” Noelle called out, demanding some sort of answers from me immediately, and I knew that I just had to step in.
I could not continue to just keep quiet and not say a word. Clearly, Mark intended to rile Noelle up, and also, he intended to ruin the fun that we were here to have, and I was not going to allow that to happen.
I snatched my arm away from Mark’s grip and looked at him with bitterness and anger, which wasn’t even hard to do because all he did to me were still fresh and hurtful.
“I divorced you, Mark,” I told Mark, loud enough for Noelle and everyone to hear.
I began to hear some murmurs from the people watching us, but I would not back down. This was a new me, and I intended to let Mark and everyone know this. Looking at Mark now, I could see how cruel, possessive, and selfish he was. This was his ploy to take control, but for the very first time, I would let him know that he had failed woefully.
“I haven’t signed the divorce papers,” Mark said.
He still had that disgusting smirk on his face, and his tone was nothing short of condescending and aggravating, which was just the typical Mark Ronaldo.
“And you will,” I said without flinching or stuttering.
I guessed my tone and the confidence in the sound of my voice took Mark by surprise, because I did catch a flicker of astonishment before it was gone.
“So this is what you intend to do with your life? Get away from me and whore around the city like a loose dog?” Mark asked insultingly.
Rarely had he finished the question before my palm connected with his cheek in a loud smack and everyone gushed in shock. Even Mark was too stunned to respond at first, and I glared at him, waiting and daring him to return the favor.
“You should have just let her be, Mark,” Noelle chipped in. “Now see how embarrassed you have ended up,” Noelle added.
She quickly moved me away from Mark’s presence and stood in my place, so when Mark gazed his eyes upon me again, it was Noelle that he was looking at.
“Alexa is no longer your wife and she is pleased to do whatever she likes with her life. The Dancing Devil is a place for anyone who can afford it, and if you dare try to attack, harass, confront, or even speak to her again, I will have the securities throw you out and demand that the management keep you out of this place for a really long time,” Noelle added threateningly.
With that, without even waiting for Mark to say a word in his defense, she turned to me and led me to our booked chamber, and the ten men who had been hired by Noelle climbed the mini-stage in our chamber and began to entertain us as though nothing had happened.
“You would really do that?” I asked Noelle, because to me, that threat seemed somewhat extreme, and knowing how stubborn and daring Mark was, he might actually take her up on that threat, and if she failed to deliver, it would blow up in our faces.
“I don’t know, and I guess I wouldn’t even need to,” Noelle answered, feeling very proud and accomplished.
“Why?” I asked, almost confused.
“Because your ex-husband has returned to his table with his friends, whom I am certain are going to make jest of him,” Noelle said.
Noelle hardly knew the kind of man Mark Ronaldo was; no matter how badly you came at him, his friends would never have the balls to make jest of the situation or make him feel terrible. I had seen how they were around him a couple of times, and they literally worshipped the ground he walked on, but I decided not to deflate Noelle’s confidence with that piece of information.
“He still hasn’t signed the papers, which means that we are still married, and he is upset because it was his money I spent for all these,” I told Noelle.
“Come on, Alexa, can you stop talking about that asshole for a minute and just focus on what is in front of you?” Noelle asked, referring to the ten men who were gliding and whining sensually. “Look, if you are going to make Mark feel like a piece of shit tonight, you will have to actually ogle these men and do something wild. I bet his eyes are still glued to you,” Noelle added.
I made the mistake of turning to check just to confirm, and true to Noelle’s words, Mark was looking at us, as our eyes connected from our tables apart.
I swallowed and looked away. Then I said to Noelle, “You know what, you are right.”
“Yes, girl, work it!” Noelle said loudly like a drunken woman, urging me on.
With that, I grabbed some money from my purse, climbed up the stage and allowed some of the men to flirt with me while they danced and I sprayed them without a single fuck in the world.
