Chapter 6

Author: Shawney
Celia staggered out of the banquet hall, her cheek still burning. The blood at the corner of her mouth had already dried.

She did not call the driver. She got behind the wheel herself and drove to the hospital.

While the doctor treated her wounds, she stared at herself in the mirror. One side of her face was red and swollen, the skin at her lip was split, and her eyes were laced with broken blood vessels.

She looked wrecked.

She tried to smile, but the movement pulled at the wound, and the pain made her suck in a sharp breath.

Once the doctor was done, she headed back to her car. In the parking garage, two people were waiting for her. They were Lana's parents, Gerald Crawford and Patrice Engel.

They flanked her car door, their voices pleading. "Ms. Vaughn, please, stop holding on to the title of Mrs. Keller. If not for yourself, then have some pity on us and let our Lana take your place..."

Celia looked at them coldly. "Move."

"Lana truly loves Mr. Keller. Just let them be together..."

"I said move."

She had no interest in dragging this out. She pushed past them and pulled the car door open.

The moment her foot hit the gas, Gerald threw himself at the front of the car. The dull thud came before Celia could even process what had happened. She looked up and saw him on the ground, clutching his leg and howling in pain.

Patrice screamed and threw herself down beside him. "Honey!"

Celia sat frozen, her fingers locked around the steering wheel.

He walked to the front of the car himself. It was deliberate.

There was no time to think it through. She got out of the car and got him to the emergency room.

In the hospital corridor, Lana came running. The moment she saw Celia, she did not say a word. She just swung her hand and slapped her across the face.

Celia's head snapped to the side, her ears ringing.

"Celia Vaughn!" Lana was sobbing, every inch the picture of heartbreak. "Do whatever you want to me, but why would you go after my parents?"

The bandage on Celia's cheek split open, and fresh blood seeped through, but she could not feel any of it.

"Your father threw himself at the car," she said flatly.

"If you're going to lie, at least make it convincing!" Roman's voice cut in from behind her, sharp and cold. "Why would Lana's father deliberately run into your car? Celia, when did you become this cruel?"

Celia looked at him. Whatever was left of her heart had already gone numb.

He would not even investigate. He had already decided she did it on purpose. He seemed to have forgotten entirely what it had been like when he loved her.

A doctor hurried out. "The patient has lost a significant amount of blood and needs a transfusion urgently. He's type A. Can anyone here donate?"

Lana shook her head through her tears. "I'm immediate family. I can't donate..."

Roman's gaze landed on Celia, cold and deliberate. "She's type A. She'll do it."

Celia's head snapped up. "I'm not donating."

"You hit him. You take responsibility." His eyes were dark. "If anything happens to the man in there, I won't let it go."

Celia felt the cold settle through her entire body, and her voice shook. "Are you going to do what you did last time? Threaten me with my parents' lives? Threaten me with mine?"

Something flickered in his eyes, as though the words had struck a nerve, but it lasted less than a second. He hardened again and gave the order to his bodyguards, "Hold her down. Draw the blood."

Celia was forced into the donation chair. When the needle pierced her vein, her fingertips trembled from the pain.

The blood bag filled slowly, and her awareness faded with it.

She remembered how it used to be. She was anemic, and Roman used to panic over the smallest scrape. A paper cut was enough to send him into a fit of worry.

Now, he was holding her down and draining her blood to save a man who had thrown himself at her car.

Her vision darkened in waves until she finally lost consciousness.

Outside the door, Lana stood alone. A gust of cold wind swept past her, as if mocking how far she had fallen. She walked without direction. When she passed a fountain, she glanced down at her reflection in the water and nearly jumped out of her skin. A scream tore out of her before she could stop it. She clapped both hands over her face. The woman staring back at her from the surface was horrifying, and she could not believe it was herself.During her time in detention, there had been no time or energy for anything resembling self-care. Every day, before the old wounds could heal, new ones were added on top of them. Without proper treatment, they had festered and rotted. She had always been the kind of woman who cared about her appearance more than almost anything. She could not comprehend how she had ended up here.It was not just her own suffering. Her parents were in constant pain as well. While she was locked up, someone had shown her how Gerald and Patrice were doing. They w

