24. Bully
Eleven days had gone since Edward Bartlett's admission to the hospital. He was now able to move places with the help of a wheelchair. The cervical collar and IV injection had been removed from him as well as the pulse oximeter and ECG machine. And with his regular sessions to physiotherapy, his recovery was swiftly progressing.
"Good morning, uncle Edward!" little Sophia's beaming smile greeted him as soon as he opened his eyes.

"Did you sleep well?"

"Hi. Long time no see," said the seemingly attractive woman as she approached Edward bartlett. She was black but her skin was rich caramel; a result from having both white and black parents, and petite--about 5 feet tall. With long kept curly hair that dropped to her waist. "First girlfriend!" exclaimed Zia Scott. Gray Stewart's brows flicked up. "Really? I thought you were his first girlfriend." "No." Zia shook her body aggressively with an uneasy expression. "Remember high school? Senior year? He suddenly came up to us on the first day and introduced Felicity as his girlfriend?" "Nah." Gray put her feet up the coffee table in front. "Doesn't ring a bell." He looked over her shoulder and watched the cartoon playing on the flat screen. Zia stared at her apathetic expression. "I think you were dating that blonde girl, Annie, that time." She noticed Gray's face slightly twitching. "Yeah, that pretentious bitch. I can't believe she cheated on me."

With Gray gone, Zia Scott raided through the kitchen and started cooking dinner with the very few ingredients she could scavenge on the deserted fridge. With the help of a stool, she struggled to level with the countertop to prepare the necessary ingredients. As she knelt on the stool, she reached for a knife and cutting board and started cutting vegetables. And while she did so, her divided attention convinced her mind to whirr back to memories that were bugging her head all day. This was back when she was still a high school student. Summer break had just ended and they had just started their life as a senior student on their way to graduation. Zia Scott heard beeping on the door and then approaching footsteps while she was watching an evening drama on the flat screen. Gray passed by the living room and straight to the bathroom. Zia rose and headed to the kitchen. "Did you lose your watch?" she said loudly. Gray went out of the bathroom. "No, why?" Zia shot her an angry look. "You said you'd be back in an hour or two. It's been three hours." Gray hiked her eyebrows. "And?" "And now the food's cold." Zia started to sulk. "What, you cooked?" "Why? Did you eat already?" Zia's voice rose.

Edward Bartlett neatly folded his blanket, sitting on his hospital bed. Then he placed it on top of the pillow beside him. As he was about to reach for his crutches, the door opened. "How's my excellent patient?" said Doctor Hiller as she came in. "Congratulations, you're finally discharged from the hospital. You really held out well these past two week." "Thank you for everything, Doctor. You've been a great help to me," he said. "Did your physio say anything?" "Yeah. She said my legs are almost healed. I just need to use these--" he gestured toward his crutches, "for a week then come back for a follow up." Doctor Hiller broke into a smile. "That's good to know." The door o

“Welcome back, Edward!” said Airol Baldwin as soon as Edward entered the teacher’s lounge. “Thank you, Mr. Baldwin,” he responded. “It’s been three weeks, huh?” said Airol, then he studied his body. “Wow, you look good as new.” Indeed, he appeared to be doing great now that he was able to get rid of the crutches after another week of homestay and visitation at the hospital. A little later, a few more teachers arrived with Belinda Cogzell among them. “Edward!” she said as she almost jumped on him and wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. “Are you okay now?” Edward gently removed her arms. “Yes, Ms. Cogzell. Thank you for your sentiment.”

Gray Stewart’s attention shifted to the voice coming from behind her. It was a familiar voice. She could look over her shoulder but she didn’t want to. A head peered from beside her. It was Sarah Lewis. “So, it’s really you,” she said. “I doubted myself for a second since you didn’t look back when I called.” Meanwhile, Zia was preoccupied with her zealousness for shopping. In the few minutes since she entered the boutique, she was already able to find 6 clothes that she wanted to try on. Struggling to gather the clothes with her short arms, she walked toward the entrance where Gray was standing and saw her talking to a saleslady. The saleslady’s back was facing her. She approached them. “Gray, could you hold this?” she said as she attempted to pass the clothes to Gray.