ALEXAShivers ran down my spine at the realization that someone had been watching me. I began to tremble with fear.I knew that it had to be my apartment because as soon as I came out, the person zoomed off.I might have been able to see who it was if it hadn’t been a tinted car, and it wasn’t a familiar car either.I thought of hurrying back into my apartment and shutting the door, but I was too shaken to even do that. What if the person returned? For the life of me, I couldn’t think of anyone who would want to hurt or harm me.I hurried into my car and drove out of my garage, heading for Mark’s house.I was going there anyway.I thought of calling Donald, because he was the one I just finished speaking to, but a bigger part of me knew that he wasn’t the one I wanted around me right now.Mark Ronaldo was the only person I could think of, which was ironic, considering what had happened between us in the last couple of days, or maybe it was because I was already going to his house to d
ALEXAThe moment I stepped into my apartment, my phone rang, and when I saw that it was Donald Shell, my shoulders sagged.I really didn’t want to speak to him right now.The only thing I wanted to do was to lie down and have a good rest, but then again, it dawned on me quickly that Donald and Noelle were very close, which meant that he could know a thing or two about her affair, unless she was equally being secretive with him.“Hi, Donald,” I said tiredly when I picked up his call.“You sound really tired,” Donald said when he heard my voice.I was truly tired, but sounding that tired was an obvious act.“I am exhausted. It has been a very hectic and busy day,” I told him.Donald Shell wouldn’t have been calling just for the sake of it, and I didn’t want him to make any offers, because I didn’t want to have to decline. He had been very nice to me lately, and I didn’t want to hurt him.Fortunately for me, the last time at his house hadn’t been totally awful even though I had felt disc
MARK“Pick up, Mark,” Vector encouraged me as I stared at the call.It was what I had been waiting for all day, and now that I was seeing it, I was too worried to even pick up. It was relieving that she was calling; it meant that she was alive, but what if it hadn’t gone well? What if she was calling to break some bad news to me?“Come on, Mark,” Vector urged.I sucked in my breath and tried to remind myself that I was a Ronaldo who shouldn’t be living under fear and worrying, and then I picked up.“Mr. Mark,” she said as soon as the call connected. The sound of her voice was a relief to me.“Mona, are you okay?” I asked her.“Yes, I am, and I just got into my apartment,” she responded.Again, I sighed with relief.Brent was right when he said that she would be so guarded that no harm would come to her even if Mr. Devon wanted to hurt her.“That’s fantastic,” I said. “How did it go?” I asked the most important question.“He believed me, Mr. Mark,” Mona responded, much to my relief.“A
MARKVector tried twice that day to get me to see the owner of Dancing Devils, but I refused. As much as I wanted to, I didn’t want to get more on Alexa’s nerves.Besides, Alexa still had her father, Mr. Silver. I, on the other hand, was all alone.Vector was here, and Brent’s paid services were also available, but I didn’t have another family that I could lean on, and my company was crumbling to the ground, which was the most important thing to me right now.Eventually, Vector gave up.“I guess I will just tell him that you are not interested in seeing him,” Vector said sourly. If he was trying to guilt-trip me into changing my mind, he was wrong. Right now, the only thing that mattered to me was finding out everything I needed to, and also ensuring that Mona was unharmed in all this.“Yes, do,” I stated firmly.“It’s just that Donald Shell is on the rampage of taking people’s hard work away from them, and no one seems to be able to stop him,” Vector said. “Worse, Alexa is going to
ALEXAThe meeting with Matty Farm went smoothly, and being that it was our first day officially, the startup was really good, and it already held promises of a good outcome. However, I still couldn’t stop thinking about the lie. After the meeting and exchanging of papers to work on, I introduced Matty Farm briefly to the staff members, and then made an agreement with him to involve them on our second day, which would be by the following week.“It was a great meeting, Matty Farm,” I told him when we were done.I was almost feeling embarrassed about my earlier accusation, especially seeing that Matty Farm was nothing but an honest man. There was just something about his integrity that reminded me of my dad. The only time I almost doubted him was when I ran into his at Donald Shell’s house, but he already gave an explanation for that.“Thank you, Alexa,” he said as we exchanged a formal handshake.“And about earlier, I didn’t mean to come at you like that,” I apologized.“There is nothin
MARK“Are you nervous?” Vector asked me.“No, I am not,” I told him.“But you didn’t go to your company today, and that can raise the same suspicion that we are trying to avoid,” Vector said.“I already called Mr. Devon and told him that I was feeling a little under the weather, and that I wouldn’t be coming in today,” I said. “That should cover up for something, right?” I asked him.I already told Brent that there was no way I could go to that company, see Mr. Devon’s face, and act all normal.I just couldn’t.If I tried to, I would end up ruining everything.Brent understood, and he had actually said the message would help to dissolve whatever suspicion that my abrupt and unannounced absence might have caused.Mona already agreed to do what was required of her, and I couldn’t help how worried and agitated I was about it. I was even more concerned about her safety right now than keeping Mr. Devon in the dark. All my life, I had been made to believe that I was a strong man who couldn