"I wouldn't... I'd never do that. I just wanted her to apologize to you. If you want me to pay for what I did, I'll go. I'll do it."Roman scrambled to explain himself. He wanted to move closer to Celia but was held back by the fear in her eyes. He did not dare take a single step.Dominic's brows furrowed together. He rested a hand on Celia's back and said to her softly, "Don't worry. I won't give him another chance to hurt you."When he turned to Roman, his expression went cold."Roman, do you even believe what you're saying? If you really wanted to make amends, would you need Celia's permission to go do it? Or is the truth that you're too afraid?"Before Roman could argue, Dominic continued, "Whether you're willing or not doesn't matter. I'll send you there myself."The moment the words left his mouth, several bodyguards stepped forward. They bound Roman and hauled him toward a waiting car.Roman did not resist. His eyes stayed on Celia the entire time."Celia, the only reaso

The photos looped through his mind like a nightmare that would not end. Even with his eyes shut, the images kept playing behind his eyelids. After what felt like an eternity, the guilt crushed him flat. He began to apologize, over and over, to no one."I'm sorry, Celia..."No matter how many times he said it, the torment did not stop.Cold sweat soaked through his clothes. He fumbled blindly around the room, desperate for a way out.He found a bathroom eventually. The moment he stepped inside, all he could feel was how filthy he was.He turned the hot water up as high as it would go and scrubbed at his skin over and over, long past the point of reason. It was as though he were trying to strip off a layer of himself entirely."Celia, I'm not dirty. I'll never touch anyone but you again. I'm not dirty..."The words fell out of him in a vacant murmur. The ordeal ended at some point, though he could not say when. When Roman had finally exhausted himself, his eyes were hollow and

"I'm sorry, Celia. I really do love you. Everything that happened with Lana, I can explain all of it. I was deceived. She manipulated me. I've already made her pay. Please, don't be this cruel."Give me one more chance. I swear I'll never hurt you again. If I do, I'll walk away with nothing. No, forget that. I'll transfer everything I own into your name right now."Roman begged, his voice stripped of all pride. He picked up a shard of broken porcelain from the floor and pressed it against his own throat. Then he seized one of Celia's hands and forced it around his, making her the one holding the blade to his skin.A wild, desperate smile twisted across his face, bitter underneath it all. "Celia, if you hate me that much, then kill me. Anything is better than hearing you say no. I can't face a future without you."Take everything I have. I don't care. Just don't take yourself away from me. Punish me however you want. Lock me in the freezer. Throw me in a cell. Hit me, curse me, I'll

After hearing all of this, Celia sat still for a long time before a buried memory finally surfaced. Dominic had been there, in the background of her past, more than once. She had simply never thought of him as anything other than one of Roman's friends. Now, listening to everything Dominic had just said, she felt genuinely moved. At the same time, a quiet panic stirred inside her. She wondered if she really deserved love this sincere. She was not there yet. She did not love him that deeply. Her relationship with Roman had drained every last reserve of emotional energy she had, and it had left her second-guessing everything. She was terrified of giving all of herself again, only to be torn apart by someone new.She could not afford another six years.Dominic sensed the fragility in her. He reached over and took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers without a word. The warmth of his skin traveled into hers, and something in her chest thawed along with it.His voice was gentle.

Martin and Ruth were furious the moment they laid eyes on Roman. Neither of them bothered to hide it."Mr. Keller, you and our family are not the same kind of people. Go back to your privileged little world, where you can have as many women as you want and throw them away when you're bored. Our Celia is not your toy, and she is not your punching bag.""Our daughter was perfectly fine before she married you. Do you have any idea how much she suffered? How many times she was hurt? You had her thrown in a cell. You let her be abused over and over again. What did she ever do to deserve a man like you?"The more they spoke, the angrier they became. Tears streamed down their faces as they hit him, one blow after another.Roman stood with his head bowed and took every strike without resistance. The guilt was written all over him.Still, he could not stop himself from asking, "What about Dominic? He's the same kind of man I am. Same world, same money. Aren't you worried he'll turn out the
